Proof of Bose-Einstein Condensation for Dilute Trapped Gases

The ground state of bosonic atoms in a trap has been shown experimentally to display Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). We prove this fact theoretically for bosons with two-body repulsive interaction potentials in the dilute limit, starting from the basic Schroedinger equation; the condensation is 100% into the state that minimizes the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional. This is the first rigorous proof of BEC in a physically realistic, continuum model.Comment: Revised version with some simplifications and clarifications. To appear in Phys. Rev. Let

Finite-size scaling of helix-coil transitions in poly-alanine studied by multicanonical simulations

We report results from multicanonical simulations of poly-alanine. Homopolymers of up to 30 amino acids were considered and various thermodynamic quantities as a function of temperature calculated. We study the nature of the observed helix-coil transition and present estimates for critical exponents.Comment: to appear in J.Chem.Phys. (Jan 99

Classically Integrable Cosmological Models with a Scalar Field

    Get PDF
New classes of classically integrable models in the cosmological theories with a scalar field are obtained by using freedoms of defining time and fields. In particular, some models with the sum of exponential potentials in the flat spatial metric are shown to be integrable. The model with the Sine-Gordon potential can be solved in terms of analytic continuation of the non-periodic Toda field theory.Comment: 10 pages, Late

Evidence for ferromagnetic spin-pairing superconductivity in UGe2_2: A 73^{73}Ge-NQR study under pressure

We report that a novel type of superconducting order parameter has been realized in the ferromagnetic states in UGe2_2 via 73^{73}Ge nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) experiments performed under pressure (PP). Measurements of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1)(1/T_1) have revealed an unconventional nature of superconductivity such that the up-spin band is gapped with line nodes, but the down-spin band remains gapless at the Fermi level. This result is consistent with that of a ferromagnetic spin-pairing model in which Cooper pairs are formed among ferromagnetically polarized electrons. The present experiment has shed new light on a possible origin of ferromagnetic superconductivity, which is mediated by ferromagnetic spin-density fluctuations relevant to the first-order transition inside the ferromagnetic states.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Dynamics of Vibrated Granular Monolayers

We study statistical properties of vibrated granular monolayers using molecular dynamics simulations. We show that at high excitation strengths, the system is in a gas state, particle motion is isotropic, and the velocity distributions are Gaussian. As the vibration strength is lowered the system's dimensionality is reduced from three to two. Below a critical excitation strength, a gas-cluster phase occurs, and the velocity distribution becomes bimodal. In this phase, the system consists of clusters of immobile particles arranged in close-packed hexagonal arrays, and gas particles whose energy equals the first excited state of an isolated particle on a vibrated plate.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figs, revte
