Taal as beheersingsmiddel

Ek stel my ten doel om in hierdie rede die heel besondere funksie van taal te behandel dat dit ’n middel is waarmee die mens uitvoering gee aan dieskeppingscën 1) en die algemene kultuuropdrag2) wat deur God in die paradys aan hom gegee is, middel dan waarmee die mens die skepping beheers

Hoogenhout (in sy Gesprekke tusse Jan Vasvat en neef Daantje Loslaat), deur Oom Lokomotief (in Die Patriot, waarin hy met sy kensketsende joernalistieke vaardigheid en gevatheid die aanvalle op Afrikaans oortuigend weerlê het)

Die wonder van Afrikaans

In die Januarie-Februarie-uitgawe van Koers het die hoofredakteur daarop gewys dat 1959 ’n gedenkjaar is, en onde randere ook vermeld dat dit die jaar is van die goue jubileum van die Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns (gestig op 2 Julie 1909). Daarby moet ons nie vergeet dat die P.A.K. (gestig19 Desember 1929) in hierdie jaar sy dertigste bestaansjaar voltooi nie. Dit is dan ook heeltemal gepas dat ons in hierdie gedenkjaar, op versoek van hierdie twee liggame wat so ontsaglik baie gedoen het vir die handhaaf en bou van ons taal, ons aandag sal saamtrek rondom die wonder van Afrikaans

An exploratory investigation of food choice behavior of teenagers with and without food allergies

Background - Understanding food choice behavior in adolescence is important because many core eating habits may be tracked into adulthood. The food choices of at least 2.3% of teenagers living in the United Kingdom are determined by food allergies. However, the effect of food allergies on eating habits in teenagers has not yet been studied.Objective - To provide an understanding of how teenagers with food allergies make food choice decisions and how these differ from those of non–food-allergic teenagers.Methods - One focus group discussion with non–food-allergic teenagers (n = 11) and 14 semistructured interviewers (7 with food-allergic and 7 with non–food-allergic teenagers) were performed (age range, 12-18 years). The focus group discussion and interviews were audiorecorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using thematic content analysis.Results - Teenagers from both groups (food-allergic and non–food-allergic) named sensory characteristics of foods as the main reason for choosing them. Some food-allergic teenagers downplayed their allergy and frequently engaged in risk-taking behavior in terms of their food choices. However, they reported difficulties in trying new foods, especially when away from home. Parental control was experienced as protective by those with food allergies, whereas non–food-allergic teenagers felt the opposite. Most teenagers, including food-allergic ones, expressed the wish to eat similar foods to their friends. Other themes did not vary between the 2 groups.Conclusion - Food-allergic teenagers strive to be able to make similar food choices to their friends, although differences to non–food-allergic teenagers exist. It is important to address these differences to improve their dietary management

Evaluation of cross-protection of bluetongue virus serotype 4 with other serotypes in sheep

Bluetongue (BT) is a non-contagious disease of sheep and other domestic and wild ruminants caused by the bluetongue virus (BTV). Currently 26 serotypes of the virus have been identified. In South Africa, 22 serotypes have been identified and BT is controlled mainly by annual vaccinations using a freeze-dried live attenuated polyvalent BTV vaccine. The vaccine is constituted of 15 BTV serotypes divided into three separate bottles and the aim is to develop a vaccine using fewer serotypes without compromising the immunity against the disease. This study is based on previously reported cross-neutralisation of specific BTV serotypes in in vitro studies. Bluetongue virus serotype 4 was selected for this trial and was tested for cross-protection against serotype 4 (control), 1 (unrelated serotype), 9, 10 and 11 in sheep using the serum neutralisation test. The purpose of the study was to determine possible cross-protection of different serotypes in sheep. Of those vaccinated with BTV-4 and challenged with BTV-1, which is not directly related to BTV-4, 20% were completely protected and 80% showed clinical signs, but the reaction was not as severe as amongst the unvaccinated animals. In the group challenged with BTV-10, some showed good protection and some became very sick. Those challenged with BTV-9 and BTV-11 had good protection. The results showed that BTV-4 does not only elicit a specific immune response but can also protect against other serotypes
