Tied factor analysis for face recognition across large pose differences
Face recognition algorithms perform very unreliably when the pose of the probe face is different from the gallery face: typical feature vectors vary more with pose than with identity. We propose a generative model that creates a one-to-many mapping from an idealized “identity” space to the observed data space. In identity space, the representation for each individual does not vary with pose. We model the measured feature vector as being generated by a pose-contingent linear transformation of the identity variable in the presence of Gaussian noise. We term this model “tied” factor analysis. The choice of linear transformation (factors) depends on the pose, but the loadings are constant (tied) for a given individual. We use the EM algorithm to estimate the linear transformations and the noise parameters from training data.
We propose a probabilistic distance metric that allows a full posterior over possible matches to be established. We introduce a novel feature extraction process and investigate recognition performance by using the FERET, XM2VTS, and PIE databases. Recognition performance compares favorably with contemporary approaches
A new HW Vir binary from the Palomar Transient Factory: PTF1 J072455.75+125300.3 - An eclipsing subdwarf B binary with a M-star companion
We report the discovery of an eclipsing binary -- PTF1 J072456125301--
composed of a subdwarf B (sdB) star () with a faint companion.
Subdwarf B stars are core helium-burning stars, which can be found on the
extreme horizontal branch. About half of them reside in close binary systems,
but few are known to be eclipsing, for which fundamental stellar parameters can
be derived.\newline We conducted an analysis of photometric data and spectra
from the Palomar 60'' and the 200" Hale telescope respectively. A quantitative
spectral analysis found an effective temperature of
\,K, log g = and
log(, typical for an sdB star. The
companion does not contribute to the optical light of the system, except
through a distinct reflection effect. From the light curve an orbital period of
0.09980(25)\,d and a system inclination of 83.56\pm0.30\,^{\circ} were
derived. The radial velocity curve yielded an orbital semi-amplitude of
K_1=95.8\pm 8.1\,\text{km s^{-1}}. The mass for the M-type dwarf companion
is . PTF1\,J072456125301 has similar atmospheric
parameters to those of pulsating sdB stars (V346 Hya stars). Therefore it could
be a high-priority object for asteroseismology, if pulsations were detected

Hexagonal Uniformly Redundant Arrays for Coded-Aperture Imaging
Uniformly redundant arrays are used in coded-aperture imaging, a technique for forming images
without mirrors or lenses. This technique is especially important for the high energy x-ray
and y-ray region above 20 keV. In this technique, a mask consisting of opaque (closed) and transparent
(open) areas is placed between the photon sources to be imaged and a position sensitive
detector or a detector array. Each source casts a shadow pattern of the mask or aperture onto the
detector. This shadow pattern may be viewed as an encoded signal for that source direction. If
each possible source code is unique, the detected composite of overlapping shadow patterns may
be decoded to produce an image of the source distribution
Discovery of Pulsed X-ray Emission from the SMC Transient RX J0117.6-7330
We report on the detection of pulsed, broad-band, X-ray emission from the
transient source RX J0117.6-7330. The pulse period of 22 seconds is detected by
the ROSAT/PSPC instrument in a 1992 Sep 30 - Oct 2 observation and by the
CGRO/BATSE instrument during the same epoch. Hard X-ray pulsations are
detectable by BATSE for approximately 100 days surrounding the ROSAT
observation (1992 Aug 28 - Dec 8). The total directly measured X-ray luminosity
during the ROSAT observation is 1.0E38 (d/60 kpc)^2 ergs s-1. The pulse
frequency increases rapidly during the outburst, with a peak spin-up rate of
1.2E-10 Hz s-1 and a total frequency change 1.8%. The pulsed percentage is
11.3% from 0.1-2.5 keV, increasing to at least 78% in the 20-70 keV band. These
results establish RX J0117.6-7330 as a transient Be binary system.Comment: 17 pages, Latex, aasms, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

A Group Theoretical Identification of Integrable Equations in the Li\'enard Type Equation : Part II: Equations having Maximal Lie Point Symmetries
In this second of the set of two papers on Lie symmetry analysis of a class
of Li\'enard type equation of the form ,
where over dot denotes differentiation with respect to time and and
are smooth functions of their variables, we isolate the equations which
possess maximal Lie point symmetries. It is well known that any second order
nonlinear ordinary differential equation which admits eight parameter Lie point
symmetries is linearizable to free particle equation through point
transformation. As a consequence all the identified equations turn out to be
linearizable. We also show that one can get maximal Lie point symmetries for
the above Li\'enard equation only when (subscript denotes
differentiation). In addition, we discuss the linearising transformations and

A balloon-borne imaging gamma-ray telescope
A balloon-borne coded-aperture gamma-ray telescope for galactic and extragalactic astronomy observations is described. The instrument, called Gamma Ray Imaging Payload (GRIP), is designed for measurements in the energy range from 30 keV to 5 MeV with an angular resolution of 0.6 deg over a 20 deg field of view. Distinguishing characteristics of the telescope are a rotating hexagonal coded-aperture mask and a thick NaI scintillation camera. Cohort Differences in Cognitive Aging in the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to examine cohort differences in cognitive performance and rates of change in episodic memory, processing speed, inductive reasoning, and general cognitive performance and to investigate whether these cohort effects may be accounted for by education attainment. METHOD: The first cohort (N = 705) was born between 1920 and 1930, whereas the second cohort (N = 646) was born between 1931 and 1941. Both birth cohorts were aged 65 to 75 years at baseline and were followed up 3 and 6 years later. Data were analyzed using linear mixed models. RESULTS: The later born cohort had better general cognitive performance, inductive reasoning, and processing speed at baseline, but cohort differences in inductive reasoning and general cognitive performance disappeared after adjusting for education. The later born cohort showed steeper decline in processing speed. Memory decline was steeper in the earlier born cohort but only from Time 1 to Time 3 when the same memory test was administered. Education did not account for cohort differences in cognitive decline. DISCUSSION: The later born cohort showed better initial performance in certain cognitive abilities, but no better preservation of cognitive abilities overtime compared with the earlier born cohort. These findings carry implications for healthy cognitive aging

We determine the autonomous three dimensional Newtonian systems which admit
Lie point symmetries and the three dimensional autonomous Newtonian Hamiltonian
systems, which admit Noether point symmetries. We apply the results in order to
determine the two dimensional Hamiltonian dynamical systems which move in a
space of constant non-vanishing curvature and are integrable via Noether point
symmetries. The derivation of the results is geometric and can be extended
