The NF-ÎşB subunit c-Rel regulates Bach2 tumour suppressor expression in B-cell lymphoma
The REL gene, encoding the NF-κB subunit c-Rel, is frequently amplified in B-cell lymphoma and functions as a tumour-promoting transcription factor. Here we report the surprising result that c-rel–/– mice display significantly earlier lymphomagenesis in the c-Myc driven, Eμ-Myc model of B-cell lymphoma. c-Rel loss also led to earlier onset of disease in a separate TCL1-Tg-driven lymphoma model. Tumour reimplantation experiments indicated that this is an effect intrinsic to the Eμ-Myc lymphoma cells but, counterintuitively, c-rel–/– Eμ-Myc lymphoma cells were more sensitive to apoptotic stimuli. To learn more about why loss of c-Rel led to earlier onset of disease, microarray gene expression analysis was performed on B cells from 4-week-old, wild-type and c-rel–/– Eμ-Myc mice. Extensive changes in gene expression were not seen at this age, but among those transcripts significantly downregulated by the loss of c-Rel was the B-cell tumour suppressor BTB and CNC homology 2 (Bach2). Quantitative PCR and western blot analysis confirmed loss of Bach2 in c-Rel mutant Eμ-Myc tumours at both 4 weeks and the terminal stages of disease. Moreover, Bach2 expression was also downregulated in c-rel–/– TCL1-Tg mice and RelA Thr505Ala mutant Eμ-Myc mice. Analysis of wild-type Eμ-Myc mice demonstrated that the population expressing low levels of Bach2 exhibited the earlier onset of lymphoma seen in c-rel–/– mice. Confirming the relevance of these findings to human disease, analysis of chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing data revealed that Bach2 is a c-Rel and NF-κB target gene in transformed human B cells, whereas treatment of Burkitt's lymphoma cells with inhibitors of the NF-κB/IκB kinase pathway or deletion of c-Rel or RelA resulted in loss of Bach2 expression. These data reveal a surprising tumour suppressor role for c-Rel in lymphoma development explained by regulation of Bach2 expression, underlining the context-dependent complexity of NF-κB signalling in cancer
Study of pollution in the El Jadida-Safi Atlantic coastal zone (Morocco) by using PIXE and SSNTD methods
In this work PIXE experiments were performed for measuring heavy and light
elements (ranging from aluminium to lead) concentrations inside various
polluted and unpolluted soils as well as liquid samples collected from
different phosphate factory sewers in the El Jadida-Safi Atlantic coastal
region (Morocco). In addition, uranium (238U) and thorium (232Th) contents were
evaluated in the same samples studied by using CR-39 and LR-115 type II solid
state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs). The influence of the phosphate industry
wastes on the concentrations of both radioactive and non-radioactive elements
of the samples studied was investigated
Adjoint "quarks" on coarse anisotropic lattices: Implications for string breaking in full QCD
A detailed study is made of four dimensional SU(2) gauge theory with static
adjoint ``quarks'' in the context of string breaking. A tadpole-improved action
is used to do simulations on lattices with coarse spatial spacings ,
allowing the static potential to be probed at large separations at a
dramatically reduced computational cost. Highly anisotropic lattices are used,
with fine temporal spacings , in order to assess the behavior of the
time-dependent effective potentials. The lattice spacings are determined from
the potentials for quarks in the fundamental representation. Simulations of the
Wilson loop in the adjoint representation are done, and the energies of
magnetic and electric ``gluelumps'' (adjoint quark-gluon bound states) are
calculated, which set the energy scale for string breaking. Correlators of
gauge-fixed static quark propagators, without a connecting string of spatial
links, are analyzed. Correlation functions of gluelump pairs are also
considered; similar correlators have recently been proposed for observing
string breaking in full QCD and other models. A thorough discussion of the
relevance of Wilson loops over other operators for studies of string breaking
is presented, using the simulation results presented here to support a number

Fluctuations and Instabilities of Ferromagnetic Domain Wall pairs in an External Magnetic Field
Soliton excitations and their stability in anisotropic quasi-1D ferromagnets
are analyzed analytically. In the presence of an external magnetic field, the
lowest lying topological excitations are shown to be either soliton-soliton or
soliton-antisoliton pairs. In ferromagnetic samples of macro- or mesoscopic
size, these configurations correspond to twisted or untwisted pairs of Bloch
walls. It is shown that the fluctuations around these configurations are
governed by the same set of operators. The soliton-antisoliton pair has exactly
one unstable mode and thus represents a critical nucleus for thermally
activated magnetization reversal in effectively one-dimensional systems. The
soliton-soliton pair is stable for small external fields but becomes unstable
for large magnetic fields. From the detailed expression of this instability
threshold and an analysis of nonlocal demagnetizing effects it is shown that
the relative chirality of domain walls can be detected experimentally in thin
ferromagnetic films. The static properties of the present model are equivalent
to those of a nonlinear sigma-model with anisotropies. In the limit of large

