Geometric and dynamic perspectives on phase-coherent and noncoherent chaos
Statistically distinguishing between phase-coherent and noncoherent chaotic
dynamics from time series is a contemporary problem in nonlinear sciences. In
this work, we propose different measures based on recurrence properties of
recorded trajectories, which characterize the underlying systems from both
geometric and dynamic viewpoints. The potentials of the individual measures for
discriminating phase-coherent and noncoherent chaotic oscillations are
discussed. A detailed numerical analysis is performed for the chaotic R\"ossler
system, which displays both types of chaos as one control parameter is varied,
and the Mackey-Glass system as an example of a time-delay system with
noncoherent chaos. Our results demonstrate that especially geometric measures
from recurrence network analysis are well suited for tracing transitions
between spiral- and screw-type chaos, a common route from phase-coherent to
noncoherent chaos also found in other nonlinear oscillators. A detailed
explanation of the observed behavior in terms of attractor geometry is given.Comment: 12 pages, 13 figure
Atomic Hydrogen and Star Formation in the Bridge/Ring Interacting Galaxy Pair NGC 7714/7715 (Arp 284)
We present high spatial resolution 21 cm HI maps of the interacting galaxy
pair NGC 7714/7715. We detect a massive (2 x 10**9 M(sun)) HI bridge connecting
the galaxies that is parallel to but offset from the stellar bridge. A chain of
HII regions traces the gaseous bridge, with H-alpha peaks near but not on the
HI maxima. An HI tidal tail is also detected to the east of the smaller galaxy
NGC 7715, similarly offset from a stellar tail. The strong partial stellar ring
on the eastern side of NGC 7714 has no HI counterpart, but on the opposite side
of NGC 7714 there is a 10**9 M(sun) HI loop 11 kpc in radius. Within the NGC
7714 disk, clumpy HI gas is observed associated with star formation regions.
Redshifted HI absorption is detected towards the starburst nucleus. We compare
the observed morphology and gas kinematics with gas dynamical models in which a
low-mass companion has an off-center prograde collision with the outer disk of
a larger galaxy. These simulations suggest that the bridge in NGC 7714/7715 is
a hybrid between bridges seen in systems like M51 and the purely gaseous
`splash' bridges found in ring galaxies like the Cartwheel. The offset between
the stars and gas in the bridge may be due to dissipative cloud-cloud
collisions occuring during the impact of the two gaseous disks.Comment: 31 pages, Latex, 11 figures, to be published in the July 10, 1997

Epitaxial behavior and transport properties of PrBaCo2O5 thin films on (001) SrTiO3
Highly conductive PrBa Co2 O5.5+δ thin films were grown on (001) SrTi O3 by pulsed laser deposition. Microstructural studies from synchrotron x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy reveal that the as-grown PrBa Co2 O5.5+δ films are a -axis oriented with excellent single crystallinity. Two domain structures with c axes in the plane directions parallel to the substrate surface were found with an atomic sharp interface. Transport property and isothermal magnetoresistance measurements for both as-grown and post-annealing were done to understand the physical properties of the films. An abnormal positive magnetoresistance effect was observed in the postannealed films, which suggests that the spins in the system are polarized easier.open181
Comparison of two dependent within subject coefficients of variation to evaluate the reproducibility of measurement devices
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The within-subject coefficient of variation and intra-class correlation coefficient are commonly used to assess the reliability or reproducibility of interval-scale measurements. Comparison of reproducibility or reliability of measurement devices or methods on the same set of subjects comes down to comparison of dependent reliability or reproducibility parameters.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In this paper, we develop several procedures for testing the equality of two dependent within-subject coefficients of variation computed from the same sample of subjects, which is, to the best of our knowledge, has not yet been dealt with in the statistical literature. The Wald test, the likelihood ratio, and the score tests are developed. A simple regression procedure based on results due to Pitman and Morgan is constructed. Furthermore we evaluate the statistical properties of these methods via extensive Monte Carlo simulations. The methodologies are illustrated on two data sets; the first are the microarray gene expressions measured by two plat- forms; the Affymetrix and the Amersham. Because microarray experiments produce expressions for a large number of genes, one would expect that the statistical tests to be asymptotically equivalent. To explore the behaviour of the tests in small or moderate sample sizes, we illustrated the methodologies on data from computer-aided tomographic scans of 50 patients.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>It is shown that the relatively simple Wald's test (WT) is as powerful as the likelihood ratio test (LRT) and that both have consistently greater power than the score test. The regression test holds its empirical levels, and in some occasions is as powerful as the WT and the LRT.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>A comparison between the reproducibility of two measuring instruments using the same set of subjects leads naturally to a comparison of two correlated indices. The presented methodology overcomes the difficulty noted by data analysts that dependence between datasets would confound any inferences one could make about the differences in measures of reliability and reproducibility. The statistical tests presented in this paper have good properties in terms of statistical power.</p

