The Haasis Family Papers consist of family history data, correspondence, literary manuscripts, drawings, photographs, newspaper clippings, financial and legal papers, memorabilia, and other papers of the Haasis family of Perth Amboy, New Jersey, and Aiken, South Carolina. Includes club and organizational files for the American Association of University Women, American Rose Society, Smokey Mountains History Club, the Connecticut College Alumni Association, Aiken Naturalists Club, Edisto Beach Yacht Club, the Savannah River Valley Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the Rutgers Alumni Association. The Power of Persuasion: Becoming a Merchant in the 18th Century

Lucas Haasis found a time capsule: A complete mercantile letter archive of the merchant Nicolaus Gottlieb Luetkens who lived in 18th century Hamburg. Luetkens travelled France between 1743-1745 in order to become a successful wholesale merchant. He succeeded in this undertaking via both shrewd business practice and proficient skills in the practice of letter writing. Based on this unique discovery, in this microhistorical study Lucas Haasis examines the crucial steps and activities of a mercantile establishment phase, the typical letter practices of Early Modern merchants, and the practical principles of persuasion leading to success in the 18th century

Mathis - Hindemith - Kepler

Wenn auch in den vergangenen Jahren Hindemiths Mathis der Maler an internationaler Bühnenpräsenz gewonnen hat, so kann nichts darüber hinwegtäuschen, dass dieser Oper und ihrem „Schwesterwerk“ der Kepler-Oper Die Harmonie der Welt nur wenig Aufmerksamkeit von Seiten musikwissenschaftlicher Forschung zu Teil geworden ist. Gründe sind derer mehrere und durchaus sogar solche die klar auszumachen sind: Es ist nicht nur so, dass die betreffenden Bände der Gesamtausgabe der Werke Hindemiths beide noch nicht erschienen sind (es sind ledliglich die beiden Opernsinfonien bisher editiert worden) und so kritische Edition und Material nur eingeschränkt zur Verfügung stehen, sondern über jedem Werk ein Diktum ähnlich eines Damokleschwertes hängt. Mathis der Maler ist und bleibt die Oper des Komponisten, die teilweise während der Zeit der NS-Herrschaft in Deutschland entstanden ist und deshalb sich gewissen Interpretationen nicht entziehen kann und für die Kepler-Oper gelten die Urteile Theodor W. Adornos und das diesem eigentlich entgegenstehende Ludwig Finschers als fast verbindlich. Zugegeben sind diese Meinungen nicht falsch, sie verlangen aber einer dringenden Differenzierung und Perspektivenerweiterung. Diese Arbeit stellt den Versuch einer Durchleuchtung dieser Opern von einer unkonventionellen Perspektive aus dar. Ausgangspunkt der Überlegungen ist die von mir als Phantasie bezeichnete Denkfigur, die sich um die „musica mundana“ als Phänomen musikalischer Poetik und Theorie wie ein roter Faden durch die Musikgeschichte zieht. Für Paul Hindemith, wie auch für Gustav Mahler, den ich hier dem ersteren annähern zu versuche, ist diese unentbehrlich und von größter Wichtigkeit. Ausgehend von dieser Idee, wie sie vor allem von Boethius und Kepler vertreten wird, wird die Umsetzung im Rahmen der genannten Opern und darüber hinaus vom Standpunkt der „Metaphoetik“-Theorie von Hermann Danuser zu befragen sein. Am Ende dieser Arbeit stehen dann gewissermaßen abschließende, wie zugleich auch weitere Diskurse eröffnende Überlegungen zu einer philosophischen Antrophologie der Musik in Anschluss an die Konzepte des Philosophen Hans Blumenberg

Assembly-oriented design in automotive engineering

To be competitive on the global market, carmakers have cut lead times in passenger car development to the bone. At the same time both the product complexity and the customer\u27s demands with regard to quality are continuously rising. Various new strategies and tools are currently being explored to cope with these challenges: simultaneous/concurrent engineering, front-loaded development, and knowledge-/feature-based parametric design to name just a few. Current design processes in automotive engineering as well as the engineering IT systems deployed to support them are largely single part oriented. Assembly design is seen as a process step following sequentially after part design, and assembly information is not managed in the same quality and quantity as part information. Assembly-oriented design (AOD) is an approach which breaks with these traditional paradigms of part orientation. Focusing on a parallelisation of assembly design and part design as well as on an integrated and consistent information management for assembly information right from the beginning, AOD strives to realise significant benefits throughout the product life-cycle. The objective of this paper is to elaborate on this approach with a focus on the special situation in automotive engineering

Applying Universal Linking of Engineering Objects in the Automotive Industry:Practical Aspects, Benefits, and Prototypes

The bi-directional communication of CAD programs with subsequent applications such as process planning remains a key challenge in design-for-the-lifecycle. While it seems sensible that individual applications use their own collection of feature types and thereby allow users to have their specific perspective of the product, it is still difficult to automatically close the gap between the variety of applications. Universal Linking of Engineering Objects (ULEO) targets this concern. It is general enough to facilitate informational integration of the applications along the process chain. This paper examines a number of scenarios for exploiting ULEO’s benefits in the field of automotive development and reports on the associated prototypical software implementations. Principle alternatives and technical aspects relevant for applying ULEO are discussed in some detail beforehand

Challenges for CAx and EDM in an international automotive company

In design and manufacturing of passenger cars, changes in processes and tools pose new challenges for the management of engineering data. In this paper, the status quo, challenges, and developments are elaborated using the example of a globally operating automobile manufacturer. Special attention is given to the complexity and variance of the products, to paradigm shifts in design philosophies, to trends targeting the IT environment, and to user bias. Finally, conclusions are drawn for future CAx and EDM1 concepts and strategies
