    The association between Metabolic Syndrome and serum levels of lipid peroxidation and interleukin-6 in Gorgan

    Background: There are limited studies on the relationship between inflammatory marker such as IL-6 and lipid peroxidation and metabolic syndrome. Objective: The aim of present study was to assess IL-6 and lipid peroxidation in subjects with and without the metabolic syndrome and their association with metabolic syndrome components. Methods: Age and gender matched 40 subjects with metabolic syndrome and 40 control groups took part in this study. Results: The mean malondialdehyde level was significantly higher in overweight and obese subjects with metabolic syndrome than control groups (P. <. 0.05). The mean level of IL-6 in men and the mean level of malondialdehyde in women with metabolic syndrome was significantly higher than control groups (p <. 0.05). There were significant positive correlation between malondialdehyde and fasting blood glucose, triglyceride and systolic blood pressure (p <. 0.05). Conclusions: Our results suggest that higher levels of IL-6 and malondialdehyde may cause insulin resistance and metabolic disorders in all subjects with metabolic syndrome. Malondialdehyde level shows strong association with some metabolic syndrome components. This means the greater risk of metabolic syndrome. © 2015

    Spatial learning and memory in the tortoise (Geochelone carbonaria)

    A single tortoise (Geochelone carbonaria) was trained in an eight-arm radial maze, with the apparatus and general procedures modeled on those used to demonstrate spatial learning in rats. The tortoise learned to perform reliably above chance, preferentially choosing baited arms, rather than returning to arms previously visited on a trial. Test sessions that examined control by olfactory cues revealed that they did not affect performance. No systematic, stereotyped response patterns were evident. In spite of differences in brain structure, the tortoise showed spatial learning abilities comparable to those observed in mammals

    Coupled Ocean Atmosphere Processes and European Climate (COAPEC): improved understanding of the coupled climate system

    COAPEC (http://coapec.nerc.ac.uk/) is a five-year Directed Science Programme funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). COAPEC is providing advances in understanding the mechanisms by which the ocean and atmosphere interact, how these processes are represented in state-of-the-art numerical climate models and how they determine the predictability of the climate system over seasonal-decadal timescales. Processes studied include the generation and propagation of salinity and heat anomalies in the North Atlantic, the influence of the thermohaline circulation and the role of storm tracks on European Climate. The influence of remote processes, including ocean-atmosphere coupling in tropical Atlantic warm events and Southern Ocean circulation are also being investigated. As part of the programme, new coupled models are being developed, including: a coupled hybrid isopycnic coordinate model; fast models for multi-ensemble runs to investigate model parameters space, using both high performance machines and spare home PC resources; a QG model to investigate high resolution ocean processes in coupled systems and validated ice models for coupled modelling. Underpinning research into improving the observational datasets, such as the SOC flux climatology, and into the influence of sea-ice observations in General Circulation Models is also being carried out as part of the programme. To place these advances into a socially relevant context, COAPEC is also investigating the methods for using, and economic benefits of, climate forecasts at seasonal timescales for the UK health sector and the UK energy industry

    Comparative efficacy of deferiprone, deferoxamine and combination of deferiprone and deferoxamine on serum ferritin value in Beta-Thalassemia patients

    Background: Iron overload is a predictable and life-threatening complication in patients with thalassemia. Effective and convenient iron chelation remains one of the main targets of clinical management of thalassemia major. The development of a safe and effective chelator has been the goal for many years. Aims and Objective: It was aimed to compare the effect of deferiprone, deferoxamine and combination of deferiprone and deferoxamine on serum ferritin value in beta-thalassemia patients. Material and Methods: This controlled clinical trial was conducted on 46 major beta-thalassemic patients. Fifteen patients in deferiprone group received deferiprone 75mg/kg/day three times a day orally. Nineteen patients in deferoxamine group received deferoxamine 30-50 mg/kg/day subcutaneously for 8-12 hours/day and 5 days per week. Twelve patients in combined therapy group received deferiprone 75 mg/kg/day three times a day orally with deferoxamine 30–50 mg/kg subcutaneously every other day. Serum ferritin value was measured at the beginning and at the end of 6th and 12th months of study. Results: The mean of serum ferritin value in deferiprone group insignificantly increased from 2731± 1398.5 μg/L at the beginning to 2788.5 ± 978.6 μg/L and to 3331.8 ± 1833.9 μg/L at the end of 6th and 12th months of study, respectively. The mean of serum ferritin value in deferoxamine group insignificantly increased from 2883.5 ± 1598.1 μg/L at the beginning to 2935.3 ± 1258.2 μg/L at the end of 6th month of study and decreased to 2773.8 ± 1216.1 μg/L and 12th month of study. The mean of serum ferritin level in combined therapy group significantly decreased from 7498.7 ± 3512.9 μg/L at the beginning to 4839.9 ± 2698.2 μg/L (P < 0.001) and to 4298.2 ± 2288.7 μg/L (P < 0.001) at the end of 6th and 12th months of study, respectively. Conclusion: Combined therapy significantly decreases serum ferritin level. Study suggests deferiprone as a significant addition to support therapy in patients with betathalassemia major on regular transfusion regimens. © 2015 Journal of Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences University

