Long-term change in benthopelagic fish abundance in the abyssal northeast Pacific Ocean
Food web structure, particularly the relative importance of bottom-up and top-down control of animal abundances, is poorly known for the Earth's largest habitats: the abyssal plains. A unique 15-yr time series of climate, productivity, particulate flux, and abundance of primary consumers (primarily echinoderms) and secondary consumers (fish) was examined to elucidate the response of trophic levels to temporal variation in one another. Towed camera sled deployments in the abyssal northeast Pacific (4100 m water depth) showed that annual mean numbers of the dominant fish genus (Coryphaenoides spp.) more than doubled over the period 1989-2004. Coryphaenoides spp. abundance was significantly correlated with total abundance of mobile epibenthic megafauna (echinoderms), with changes in fish abundance lagging behind changes in the echinoderms. Direct correlations between surface climate and fish abundances, and particulate organic carbon (POC) flux and fish abundances, were insignificant, which may be related to the varied response of the potential prey taxa to climate and POC flux. This Study provides a fare opportunity to study the long-term dynamics of an unexploited marine fish population and Suggests a dominant role for bottom-up control in this system

AbstractACTH, isoprenaline, forskolin, and dibutyryl cyclic AMP prevented insulin from stimulating adipocyte pyruvate dehydrogenase in the presence of adenosine deaminase. Antagonism was reversed by N6-phenyliso-propyladenosine as well as oxytocin. Infinite primitive directed graphs
A group G of permutations of a set Ω is primitive if it acts transitively on Ω, and the only G-invariant equivalence relations on Ω are the trivial and universal relations.
A digraph Γ is primitive if its automorphism group acts primitively on its vertex set, and is infinite if its vertex set is infinite. It has connectivity one if it is connected and there exists a vertex α of Γ, such that the induced digraph Γ∖{α} is not connected. If Γ has connectivity one, a lobe of Γ is a connected subgraph that is maximal subject to the condition that it does not have connectivity one. Primitive graphs (and thus digraphs) with connectivity one are necessarily infinite.
The primitive graphs with connectivity one have been fully classified by Jung and Watkins: the lobes of such graphs are primitive, pairwise-isomorphic and have at least three vertices. When one considers the general case of a primitive digraph with connectivity one, however, this result no longer holds. Wavelength dependent ac-Stark shift of the 1S0 - 3P1 transition at 657 nm in Ca
We have measured the ac-Stark shift of the 4s2 1S0 - 4s4p 3P1 line in 40Ca
for perturbing laser wavelengths between 780 nm and 1064 nm with a time domain
Ramsey-Borde atom interferometer. We found a zero crossing of the shift for the
mS = 0 - mP = 0 transition and \sigma polarized perturbation at 800.8(22) nm.
The data was analyzed by a model deriving the energy shift from known
transition wavelengths and strengths. To fit our data, we adjusted the Einstein
A coefficients of the 4s3d 3D - 4s4p 3P and 4s5s 3S - 4s4p 3P fine structure
multiplets. With these we can predict vanishing ac-Stark shifts for the 1S0 m =
0 - 3P1 m = 1 transition and \sigma- light at 983(12) nm and at 735.5(20) nm
