Electron Spin Injection at a Schottky Contact
We investigate theoretically electrical spin injection at a Schottky contact
between a spin-polarized electrode and a non-magnetic semiconductor. Current
and electron density spin-polarizations are discussed as functions of barrier
energy and semiconductor doping density. The effect of a spin-dependent
interface resistance that results from a tunneling region at the
contact/semiconductor interface is described. The model can serve as a guide
for designing spin-injection experiments with regard to the interface

Quantum Efficiency of Charge Qubit Measurements Using a Single Electron Transistor
The quantum efficiency, which characterizes the quality of information gain
against information loss, is an important figure of merit for any realistic
quantum detectors in the gradual process of collapsing the state being
measured. In this work we consider the problem of solid-state charge qubit
measurements with a single-electron-transistor (SET). We analyze two models:
one corresponds to a strong response SET, and the other is a tunable one in
response strength. We find that the response strength would essentially bound
the quantum efficiency, making the detector non-quantum-limited. Quantum
limited measurements, however, can be achieved in the limits of strong response
and asymmetric tunneling. The present study is also associated with appropriate
justifications for the measurement and backaction-dephasing rates, which were
usually evaluated in controversial methods.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure
The Proton Spin and the Wigner Rotation
It is shown that in both the gluonic and strange sea explanations of the
Ellis-Jaffe sum rule violation discovered by the European Muon Collaboration
(EMC), the spin of the proton, when viewed in in its rest reference frame,
could by fully provided by quarks and antiquarks within a simple quark model
picture, taken into account the relativistic effect from the Wigner rotation.Comment: 13 latex page
Effect of dried tangerine peel extract supplementation on the growth performance and antioxidant status of broiler chicks
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of dried tangerine peel extract (DTPE) supplementation on the growth performance and immune and antioxidant status of broiler chicks. A total of 525day-old, male, Arbour Acres (AA) broiler chicks were fed a basal diet (CTR) either with or without 80, 160, 240 and 480mg DTPE/kg diet. The chicks were randomly assigned into five dietary groups for a 42-day experiment. There were seven replicates per group and 15 chicks per replicate. At 42 days of age, two birds from each cage were selected for blood sampling. The dietary DTPE supplementation linearly increased the body weight and the average daily gain (p=.03; p=.03) and quadratically increased the average daily feed intake (p=.02) during the starter period. In addition, the plasma lysozyme level in the 80 or 160mg/kg DTPE group increased compared to the CTR group (p=.02 and .07, respectively). Chicks fed 80-mg/kg DTPE reduced the malondialdehyde concentration (p=.02) compared with birds fed the CTR diets. Moreover, the plasma glutathione peroxidase activities in the low DTPE dietary groups (80 and 160mg/kg) were higher than in the CTR (p<.01) and 240mg/kg DTPE group (p<.01 and p=.02, respectively). The results of the present study indicate that dietary DTPE with low supplemental dosage (<= 160mg/kg) might positively modulate the systemic antioxidative defence property of chicks
Influence of Humidity on Microtribology of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotube Film
The aim of this study is to probe the influence of water vapor environment on
the microtribological properties of a forestlike vertically aligned carbon
nanotube (VACNT) film, deposited on a silicon (001) substrate by chemical vapor
deposition. Tribological experiments were performed using a gold tip under
relative humidity varying from 0 to 100%. Very low adhesion forces and high
friction coefficients of 0.6 to 1.3 resulted. The adhesion and friction forces
were independent of humidity, due probably to the high hydrophobicity of VACNT.
These tribological characteristics were compared to those of a diamond like
carbon (DLC) sample
A Measurement of Psi(2S) Resonance Parameters
Cross sections for e+e- to hadons, pi+pi- J/Psi, and mu+mu- have been
measured in the vicinity of the Psi(2S) resonance using the BESII detector
operated at the BEPC. The Psi(2S) total width; partial widths to hadrons,
pi+pi- J/Psi, muons; and corresponding branching fractions have been determined
to be Gamma(total)= (264+-27) keV; Gamma(hadron)= (258+-26) keV, Gamma(mu)=
(2.44+-0.21) keV, and Gamma(pi+pi- J/Psi)= (85+-8.7) keV; and Br(hadron)=
(97.79+-0.15)%, Br(pi+pi- J/Psi)= (32+-1.4)%, Br(mu)= (0.93+-0.08)%,

Healthy lifestyle and life expectancy free of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes: prospective cohort study
OBJECTIVE: To examine how a healthy lifestyle is related to life expectancy that is free from major chronic diseases. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: The Nurses' Health Study (1980-2014; n=73 196) and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study (1986-2014; n=38 366). MAIN EXPOSURES: Five low risk lifestyle factors: never smoking, body mass index 18.5-24.9, moderate to vigorous physical activity (≥30 minutes/day), moderate alcohol intake (women: 5-15 g/day; men 5-30 g/day), and a higher diet quality score (upper 40%). MAIN OUTCOME: Life expectancy free of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. RESULTS: The life expectancy free of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer at age 50 was 23.7 years (95% confidence interval 22.6 to 24.7) for women who adopted no low risk lifestyle factors, in contrast to 34.4 years (33.1 to 35.5) for women who adopted four or five low risk factors. At age 50, the life expectancy free of any of these chronic diseases was 23.5 (22.3 to 24.7) years among men who adopted no low risk lifestyle factors and 31.1 (29.5 to 32.5) years in men who adopted four or five low risk lifestyle factors. For current male smokers who smoked heavily (≥15 cigarettes/day) or obese men and women (body mass index ≥30), their disease-free life expectancies accounted for the lowest proportion (≤75%) of total life expectancy at age 50. CONCLUSION: Adherence to a healthy lifestyle at mid-life is associated with a longer life expectancy free of major chronic diseases
Measurements of J/psi Decays into 2(pi+pi-)eta and 3(pi+pi-)eta
Based on a sample of 5.8X 10^7 J/psi events taken with the BESII detector,
the branching fractions of J/psi--> 2(pi+pi-)eta and J/psi-->3(pi+pi-)eta are
measured for the first time to be (2.26+-0.08+-0.27)X10^{-3} and
(7.24+-0.96+-1.11)X10^{-4}, respectively.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure

BESII Detector Simulation
A Monte Carlo program based on Geant3 has been developed for BESII detector
simulation. The organization of the program is outlined, and the digitization
procedure for simulating the response of various sub-detectors is described.
Comparisons with data show that the performance of the program is generally