Rhythmic dynamics and synchronization via dimensionality reduction : application to human gait
Reliable characterization of locomotor dynamics of human walking is vital to understanding the neuromuscular control of human locomotion and disease diagnosis. However, the inherent oscillation and ubiquity of noise in such non-strictly periodic signals pose great challenges to current methodologies. To this end, we exploit the state-of-the-art technology in pattern recognition and, specifically, dimensionality reduction techniques, and propose to reconstruct and characterize the dynamics accurately on the cycle scale of the signal. This is achieved by deriving a low-dimensional representation of the cycles through global optimization, which effectively preserves the topology of the cycles that are embedded in a high-dimensional Euclidian space. Our approach demonstrates a clear advantage in capturing the intrinsic dynamics and probing the subtle synchronization patterns from uni/bivariate oscillatory signals over traditional methods. Application to human gait data for healthy subjects and diabetics reveals a significant difference in the dynamics of ankle movements and ankle-knee coordination, but not in knee movements. These results indicate that the impaired sensory feedback from the feet due to diabetes does not influence the knee movement in general, and that normal human walking is not critically dependent on the feedback from the peripheral nervous system
Spontaneous creation of Kibble-Zurek solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate
When a system crosses a second-order phase transition on a finite timescale,
spontaneous symmetry breaking can cause the development of domains with
independent order parameters, which then grow and approach each other creating
boundary defects. This is known as Kibble-Zurek mechanism. Originally
introduced in cosmology, it applies both to classical and quantum phase
transitions, in a wide variety of physical systems. Here we report on the
spontaneous creation of solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates via the
Kibble-Zurek mechanism. We measure the power-law dependence of defects number
with the quench time, and provide a check of the Kibble-Zurek scaling with the
sonic horizon. These results provide a promising test bed for the determination
of critical exponents in Bose-Einstein condensates.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Managing Injuries of the Neck Trial (MINT) : design of a randomised controlled trial of treatments for whiplash associated disorders
Background: A substantial proportion of patients with whiplash injuries develop chronic
symptoms. However, the best treatment of acute injuries to prevent long-term problems is
uncertain. A stepped care treatment pathway has been proposed, in which patients are given advice
and education at their initial visit to the emergency department (ED), followed by review at three
weeks and physiotherapy for those with persisting symptoms. MINT is a two-stage randomised
controlled trial to evaluate two components of such a pathway: 1. use of The Whiplash Book versus
usual advice when patients first attend the emergency department; 2. referral to physiotherapy
versus reinforcement of advice for patients with continuing symptoms at three weeks.
Methods: Evaluation of the Whiplash Book versus usual advice uses a cluster randomised design
in emergency departments of eight NHS Trusts. Eligible patients are identified by clinicians in
participating emergency departments and are sent a study questionnaire within a week of their ED
attendance. Three thousand participants will be included. Patients with persisting symptoms three
weeks after their ED attendance are eligible to join an individually randomised study of
physiotherapy versus reinforcement of the advice given in ED. Six hundred participants will be
randomised. Follow-up is at 4, 8 and 12 months after their ED attendance. Primary outcome is the
Neck Disability Index (NDI), and secondary outcomes include quality of life and time to return to
work and normal activities. An economic evaluation is being carried out.
Conclusion: This paper describes the protocol and operational aspects of a complex intervention
trial based in NHS emergency and physiotherapy departments, evaluating two components of a
stepped-care approach to the treatment of whiplash injuries. The trial uses two randomisations,