Specific Heat Study of the Magnetic Superconductor HoNi2B2C
The complex magnetic transitions and superconductivity of HoNi2B2C were
studied via the dependence of the heat capacity on temperature and in-plane
field angle. We provide an extended, comprehensive magnetic phase diagram for B
// [100] and B // [110] based on the thermodynamic measurements. Three magnetic
transitions and the superconducting transition were clearly observed. The 5.2 K
transition (T_{N}) shows a hysteresis with temperature, indicating the first
order nature of the transition at B=0 T. The 6 K transition (T_{M}), namely the
onset of the long-range ordering, displays a dramatic in-plane anisotropy:
T_{M} increases with increasing magnetic field for B // [100] while it
decreases with increasing field for B // [110]. The anomalous anisotropy in
T_{M} indicates that the transition is related to the a-axis spiral structure.
The 5.5 K transition (T^{*}) shows similar behavior to the 5.2 K transition,
i.e., a small in-plane anisotropy and scaling with Ising model. This last
transition is ascribed to the change from a^{*} dominant phase to c^{*}

Foreign policy beliefs and support for Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party
Similar to other recent Canadian elections, foreign policy did not feature prominently in the 2011 federal election campaign. In fact, many doubt Canadian public opinion on international affairs is linked to the actions taken by recent Governments. In this paper, we examine Canadian public opinion toward a range of foreign policy issues and argue that the survey questions measure two latent dimensions —militarism and internationalism. Our survey evidence indicates the existence of an “issue public” which is prepared to endorse military action and is skeptical of human rights and overseas aid programs, and this group is far more supportive of Prime Minister Harper and the Conservative Party than other Canadians. The absence of an elite discussion, either among politicians or between media elites, about the direction of Canadian foreign policy does not prevent the Canadian voter from thinking coherently about questions pertaining to this issue domain and employing these beliefs to support or oppose political parties and their leaders
Leptogenesis and Neutrino Oscillations Within A Predictive G(224)/SO(10)-Framework
A framework based on an effective symmetry that is either G(224)= SU(2)_L x
SU(2)_R xSU(4)^c or SO(10) has been proposed (a few years ago) that
successfully describes the masses and mixings of all fermions including
neutrinos, with seven predictions, in good accord with the data. Baryogenesis
via leptogenesis is considered within this framework by allowing for natural
phases (~ 1/20-1/2) in the entries of the Dirac and Majorana mass-matrices. It
is shown that the framework leads quite naturally, for both thermal as well as
non-thermal leptogenesis, to the desired magnitude for the baryon asymmetry.
This result is obtained in full accord with the observed features of the
atmospheric and solar neutrino oscillations, as well as with those of the quark
and charged lepton masses and mixings, and the gravitino-constraint. Hereby one
obtains a unified description of fermion masses, neutrino oscillations and
baryogenesis (via leptogenesis) within a single predictive framework.Comment: Efficiency factor updated, some clarifications and new references

Reach, recruitment, dose, and intervention fidelity of the GoActive school-based physical activity intervention in the UK: a mixed-methods process evaluation
School-based multi-component physical activity (PA) promotion is advocated; however, research has indicated that a multi-component approach may not always be effective at increasing adolescent PA. Evaluation of the GoActive 12-week multi-component school-based intervention showed no effect on adolescent PA. A mixed-methods process evaluation was embedded to facilitate greater understanding of the results, to elicit subgroup perceptions, and to provide insight into contextual factors influencing intervention implementation. This paper presents the reach, recruitment, dose, and fidelity of GoActive, and identifies challenges to implementation. The process evaluation employed questionnaires (1543 Year 9s), individual interviews (16 Year 9s; 7 facilitators; 9 contact teachers), focus groups (48 Year 9s; 58 mentors), alongside GoActive website analytics and researcher observations. GoActive sessions reached 39.4% of Year 9s. Intervention satisfaction was relatively high for mentors (87.3%) and facilitators (85.7%), but lower for Year 9s (59.5%) and teachers (50%). Intervention fidelity was mixed within and between schools. Mentorship was the most implemented component. Factors potentially contributing to low implementation included ambiguity of the roles subgroups played within intervention delivery, Year 9 engagement, institutional support, and further school-level constraints. Multiple challenges and varying contextual considerations hindered the implementation of GoActive in multiple school sites.
