    Changes of instability thresholds of rotor due to bearing misalignments

    The influence of bearing misalignment upon the dynamic characteristics of statistically indeterminant rotor bearing systems is investigated. Both bearing loads and stability speed limits of a rotor may be changed significantly by magnitude and direction of bearing misalignment. The useful theory of short journal bearings is introduced and simple analytical expressions, governing the misalignment problem, are carried out. Polar plots for the bearing load capacities and stability maps, describing the speed limit in terms of misalignment, are presented. These plots can be used by the designer to estimate deviations between calculation and experimental data due to misalignment effects

    Marshall Space Flight Center and other NASA installations have a continuing requirement for materials data from other countries involved with the development of joint international Spacelab experiments and other hardware. This need includes collecting data for common alloys to ascertain composition, physical properties, specifications, and designations. This data is scattered throughout a large number of specification statements, standards, handbooks, and other technical literature which make a manual search both tedious and often limited in extent. In recognition of this problem, a computerized database of information on alloys was developed along with the software necessary to provide the desired functions to access this data. The intention was to produce an initial database covering aluminum alloys, along with the program to provide a user-interface to the data, and then later to extend and refine the database to include other nonferrous and ferrous alloys

Tensile mod ulus, tensile strength, and elongation at break are measured, and mechanical property deterioration is compared. Copolyaramid fibers show improved hydrolytic stability and chemical resistance compared to PPTA fibers. The time dependence of degradation pro cesses can be described by two decreasing exponential functions. WAXS measurements detect only slight differences in the crystalline structure and superstructure of the treated fibers. Thus, the main origin of mechanical degradation is the destruction of intercrys talline links such as tie molecules or tie crystallites

    Feasibility of High-Power Diode Laser Array Surrogate to Support Development of Predictive Laser Lethality Model

    Predictive modeling and simulation of high power laser-target interactions is sufficiently undeveloped that full-scale, field testing is required to assess lethality of military directed-energy (DE) systems. The cost and complexity of such testing programs severely limit the ability to vary and optimize parameters of the interaction. Thus development of advanced simulation tools, validated by experiments under well-controlled and diagnosed laboratory conditions that are able to provide detailed physics insight into the laser-target interaction and reduce requirements for full-scale testing will accelerate development of DE weapon systems. The ultimate goal is a comprehensive end-to-end simulation capability, from targeting and firing the laser system through laser-target interaction and dispersal of target debris; a 'Stockpile Science' - like capability for DE weapon systems. To support development of advanced modeling and simulation tools requires laboratory experiments to generate laser-target interaction data. Until now, to make relevant measurements required construction and operation of very high power and complex lasers, which are themselves costly and often unique devices, operating in dedicated facilities that don't permit experiments on targets containing energetic materials. High power diode laser arrays, pioneered by LLNL, provide a way to circumvent this limitation, as such arrays capable of delivering irradiances characteristic of De weapon requires are self-contained, compact, light weight and thus easily transportable to facilities, such as the High Explosives Applications Facility (HEAF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where testing with energetic materials can be performed. The purpose of this study was to establish the feasibility of using such arrays to support future development of advanced laser lethality and vulnerability simulation codes through providing data for materials characterization and laser-material interaction models and to validate the accuracy of code predictions.     Mass Loss of and Temperature Distribution in Southern Pine and Douglas Fir in the Range 100 To 800°C

    Southern pine and Douglas fir test specimens were placed in an over kept at either 100, 160, 245, 400, 600, or 800 °C, and the center point temperatures and the mass losses of the specimens were measured as functions of exposure time. A model is described for calculating the temperature distribution in and the mass loss of wooden beams having rectangular cross sections. Comparisons were made between the data and the results of the model, and reasonable agreements were found between the measured and calculated temperatures and mass losses.     Complexified sigma model and duality

    We show that the equations of motion associated with a complexified sigma-model action do not admit manifest dual SO(n,n) symmetry. In the process we discover new type of numbers which we called `complexoids' in order to emphasize their close relation with both complex numbers and matroids. It turns out that the complexoids allow to consider the analogue of the complexified sigma-model action but with (1+1)-worldsheet metric, instead of Euclidean-worldsheet metric.     The use of a Salmonella Typhimurium live vaccine to control Salmonella Typhimurium in fattening pigs in field and effects on serological surveillance

    This field study was designed to evaluate the use of a live-attenuated Salmonella Typh1murium vaccine in pigs in respect of efficacy agamst S. Typhimurium at time of slaughter and the effect on serological herd monitoring using a commercial mixed LPS-ELISA. About 1289 slaughtered pigs (805 of non vaccinated groups and 484 of vaccinated groups) were investigated by bacteriological and serological examination (1149 pigs). The study showed the efficacy of an oral vaccination with a live-attenuated Salmonella Typhimunum vaccme in reducmg the number of Salmonella carrying pigs at slaughter without a detectable interference with the serological monitoring of Salmonella (using a cut off at 40% OD level)