    The impact of disease adaptation information on general population values for rheumatoid arthritis states

    Economic evaluation of healthcare technologies uses values for hypothetical health states elicited from the general population rather than patients. However, they may not consider adaptation. This study explored the extent to which the general population changes their initial values, and the factors that influenced this change, after being informed about adaptation. Three rheumatoid arthritis (RA) states were used for illustration. Two respondent groups were interviewed. The Initially Uninformed Group initially valued the RA states. An adaptation exercise followed, where they listened to recordings of patients discussing how they adapted; they then valued the same states again. The Informed Group underwent the adaptation exercise before valuing the states. The difference between the valuations was examined using t-tests. A multivariate regression was developed to assess the factors that impacted individuals to change their initial values. After undergoing the adaptation exercise, the Initially Uninformed Group statistically increased their values for the RA states. When the second values of the Initially Uninformed Group were compared to the first values of the Informed Group, there were no statistical differences, implying that there was no interviewer effect. Younger and healthier individuals were more likely to increase their initial values after being informed about adaptation

    Alleviation of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis in C57BL/6 mice by Soy Daidzein

    Experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) is considered as the murine model of multiple sclerosis. Daidzein a phytostrogenic compound of soy is known to impose immunomodulatory and antioxidative effects. We conducted this study to assess the potential protective and therapeutic effects of daidzein on allergic encephalomyelitis. C57BL/6 mice were induced with allergic encephalomyelitis using myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (35-55) and received daidzein or dimethyl sulfoxide as the vehicle control. To assess the protective effect of daidzein, the mice were administered with 20 mg/kg of daidzein from 21 days prior to 21 days post EAE induction on a daily basis. To evaluate the therapeutic effect of daidzein, mice were fed with 300 mg/kg daidzein after the appearance of the first clinical signs for 10 days. One day after the last gavage, the mice were sacrificed. Spleen and brain were removed for further histological and immunological analysis. Feeding mice with low dose of daidzein prior to disease induction did not affect disease severity. However, treating with high dose of daidzein after the onset of the disease reduced interferon-3 and interleukin-12 secretion, enhanced interleukin-10 production, suppressed lymphocyte proliferation, and decreased cytotoxicity as judged by lactate dehydrogenase release. In conclusion, daidzein reduced the extent of demyelination and disease severity. Chronic oral therapy with low dose of daidzein did not prevent experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.     All-optical versus electro-optical quantum-limited feedback

    All-optical feedback can be effected by putting the output of a source cavity through a Faraday isolator and into a second cavity which is coupled to the source cavity by a nonlinear crystal. If the driven cavity is heavily damped, then it can be adiabatically eliminated and a master equation or quantum Langevin equation derived for the first cavity alone. This is done for an input bath in an arbitrary state, and for an arbitrary nonlinear coupling. If the intercavity coupling involves only the intensity (or one quadrature) of the driven cavity, then the effect on the source cavity is identical to that which can be obtained from electro-optical feedback using direct (or homodyne) detection. If the coupling involves both quadratures, this equivalence no longer holds, and a coupling linear in the source amplitude can produce a nonclassical state in the source cavity. The analogous electro-optic scheme using heterodyne detection introduces extra noise which prevents the production of nonclassical light. Unlike the electro-optic case, the all-optical feedback loop has an output beam (reflected from the second cavity). We show that this may be squeezed, even if the source cavity remains in a classical state.Comment: 21 pages.     Effects of intermittent fasting on experimental autoimune encephalomyelitis in C57BL/6 mice

    Several religions recommend periods of fasting. One of the most frequently asked questions of MS patients before the holy month of Ramadan is weather fasting might have an unfavorable effect on their disease course. This debate became more challenging after the publication of experimental studies suggesting that calorie restriction prior to disease induction attenuates disease severity. We conducted this study to assess early and late effects of fasting on the animal model of MS, known as autoimmune encephalomyelitis. EAE was induced in the C57BL/6 mice, using Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycopeptide (MOG) 35-55 and they fasted every other day either after the appearance of the first clinical sign or 30 days after disease induction for ten days. Thereafter, the mice were sacrificed for further histological and immunological evaluations. Intermittent fasting after the establishment of EAE did not have any unfavorable effect on the course of disease. Moreover, fasting at the early phase of disease alleviated EAE severity by ameliorating spinal cord demyelination. Fasting suppressed the secretion of IFN-γ, TNF-α and raised IL-10 production in splenocytes. Fasting was also associated with a lower percent of cytotoxicity. Intermittent fasting not only had no unfavorable effect on EAE but also reduced EAE severity if started at early phase of disease. © Summer 2016, Iran J Allergy Asthma Immunol. All rights reserved

    Near-optimal two-mode spin squeezing via feedback

    We propose a feedback scheme for the production of two-mode spin squeezing. We determine a general expression for the optimal feedback, which is also applicable to the case of single-mode spin squeezing. The two-mode spin squeezed states obtained via this feedback are optimal for j=1/2 and are very close to optimal for j>1/2. In addition, the master equation suggests a Hamiltonian that would produce two-mode spin squeezing without feedback, and is analogous to the two-axis countertwisting Hamiltonian in the single mode case.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, journal versio
