    Evaluation of a composite mobile holographic nondestructive test system

    A simplified theoretical model for the interpretation of the double-exposure holographic interference fringe loci due to the general three-dimensional displacements was derived for the specific composite mobile holographic nondestructive test system. The model, representing a good approximation to a more tedious theoretical result, predicts that a combination of in-plane and out-of-plane displacements of the surface will produce concentric circular-shaped fringe patterns with locations of their center affected by the displacements. Appropriate experiments were designed and carried out for the test of the validity of the theory. These experiments include the taking of double-exposure holograms of in-plane translations and combined in-plane and out-of-plane translations. The simplified model agreed quite well with the experimental results. Experimentally observed effects due to the curvature of the test plate and the variations of the angles of incidence of the laser light suggest that in order for the simplified model to be able to predict the test results more accurately, incidence and reflection of the laser light should be chosen as nearly perpendicular to the surface of the tested object as possible

    Hubble Space Telescope nickel-hydrogen battery testing: An update

    The Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) began testing the HST Ni-H2 Six Battery Test and the 'Flight Spare Battery' Tests approximately one year before the launch of the HST. These tests are operated and reported on by the MSFC, but are managed and funded by Goddard Space Flight Center in direct support of the HST program. The HST Ni-H2 batteries are built from Eagle Picher RNH-90-3 cells. The HST EPS (electrical power system) is a direct energy transfer power system. The HST Ni-H2 Six Battery Test is a breadboard of the HST EPS. The batteries in the test are composed of test module cells and packaged into three battery modules identical to the flight modules. This test is the HST EPS testbed. The 'Flight Spare Battery' Test is a simulation of one of the six battery channels on the HST. The cells in the test are from the flight spare lot of cells, which are the same lot of cells that three of the six HST flight batteries are made from. This test is the battery life test for the HST program

    Gravitational instability of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes under tensor mode perturbations

    We analyze the tensor mode perturbations of static, spherically symmetric solutions of the Einstein equations with a quadratic Gauss-Bonnet term in dimension D>4D > 4. We show that the evolution equations for this type of perturbations can be cast in a Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli form, and obtain the exact potential for the corresponding Schr\"odinger-like stability equation. As an immediate application we prove that for D6D \neq 6 and α>0\alpha >0, the sign choice for the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient suggested by string theory, all positive mass black holes of this type are stable. In the exceptional case D=6D =6, we find a range of parameters where positive mass asymptotically flat black holes, with regular horizon, are unstable.     Fluid Models of Many-server Queues with Abandonment

    We study many-server queues with abandonment in which customers have general service and patience time distributions. The dynamics of the system are modeled using measure- valued processes, to keep track of the residual service and patience times of each customer. Deterministic fluid models are established to provide first-order approximation for this model. The fluid model solution, which is proved to uniquely exists, serves as the fluid limit of the many-server queue, as the number of servers becomes large. Based on the fluid model solution, first-order approximations for various performance quantities are proposed

    Extended Gravity Theories and the Einstein-Hilbert Action

    I discuss the relation between arbitrarily high-order theories of gravity and scalar-tensor gravity at the level of the field equations and the action. I show that (2n+4)(2n+4)-order gravity is dynamically equivalent to Brans-Dicke gravity with an interaction potential for the Brans-Dicke field and nn further scalar fields. This scalar-tensor action is then conformally equivalent to the Einstein-Hilbert action with n+1n+1 scalar fields.     On March 7, 1887, the General Assembly of North Carolina enacted legislation that created the Croatan Normal School, founded to train Native American public school teachers. The school opened with 15 students and one teacher. Until 1953, it was the only state-supported, four-year college for Indians in the nation. The General Assembly changed the name of the institution several times, until, on July 1, 1996, it officially became The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. In recent years the institution has seen phenomenal growth. We have more than 6,000 students and, according to U.S. News and World Report, we are one of the most diverse campuses in the nation. In 2006, UNCP’s student body was 47% Caucasian, 20% Native American, 25% African American, 2% Asian, 3% Hispanic, and 3% other. The Sampson-Livermore Library is striving to meet the dynamic needs of a rapidly growing university. The challenge has been to serve the needs of our diverse population while maintaining and honoring our unique history. As a historically Native American institution, we have acquired a unique and strong collection of American Indian materials, particularly of Southeastern North Carolina tribes. Collection development objectives have focused particularly on the surrounding Lumbee Tribe. Our special collections area reflects this effort. Examples are the Lumbee River Fund, the Lumbee Collection, and numerous other photographs and other important records of our unique history. Our poster session will demonstrate how we have maintained and continue to develop our unique Native American collection

    Workplace Interventions to Prevent Disability from Both the Scientific and Practice Perspectives: A Comparison of Scientific Literature, Grey Literature and Stakeholder Observations

    Purpose The significant individual and societal burden of work disability could be reduced if supportive workplace strategies could be added to evidence-based clinical treatment and rehabilitation to improve return-to-work (RTW) and other disability outcomes. The goal of this article is to summarize existing research on workplace interventions to prevent disability, relate these to employer disability management practices, and recommend future research priorities. Methods The authors participated in a year-long collaboration that ultimately led to an invited 3-day conference, Improving Research of Employer Practices to Prevent Disability, held October 14?16, 2015, in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, USA. The collaboration included a topical review of the literature, group conference calls to identify key areas and challenges, drafting of initial documents, review of industry publications, and a conference presentation that included feedback from peer researchers and a question/answer session with an expert panel with direct employer experience. Results Evidence from randomized trials and other research designs has shown general support for job modification, RTW coordination, and organizational support, but evidence is still lacking for interventions at a more granular level. Grey literature reports focused mainly on job re-design and work organization. Panel feedback focused on organizational readiness and the beliefs and values of senior managers as critical factors in facilitating changes to disability management practices. While the scientific literature is focused on facilitating improved coping and reducing discomforts for individual workers, the employer-directed grey literature is focused on making group-level changes to policies and procedures. Conclusions Future research might better target employer practices by tying interventions to positive workplace influences and determinants, by developing more participatory interventions and research designs, and by designing interventions that address factors of organizational change.     We have studied various classical solutions in R2R^2 cosmology. Especially we have obtained general classical solutions in pure R2R^2\ cosmology. Even in the quantum theory, we can solve the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in pure R2R^2\ cosmology exactly.
