XANES study of rare-earth valency in LRu4P12 (L = Ce and Pr)

Valency of Ce and Pr in LRu4P12 (L = Ce and Pr) was studied by L2,3-edge x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. The Ce-L3 XANES spectrum suggests that Ce is mainly trivalent, but the 4f state strongly hybridizes with ligand orbitals. The band gap of CeRu4P12 seems to be formed by strong hybridization of 4f electrons. Pr-L2 XANES spectra indicate that Pr exists in trivalent state over a wide range in temperature, 20 < T < 300 K. We find that the metal-insulator (MI) transition at TMI = 60 K in PrRu4P12 does not originate from Pr valence fluctuation.Comment: 4 page

Magnetic and structural characterization of thiol capped ferromagnetic Ag nanoparticles

    Get PDF
Dodecanethiol capped Ag nanoparticles (NPs) have been independently synthesized by the well-known Brust method under the same physical-chemical conditions. The obtained NP present similar sizes ( ∼ 2 nm) but different magnetic behaviors. The extended x-ray absorption fine structure analyses at the K-edge of Ag did not reveal any noticeable structural nor topological differences among the samples. In clear contrast with the structure provided for thiol capped ferromagnetic Au NPs, the analysis also brings out the existence of Ag–S bonds in a diffuse region surrounding a reduced Ag core where the magnetism of the Ag NPs would be located. SPring-8 BL36XU: Catalytic Reaction Dynamics for Fuel Cells

    Get PDF
A tapered undulator beamline BL36XU was constructed at SPring-8 to conduct structural and electronic analysis of dynamic events on polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) cathode catalysts for the development of next-generation PEFCs. BL36XU provides various time and spatially resolved XAFS techniques in an energy range from 4.5 to 35 keV for investigating PEFCs under the operating conditions. In addition, we developed in-situ complementary measurement systems, such as in-situ time-resolved XAFS/XRD and ambient pressure HAXPES systems. This report describes the performance and present status of the BL36XU

Rapid X-ray reflectivity measurement using a new liquid interface reflectometer at SPring-8

    No full text
X-ray reflectivity measurements of liquid surfaces were demonstrated using a recently developed liquid interface reflectometer at SPring-8. The reflectometer, equipped with a two-dimensional hybrid pixel array detector (PILATUS), achieved x-ray reflectivity towards 10-9 with an integration time at each angle of only 1 sec, offering enormous potential for rapid measurements. Time-resolved measurements at a time resolution of 1 min were performed on the adsorption process of a globular protein lysozyme on a water/air interface
