Magnetisation reversal mechanism in Co-Cr media for perpendicular magnetic recording
In this study Co---Cr thin films with perpendicular anisotropy are investigated. Three films with values for Hc of 11, 90 and 170 kA/m have been selected for this paper. Besides the coercivily several other parameters such as the Hc/Hk, Cr-segregation, domain structure, column sizes, etc. were studied by VSM, SEM, NMR, MFM, AFM and selective etching. The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) has been used to record the hysteresis curves of submicron Hall crosses. This very sensitive technique in combination with e-beam lithography and ion-beam etching resulted in the recording of AHE hysteresis loops with dimensions of the Hall crosses as small as 0.3 × 0.3 ¿m2. The AHE loops of three samples, with less than 60 columns, show different micromagnetic properties. Only the sample with Hc1 = 90 kA/m shows clear steps in the curves above the noise level. The largest steps correspond with the reversal of one column and the total number of steps was five times the number of columns for this sample. The different reversal mechanisms observed by the AHE are related to the differences in structure, coercivity and domain size
Examining client perceptions of partnership quality and its dimensions in an IT outsourcing relationship
This paper reports on an empirical study of the multidimensionality of partnership quality in IT outsourcing arrangements and the relationships between these dimensions of partnership quality. A two-phase national survey was conducted to collect empirical data to confirm the dimensions of partnership quality in an IT outsourcing arrangement from the client organisation perspective and to identify the significant relationships between these dimensions using a second generation multivariate analysis technique—partial least squares
(PLS). The findings from results of the data analyses show that inter-organisational trust, shared business understanding and to a lesser extent, functional and dysfunctional conflict between the client organisation and the outsourcing vendor in an IT outsourcing relationship
are the key determinants of partnership quality. The key outcome variable for high partnership quality between the client organisation and the outsourcing vendor in an IT
outsourcing relationship is mutual beneficial sharing of risks and benefits. Commitment in an IT outsourcing relationship is confirmed as a multidimensional construct of behaviour commitment and temporal/continuance commitment and was found to be influenced by the other dimensions of partnership quality. The key findings of this study provide support for the notion that trust and shared business understanding are key drivers in the IT outsourcing
partnership style relationship ensuring that the sharing of risks and benefits are realised and conflict is minimised leading to a high quality and ultimately successful partnership between the client organisation and the outsourcing vendor. Furthermore our findings indicate that
behavioural commitment to the contractual obligations of an IT outsourcing relationship sustains an ongoing temporal commitment to the partnership between the client organisation and the outsourcing vendor
Real-Time Water Vapor Maps from a GPS Surface Network: Construction, Validation, and Applications
In this paper the construction of real-time integrated water vapor (IWV) maps from a surface network of global positioning system (GPS) receivers is presented. The IWV maps are constructed using a twodimensional variational technique with a persistence background that is 15 min old. The background error covariances are determined using a novel two-step method, which is based on the Hollingsworth¿Lonnberg method. The quality of these maps is assessed by comparison with radiosonde observations and IWV maps from a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model. The analyzed GPS IWV maps have no bias against radiosonde observations and a small bias against NWP analysis and forecasts up to 9 h. The standard deviation with radiosonde observations is around 2 kg m-2, and the standard deviation with NWP increases with increasing forecast length (from 2 kg m-2 for the NWP analysis to 4 kg m-2 for a forecast length of 48 h). To illustrate the additional value of these real-time products for nowcasting, three thunderstorm cases are discussed. The constructed GPS IWV maps are combined with data from the weather radar, a lightning detection network, and surface wind observations. All cases show that the location of developing thunderstorms can be identified 2 h prior to initiation in the convergence of moist air

Pension fund finance and sponsoring companies: Empirical evidence on theoretical hypotheses
This study presents empirical evidence on the influence of sponsoring companies on the
funding and portfolio allocation of pension funds, an issue on which most extant literature is theoretical. We use a unique microdataset of 550 Dutch defined benefit company pension funds and 100 sponsoring firms over 1996-2005 to test the relevance of the main theoretical hypotheses, the first paper to do so in a comprehensive manner. We find that pension funds
have lower cover ratios when (1) their sponsoring company is highly leveraged, (2) the fund’s return on assets is relatively low, and (3) the sponsoring firm is small. Further, defined benefit pension funds are found to invest more in shares when their sponsoring companies are highly leveraged. These links in general suggest higher risk in the sponsor leads to correspondingly higher risk in the fund, and warrant close attention by regulators
Asset Price Shocks, Real Expenditures, and Financial Structure: A Multi-Country Analysis
This paper examines the responses of private consumption, residential investment, and business investment in 11 EU countries, Japan, and the United States to shocks in housing and equity prices. The effects are assessed with a Structural Vector Auto Regressive (SVAR) model, and four key findings emerge. First, the impacts of asset price shocks are heterogeneous across countries. Second, these heterogeneous responses are systematically related to cross-country variation in financial structure. We are thus able to document the importance of a wealth/balance sheet channel for private consumption and residential investment and an equity finance channel for business investment. Third, for a given country, housing shocks have a much greater impact than equity shocks. Fourth, variance decompositions indicate that monetary policy reacts to equity price shocks but not to housing price shocks. These results highlight the important role played by asset prices on real activity and fuel the debate about the inclusion of asset prices in the formulation of monetary policy.monetary policy, asset prices, structural VAR

The asymptotic regimes of tilted Bianchi II cosmologies
In this paper we give, for the first time, a complete description of the
dynamics of tilted spatially homogeneous cosmologies of Bianchi type II. The
source is assumed to be a perfect fluid with equation of state , where is a constant. We show that unless the perfect fluid is
stiff, the tilt destabilizes the Kasner solutions, leading to a Mixmaster-like
initial singularity, with the tilt being dynamically significant. At late times
the tilt becomes dynamically negligible unless the equation of state parameter
satisfies . We also find that the tilt does not destabilize
the flat FL model, with the result that the presence of tilt increases the
likelihood of intermediate isotropization
In-plane Theory of Non-Sequential Triple Ionization
We describe first-principles in-plane calculations of non-sequential triple
ionization (NSTI) of atoms in a linearly polarized intense laser pulse. In a
fully classically correlated description, all three electrons respond
dynamically to the nuclear attraction, the pairwise e-e repulsions and the
laser force throughout the duration of a 780nm laser pulse. Nonsequential
ejection is shown to occur in a multi-electron, possibly multi-cycle and
multi-dimensional, rescattering sequence that is coordinated by a number of
sharp transverse recollimation impacts.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Domain wall theory and exchange stiffness in Co/Pd multilayers
The stripe model of domain structure in multilayers is studied by micromagnetic simulation. The results indicate a strong reduction of the effective domain wall energy (by dipolar effects). Domain width measurements on sputtered Co/Pd multilayers are compared with the theory. The estimated exchange stiffness is comparable with that of bulk Co. The effects of interface roughness and of interlayer exchange are discussed
