    Social interactions of migrants and trade outcomes

    Esse artigo analisa o impacto das interações sociais desenvolvidas por imigrantes no comércio bilateral das regiões francesas. Utiliza-se dados da distribuição dos imigrantes nas 95 microrregiões francesas ("département" em francês) em cinco anos para a implementação de uma medida direta do impacto das interações sociais na economia. Comparações diretas confirmam que essa medida é mais completa e robusta do que as medidas usadas na literatura de comércio internacional.This paper investigates the impact of social interactions with immigrants on bilateral trade in French regions. Applying data on the distribution of immigrants in 95 French counties ("départment" in French) during 5 years, a measure of formation of networks is proposed and its impact is tested on international trade, providing a direct measure of the impact of social interactions on the economy. Direct comparisons confirm this measure as more complete and robust than measures used in international trade literature

    Spin Resistivity in the Frustrated J1J2J_1-J_2 Model

    We study in this paper the resistivity encountered by Ising itinerant spins traveling in the so-called J1J2J_1-J_2 frustrated simple cubic Ising lattice. For the lattice, we take into account the interactions between nearest-neighbors and next-nearest-neighbors, J1J_1 and J2J_2 respectively. Itinerant spins interact with lattice spins via a distance-dependent interaction. We also take into account an interaction between itinerant spins. The lattice is frustrated in a range of J2J_2 in which we show that it undergoes a very strong first-order transition. Using Monte Carlo simulation, we calculate the resistivity ρ\rho of the itinerant spins and show that the first-order transition of the lattice causes a discontinuity of ρ\rho.Comment: submitted for publicatio

    Flexible parylene actuator for micro adaptive flow control

    This paper describes the first flexible parylene electrostatic actuator valves intended for micro adaptive flow control for the future use on the wings of micro-air-vehicle (MAV). The actuator diaphragm is made of two layers of parylene membranes with offset vent holes. Without electrostatic actuation, air can move freely from one side of the skin to the other side through the vent holes. With actuation, these vent holes are sealed and the airflow is controlled. The membrane behaves as a complete diaphragm. We have successfully demonstrated this function using a 2-mm x 2-mm parylene diaphragm electrostatic actuator valves. This work also includes the novel anti-stiction technology that is crucial to make such large-area parylene actuator diaphragm with the combined use of anti-stiction posts, self-assembled monolayers (SAM), surface roughening, and bromine trifluoride (BrFe) dry etching. With the help of SAM treatment, the operating voltage is lowered from 30 volts to 13 volts. The load deflection method is then used to measure the effective thickness of the composite diaphragm. The flexible parylene diaphragm can be deflected up to 100 μm when 150 Torr of pressure is applied. The result is fitted into a theoretical model and yields an effective thickness of 5.9 μm, which is agreeable with the actual thickness of 5.6 μm, thus proves the functionality of the device

    Dynamical coupled-channel model of kaon-hyperon interactions

    The pi N --> KY and KY --> KY reactions are studied using a dynamical coupled-channel model of meson-baryon interactions at energies where the baryon resonances are strongly excited. The channels included are: pi N, K \Lambda, and K\Sigma. The resonances considered are: N^* [S_{11}(1650), P_{11}(1710), P_{13}(1720),D_{13}(1700)]; \Delta^* [S_{31}(1900), P_{31}(1910), P_{33}(1920)]; \Lambda ^* [S_{01}(1670), P_{01}(1810)] \Sigma^* [P_{11}(1660), D_{13}(1670)]; and K^*(892). The basic non-resonant \pi N --> KY and KY --> KY transition potentials are derived from effective Lagrangians using a unitary transformation method. The dynamical coupled-channel equations are simplified by parametrizing the pi N -->pi N amplitudes in terms of empirical pi N partial-wave amplitudes and a phenomenological off-shell function. Two models have been constructed. Model A is built by fixing all coupling constants and resonance parameters using SU(3) symmetry, the Particle Data Group values, and results from a constituent quark model. Model B is obtained by allowing most of the parameters to vary around the values of model A in fitting the data. Good fits to the available data for pi^- p to K^0 \Lambda, K^0 \Sigma^0 have been achieved. The investigated kinematics region in the center-of-mass frame goes from threshold to 2.5 GeV. The constructed models can be imbedded into associated dynamical coupled-channel studies of kaon photo- and electro-production reactions.Comment: 35 pages, 11 Figure

    Re-orientation Transition in Molecular Thin Films: Potts Model with Dipolar Interaction

    We study the low-temperature behavior and the phase transition of a thin film by Monte Carlo simulation. The thin film has a simple cubic lattice structure where each site is occupied by a Potts parameter which indicates the molecular orientation of the site. We take only three molecular orientations in this paper which correspond to the 3-state Potts model. The Hamiltonian of the system includes: (i) the exchange interaction JijJ_{ij} between nearest-neighbor sites ii and jj (ii) the long-range dipolar interaction of amplitude DD truncated at a cutoff distance rcr_c (iii) a single-ion perpendicular anisotropy of amplitude AA. We allow Jij=JsJ_{ij} =J_s between surface spins, and Jij=JJ_{ij}=J otherwise. We show that the ground state depends on the the ratio D/AD/A and rcr_c. For a single layer, for a given AA, there is a critical value DcD_c below (above) which the ground-state (GS) configuration of molecular axes is perpendicular (parallel) to the film surface. When the temperature TT is increased, a re-orientation transition occurs near DcD_c: the low-TT in-plane ordering undergoes a transition to the perpendicular ordering at a finite TT, below the transition to the paramagnetic phase. The same phenomenon is observed in the case of a film with a thickness. We show that the surface phase transition can occur below or above the bulk transition depending on the ratio Js/JJ_s/J.
