Effect of humidity on transonic flow
An experimental investigation of the effects of humidity-induced condensation on shock/boundary-layer
interaction has been conducted in a transonic wind-tunnel test. The test geometry considered was a wall-mounted
bump model inserted in the test section of the wind tunnel. The formation of a λ-shape condensation shock wave was
shown from schlieren visualization and resulted in a forward movement of the shock wave, reduced shock wave
strength, and reduced separation. Empirical correlations of the shock wave strength and humidity/dew point
temperature were established. For humidity levels below 0.15 or a dew point temperature of 268 K, the effect of
humidity was negligible. The unsteady pressure measurements showed that if a condensation shock wave formed and
interacted with a main shock wave, the flow becomes unsteady with periodic flow oscillations occurring at 720 Hz
Environmental effects of SPS: The middle atmosphere
The heavy lift launch vehicle associated with the solar power satellite (SPS) would deposit in the upper atmosphere exhaust and reentry products which could modify the composition of the stratosphere, mesosphere, and lower ionosphere. In order to assess such effects, atmospheric model simulations were performed, especially considering a geographic zone centered at the launch and reentry latitudes
Origin of the giant magnetic moments of Fe impurities on and in Cs films
To explore the origin of the observed giant magnetic moments ()
of Fe impurities on the surface and in the bulk of Cs films, we have performed
the relativistic LSDA + U calculations using the linearized muffin-tin orbital
(LMTO) band method. We have found that Fe impurities in Cs behave differently
from those in noble metals or in Pd. Whereas the induced spin polarization of
Cs atoms is negligible, the Fe ion itself is found to be the source of the
giant magnetic moment. The 3d electrons of Fe in Cs are localized as the 4f
electrons in rare-earth ions so that the orbital magnetic moment becomes as
large as the spin magnetic moment. The calculated total magnetic moment of , which comes mainly from Fe ion, is close to the experimentally
observed value.Comment: 4 pages including 3 figures and 1 table. Submitted to PR
The NASA Ames Research Center one- and two-dimensional stratospheric models. Part 2: The two-dimensional model
The two-dimensional model of stratospheric constituents is presented in detail. The derivation of pertinent transport parameters and the numerical solution of the species continuity equations, including a technique for treating the stiff differential equations that represent the chemical kinetic terms, and appropriate methods for simulating the diurnal variations of the solar zenith angle and species concentrations are discussed. Predicted distributions of tracer constituents (ozone, carbon 14, nitric acid) are compared with observed distributions
VLA OH and H I Zeeman Observations of the NGC 6334 Complex
We present OH and H I Zeeman observations of the NGC 6334 complex taken with
the Very Large Array. The OH absorption profiles associated with the complex
are relatively narrow (del-v_FWHM ~ 3 km s^1) and single-peaked over most of
the sources. The H I absorption profiles contain several blended velocity
components. One of the compact continuum sources in the complex (source A) has
a bipolar morphology. The OH absorption profiles toward this source display a
gradient in velocity from the northern continuum lobe to the southern continuum
lobe; this velocity gradient likely indicates a bipolar outflow of molecular
gas from the central regions to the northern and southern lobes. Magnetic
fields of the order of 200 microG have been detected toward three discrete
continuum sources in the complex. Virial estimates suggest that the detected
magnetic fields in these sources are of the same order as the critical magnetic
fields required to support the molecular clouds associated with the sources
against gravitational collapse.Comment: 14 pages, 9 postscript figures, accepted for publication in the

A Model-Based Method for Assessment of Salivary Gland and Planning Target Volume Dosimetry in Volumetric-Modulated Arc Therapy Planning on Head-and-Neck Cancer.
This study examined the relationship of achievable mean dose and percent volumetric overlap of salivary gland with the planning target volume (PTV) in volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) plan in radiotherapy for a patient with head-and-neck cancer. The aim was to develop a model to predict the viability of planning objectives for both PTV coverage and organs-at-risk (OAR) sparing based on overlap volumes between PTVs and OARs, before the planning process. Forty patients with head-and-neck cancer were selected for this retrospective plan analysis. The patients were treated using 6 MV photons with 2-arc VMAT plan in prescriptions with simultaneous integrated boost in dose of 70 Gy, 63 Gy, and 58.1 Gy to primary tumor sites, high-risk nodal regions, and low-risk nodal regions, respectively, over 35 fractions. A VMAT plan was generated using Varian Eclipse (V13.6), in optimization with biological-based generalized equivalent uniform dose (gEUD) objective for OARs and targets. Target dose coverage
Search for Interstellar Water in the Translucent Molecular Cloud toward HD 154368
We report an upper limit of 9 x 10^{12} cm-2 on the column density of water
in the translucent cloud along the line of sight toward HD 154368. This result
is based upon a search for the C-X band of water near 1240 \AA carried out
using the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph of the Hubble Space Telescope.
Our observational limit on the water abundance together with detailed chemical
models of translucent clouds and previous measurements of OH along the line of
sight constrain the branching ratio in the dissociative recombination of H_3O+
to form water. We find at the level that no more than 30% of
dissociative recombinations of H_3O+ can lead to H_2O. The observed spectrum
also yielded high-resolution observations of the Mg II doublet at 1239.9 \AA
and 1240.4 \AA, allowing the velocity structure of the dominant ionization
state of magnesium to be studied along the line of sight. The Mg II spectrum is
consistent with GHRS observations at lower spectral resolution that were
obtained previously but allow an additional velocity component to be
identified.Comment: Accepted by ApJ, uses aasp
