    Meteorites provide a wealth of information about the solar system's formation, since they have similar building blocks as the Earth's crust but have been virtually unaltered since their formation. Some stony meteorites contain minerals and silicate inclusions, called chondrules, in the matrix. Utilizing Moessbauer spectroscopy, we identified minerals in the Murchison meteorite, a carbonaceous chondritic meteorite, by the gamma ray resonance lines observed. Absorption patterns of the spectra were found due to the minerals olivine and phyllosilicate. We used a scanning electron microscope to describe the structure of the chondrules in the Murchison meteorite. The chondrules were found to be deformed due to weathering of the meteorite. Diameters varied in size from 0.2 to 0.5 mm. Further enhancement of the microscopic imagery using a digital image processor was used to describe the physical characteristics of the inclusions

    We isolated lap3-1 and lap3-2 mutants in ascreen for pollen that displays abnormal stigma binding.Unlike wild-type pollen, lap3-1 and lap3-2 pollen exine isthinner, weaker, and is missing some connections betweentheir roof-like tectum structures. We describe the mappingand identification of LAP3 as a novel gene that contains arepetitive motif found in b-propeller enzymes. Insertionmutations in LAP3 lead to male sterility. To investigatepossible roles for LAP3 in pollen development, we assayedthe metabolite profile of anther tissues containing developingpollen grains and found that the lap3-2 defect leadsto a broad range of metabolic changes. The largest changeswere seen in levels of a straight-chain hydrocarbon nonacosaneand in naringenin chalcone, an obligate compoundin the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway

    There were significant differences in the hardness of the varieties of the dent corns fed in these experiments. Hardness of the corn was determined by a machine designed to find out the crushing resistance of the kernels. In the second and third trials, when three tests were made to determine actual crushing resistance, the means ranged from 24.16 pounds on the Special Reid Yellow Dent or soft corn to 41.46 pounds on the Krug. Average for these two trials showed that it required 27.8 pounds to crush the soft type, 30.3 pounds for the medium, Reid Yellow Dent, and 37.1 pounds to crush the hard type, Krug. The hard type corn was 25 percent harder than the soft type corn and 18 percent harder than the medium

    Diffusion Quantum Monte Carlo Calculations of Excited States of Silicon

    The band structure of silicon is calculated at the Gamma, X, and L wave vectors using diffusion quantum Monte Carlo methods. Excited states are formed by promoting an electron from the valence band into the conduction band. We obtain good agreement with experiment for states around the gap region and demonstrate that the method works equally well for direct and indirect excitations, and that one can calculate many excited states at each wave vector. This work establishes the fixed-node DMC approach as an accurate method for calculating the energies of low lying excitations in solids.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur

    The Einstein static universe with torsion and the sign problem of the cosmological constant

    In the field equations of Einstein-Cartan theory with cosmological constant a static spherically symmetric perfect fluid with spin density satisfying the Weyssenhoff restriction is considered. This serves as a rough model of space filled with (fermionic) dark matter. From this the Einstein static universe with constant torsion is constructed, generalising the Einstein Cosmos to Einstein-Cartan theory. The interplay between torsion and the cosmological constant is discussed.
