Screened electrostatic interactions between clay platelets

An effective pair potential for systems of uniformly charged lamellar colloids in the presence of an electrolytic solution of microscopic co- and counterions is derived. The charge distribution on the discs is expressed as a collection of multipole moments, and the tensors which determine the interactions between these multipoles are derived from a screened Coulomb potential. Unlike previous studies of such systems, the interaction energy may now be expressed for discs at arbitrary mutual orientation. The potential is shown to be exactly equivalent to the use of linearized Poisson-Boltzmann theory.Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, created with Revtex. To appear in Molecular Physic

Valuing Options in California Water Markets: A Laboratory Investigation

    Get PDF
Risk and reliability dominate water supply discussions in the arid western United States. In the past, water managers built additional storage to mitigate supply risk. The optimal, least expensive storage sites have now been taken, and there are strong, environmental objections to new facilities. Reliability of existing supplies is further diminished due to concerns about endangered species and global climate change. Thus water agencies increasingly turn to contractual mechanisms such as dry-year options to manage supply risk in advance of need. However, although a few water agencies across the West have implemented dry-year options, sufficient data for conventional econometric analysis do not yet exist. We thus utilize experimental economics to analyze the effect of annual dry-year options on water markets. How do market structure (competitive versus market power) and option contract availability affect water price and allocation within a market? Experiment participants trade stochastic realizations of water in a non-uniform double auction parameterized to resemble the California water market. We find that realized gains from trade are on average higher when options can be traded, by 11% in competitive markets and by 21% in dominant buyer markets. Findings in this analysis may assist policymakers in preparing for the next multi-year drought in California.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

Structure and dielectric properties of polar fluids with extended dipoles: results from numerical simulations

The strengths and short-comings of the point-dipole model for polar fluids of spherical molecules are illustrated by considering the physically more relevant case of extended dipoles formed by two opposite charges ±q\pm q separated by a distance dd (dipole moment μ=qd\mu=q d). Extensive Molecular Dynamics simulations on a high density dipolar fluid are used to analyse the dependence of the pair structure, dielectric constant \eps and dynamics as a function of the ratio d/σd/\sigma (\sig is the molecular diameter), for a fixed dipole moment μ\mu. The point dipole model is found to agree well with the extended dipole model up to d/\sig \simeq 0.3. Beyond that ratio, \eps shows a non-trivial variation with d/\sig. When d/\sig>0.6, a transition is observed towards a hexagonal columnar phase; the corresponding value of the dipole moment, \mu^2/\sig^3 k T=3, is found to be substantially lower than the value of the point dipole required to drive a similar transition.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures; Paper submitted to Molecular Physic

Attraction between like-charged colloidal particles induced by a surface a density - functional analysis

We show that the first non-linear correction to the linearised Poisson-Boltzman n (or DLVO) theory of effective pair interactions between charge-stabilised, co lloidal particles near a charged wall leads to an attractive component of entro pic origin. The position and depth of the potential compare favourably with rec ent experimental measurementsComment: 12 pages including 2 figures. submitted to physical review letter

Lattice model for cold and warm swelling of polymers in water

We define a lattice model for the interaction of a polymer with water. We solve the model in a suitable approximation. In the case of a non-polar homopolymer, for reasonable values of the parameters, the polymer is found in a non-compact conformation at low temperature; as the temperature grows, there is a sharp transition towards a compact state, then, at higher temperatures, the polymer swells again. This behaviour closely reminds that of proteins, that are unfolded at both low and high temperatures.Comment: REVTeX, 5 pages, 2 EPS figure

Feasibility study of an Integrated Program for Aerospace vehicle Design (IPAD). Volume 1A: Summary

    Get PDF
IPAD was defined as a total system oriented to the product design process. This total system was designed to recognize the product design process, individuals and their design process tasks, and the computer-based IPAD System to aid product design. Principal elements of the IPAD System include the host computer and its interactive system software, new executive and data management software, and an open-ended IPAD library of technical programs to match the intended product design process. The basic goal of the IPAD total system is to increase the productivity of the product design organization. Increases in individual productivity were feasible through automation and computer support of routine information handling. Such proven automation can directly decrease cost and flowtime in the product design process
