Impact of Tributyltin and Triphenyltin on Ivory Shell (Babylonia japonica) Populations
We histopathologically examined gonads and chemically determined organotin compounds in tissues of the ivory shell, Babylonia japonica. Imposex (a superimposition of male-type genital organs on females) occurred in approximately 80–90% of B. japonica specimens that we examined, with the penis and vas deferens both well developed. No oviduct blockage by vas deferens formation was observed. Ovarian spermatogenesis and suppressed ovarian maturation were observed in the females that exhibited imposex, although no histopathological abnormalities were found in males. Tissue distributions of organotin compounds [tributyltin (TBT), triphenyltin (TPhT), and their metabolites] were different for butyltins and phenyltins; a remarkably high accumulation of TBT was observed in the ctenidium, osphradium, and heart, whereas high concentrations of TPhT were detected in the ovary and digestive gland. More than one-third of TBT accumulated in the digestive glands of both males and females, followed by the testis, ctenidium, muscle, and heart tissues in males and in the muscle, ovary, ctenidium, and head tissues (including the central nervous system ganglia) in females. In both males and females, more than half of total TPhT accumulated in the digestive glands, followed by the gonads. The next highest values were in the muscle, ctenidium, and heart tissues in males and in the muscle, oviduct, and head tissues in females. Both TBT and TPhT concentrations in the gonads were positively correlated with penis length in females. Our findings strongly suggest that reproductive failure in adult females accompanied by imposex, possibly induced by TBT and TPhT from antifouling paints, may have caused the marked decline of B. japonica populations in Japan
Small Bowel Obstruction Due to Mochi (Rice Cake): A Case Report and Review of the Literature
A 66-year-old man presented at our emergency department with severe intermittent abdominal pain. His history revealed that he had eaten several mochi (rice cakes) without sufficiently chewing them before swallowing. Following computed tomography that showed a high value, he was diagnosed with an obstruction caused by mochi. Although mochi obstruction can sometimes improve with conservative treatment, this case required laparotomy. Medical literature in English on small bowel obstruction due to mochi is rare, but fortunately in this case we were able to collect complete laboratory and imaging data. Furthermore, due to the surgical findings, we could clearly diagnose the pathophysiology of mochi obstruction. Here we describe a case of small bowel obstruction due to mochi, and review the literature to determine the characteristics of intestinal obstruction caused by it
Cadmium-coordinated supramolecule suppresses tumor growth of T-cell leukemia in mice
Cadmium is a toxic pollutant with occupational and environmental significance, due to its diverse toxic effects. Supramolecules that conjugate and decontaminate toxic metals have potential for use in treatment of cadmium intoxication. In addition, metal-coordinating ability has been postulated to contribute to the cytotoxic effects of anti-tumor agents such as cisplatin or bleomycin. Thiacalixarenes, cyclic oligomers of p-alkylphenol bridged by sulfur atoms, are supramolecules known to have potent coordinating ability to metal ions. In this study, we show that cadmium-coordinated thiacalix[4]arene tetrasulfate (TC4ATS-Cd) exhibits an anti-proliferative effect against T-cell leukemia cells. Cadmium exhibited cytotoxicity with IC50 values ranging from 36 to 129M against epithelia-derived cancer cell lines, while TC4ATS-Cd elicited no significant cytotoxicity (IC50>947M). However, a number of T-cell leukemia cell lines exhibited marked sensitivity to TC4ATS-Cd. In Jurkat cells, toxicity of TC4ATS-Cd occurred with an IC50 of 6.9M, which is comparable to that of 6.5M observed for cadmium alone. TC4ATS-Cd induced apoptotic cell death through activation of caspase-3 in Jurkat cells. In a xenograft model, TC4ATS-Cd (13mg/kg) treatment significantly suppressed the tumor growth of Jurkat cells in mice. In addition, TC4ATS-Cd-treated mice exhibited significantly less cadmium accumulation in liver and kidney compared to equimolar cadmium-treated mice. These results suggest that cadmium-coordinated supramolecules may have therapeutic potential for treatment of T-cell leukemia
Astrometric VLBI observations of HO masers in an extreme OH/IR star candidate NSV17351
Results of astrometric very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations
towards an extreme OH/IR star candidate NSV17351 are presented. We used the
VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry) VLBI array to observe 22\,GHz
HO masers of NSV17351. We derived an annual parallax of 0.2470.035 mas
which corresponds to a distance of 4.050.59 kpc. By averaging the proper
motions of 15 maser spots, we obtained the systemic proper motion of NSV17351
to be () (1.19
0.11, 1.30 0.19) mas\,yr. The maser spots spread out over a
region of 20 mas 30 mas, which can be converted to a spatial
distribution of 80 au 120 au at the source distance.
Internal motions of the maser spots suggest an outward moving maser region with
respect to the estimated position of the central star. From single dish
monitoring of the HO maser emission, we estimate the pulsation period of
NSV17351 to be 112224 days. This is the first report of the periodic
activity of NSV17351, indicating that NSV17351 could have a mass of
4\,M. We confirmed that the time variation of HO masers can
be used as a period estimator of variable OH/IR stars. Furthermore, by
inspecting dozens of double-peaked HO maser spectra from the last 40 years,
we detected a long-term acceleration in the radial velocity of the
circumstellar matter to be km\,s\,yr Finally, we
determined the position and kinematics of NSV17351 in the Milky Way Galaxy and
found that NSV17351 is located in an interarm region between the Outer and
Perseus arms. We note that astrometric VLBI observations towards extreme OH/IR
stars are useful samples for studies of the Galactic dynamics.Comment: Published in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japa
The Impact of Tofogliflozin on Physiological and Hormonal Function, Serum Electrolytes, and Cardiac Diastolic Function in Elderly Japanese Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
The sodium glucose transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor tofogliflozin is a glucose-lowering drug that causes the excretion of surplus glucose by inhibiting SGLT2. Because of tofogliflozin’s osmotic diuresis mechanism, patients’ serum electrolytes, body fluid levels, and cardiac function must be monitored. We retrospectively analyzed the cases of 64 elderly Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) who received tofogliflozin for 3 months. Their HbA1c, serum electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride), hematocrit, brain natriuretic peptide (cardiac volume load marker) and renin and aldosterone (RAA; an index of regulatory hormones involved in body fluid retention) were continuously monitored during the investigation period. Renal function and cardiac function (by echocardiography) were assessed throughout the period. HbA1c significantly decreased (β1=−0.341, p<0.0001, linear regression analysis [LRA]). Most of the hormonal, electrolyte, and physiological parameters were maintained throughout the study period. In these circumstances, E/e’ tended to decrease (β1=−0.382, p=0.13, LRA). Compared to the baseline, E/e’ was significantly decreased at 1 and 3 months (p<0.01, p<0.05). In the higher E/e’ group (E/e’≥10, n=34), E/e’ decreased significantly (β1=−0.63, p<0.05, LRA). ΔE/e’ was correlated with body-weight change during treatment (r=0.64, p<0.01). The 3-month tofogliflozin treatment improved glycemic control and diastolic function represented by E/e’ in T2DM patients, without affecting serum electrolytes, renal function, or RAA. No negative impacts on the patients were observed. Three-month tofogliflozin treatment lowered glucose and improved cardiac diastolic function
