    Classical Phase Space Revealed by Coherent Light

    We study the far field characteristics of oval-resonator laser diodes made of an AlGaAs/GaAs quantum well. The resonator shapes are various oval geometries, thereby probing chaotic and mixed classical dynamics. The far field pattern shows a pronounced fine structure that strongly depends on the cavity shape. Comparing the experimental data with ray-model simulations for a Fresnel billiard yields convincing agreement for all geometries and reveals the importance of the underlying classical phase space for the lasing characteristics.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures (reduced quality), accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter

    Purification through Zeno-like Measurements

    A series of frequent measurements on a quantum system (Zeno-like measurements) is shown to result in the ``purification'' of another quantum system in interaction with the former.     Intellectual property strategy : analysis of the flash memory industry

First, general perspectives and frameworks for licensing of patents and know-how are explored. Then, the participants in the flash memory industry are mapped to a product value chain, which is in turn mapped to an intellectual property value chain. We use a patent database analysis software IPVision in order to examine the patent portfolios of some of the memory chip companies.     Levels of Octachlorostyrene in Mothers' Milk and Potential Exposure Among Infants in Sendai City, Japan 2012

    Persistent organic pollutants can accumulate inside the human body, including in mothers’ milk, which may affect infant development. This cross-sectional study aimed to examine selected persistent organic pollutants in the milk of 100 mothers in Sendai city, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. We used gas-chromatography-electron capture negative chemical ionization-mass spectrometry to check for octachlorostyrene, dechlorane (Dec) plus, Dec 602, Dec 603, and Dec 604. Octachlorostyrene was detected in 86 samples at more than the method detection limit (84 pg g-lipid⁻¹) but no dechloranes were above the method detection limit (1 ng mL⁻¹ for dechlorane plus, Dec 602, and Dec 603; 20 ng mL⁻¹ for Dec 604). The mean octachlorostyrene concentration was 461 pg g-lipid−1, the median was 337 pg g-lipid⁻¹, and the standard deviation 450 pg g-lipid⁻¹. No baseline characteristics were associated with octachlorostyrene level except for mother’s occupation (stay-at-home mother, 353 ± 327 pg g-lipid⁻¹; others, 531 ± 509 pg g-lipid⁻¹). Octachlorostyrene was also significantly negatively correlated with lipid content (r = −0.35, p = 0.0004). However, the maximum intake of octachlorostyrene among infants in this study (3.5 ng/kg/day) was under the acceptable daily intake (30 ng/kg/day, derived from 12−month study in rats), and is therefore unlikely to pose a health risk

    Light-stable rhodopsin. II. An opsin mutant (TRP-265→PHE) and a retinal analog with a nonisomerizable 11-cis configuration form a photostable chromophore

    In order to prepare a completely light-stable rhodopsin, we have synthesized an analog, II, of 11-cis retinal in which isomerization at the C11-C12 cis-double bond is blocked by formation of a cyclohexene ring from the C10 to C13-methyl. We used this analog to generate a rhodopsin-like pigment from opsin expressed in COS-1 cells and opsin from rod outer segments (Bhattacharya, S., Ridge, K.D., Knox, B.E., and Khorana, H. G. (1992) J. Biol. Chem. 267, 6763-6769). The pigment (lambda max, 512 nm) formed from opsin and analog II (rhodospin-II) showed ground state properties very similar to those of rhodopsin, but was not entirely stable to light. In the present work, 12 opsin mutants (Ala-117→Phe, Glu-122→Gln(Ala, Asp), Trp-126→Phe(Leu, Ala), Trp-265→Ala(Tyr, Phe), Tyr-268→Phe, and Ala-292→Asp), where the mutations were presumed to be in the retinal binding pocket, were reconstituted with analog II. While all mutants formed rhodopsin-like pigments with II, blue-shifted (12-30 nm) chromophores were obtained with Ala-117→Phe, Glu-122→Gln(Ala), Trp-126→Leu(Ala), and Trp-265→Ala(Tyr, Phe) opsins. The extent of chromophore formation was markedly reduced in the mutants Ala-117→Phe and Trp-126→Ala. Upon illumination, the reconstituted pigments showed varying degrees of light sensitivity; the mutants Trp-126→Phe(Leu) showed light sensitivity similar to wild-type. Continuous illumination of the mutants Glu-122→Asp, Trp-265→Ala, Tyr-268→Phe, and Ala-292→Asp resulted in hydrolysis of the retinyl Schiff base. Markedly reduced light sensitivity was observed with the mutant Trp-265→Tyr, while the mutant Trp-265→Phe was light-insensitive. Consistent with this result, the mutant Trp-265→Phe showed no detectable light-dependent activation of transducin or phosphorylation by rhodopsin kinase

    Diverse Physiological Functions of FAB1 and Phosphatidylinositol 3,5-Bisphosphate in Plants

    Biological membranes are predominantly composed of structural glycerophospholipids such as phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and phosphatidylinositol. Of the membrane glycerophospholipids, phosphatidylinositol (PtdIns) and its phosphorylated derivatives (phosphoinositides) constitute a minor fraction yet exert a wide variety of regulatory functions in eukaryotic cells. Phosphoinositides include PtdIns, three PtdIns monophosphates, three PtdIns bisphosphates, and one PtdIns triphosphate, in which the hydroxy groups of the inositol head group of PtdIns are phosphorylated by specific lipid kinases. Of all the phosphoinositides in eukaryotic cells, phosphatidylinositol 3,5-bisphosphate [PtdIns(3,5)P2] constitutes the smallest fraction, yet it is a crucial lipid in animal and yeast membrane trafficking systems. Here, we review the recent findings on the physiological functions of PtdIns(3,5)P2 and its enzyme—formation of aploid and binucleate cells (FAB1)—along with the regulatory proteins of FAB1 and the downstream effector proteins of PtdIns(3,5)P2 in Arabidopsis

    Divergent roles of Smad3 and PI3-kinase in murine adriamycin nephropathy indicate distinct mechanisms of proteinuria and fibrogenesis

    Multiple transforming growth factor (TGF)-β-induced fibrogenic signals have been described in vitro. To evaluate mechanisms in vivo, we used an adriamycin nephropathy model in 129x1/Svj mice that display massive proteinuria by day 5 to7 and pathological findings similar to human focal segmental glomerulosclerosis by day 14. TGF-β mRNA expression increased after day 7 along with nuclear translocation of the TGF-β receptor-specific transcription factor Smad3. Inhibiting TGF-β prevented both pathological changes and type-I collagen and fibronectin mRNA expression, but proteinuria persisted. Renal Akt was phosphorylated in adriamycin-treated mice, suggesting PI3-kinase activation. Expression of mRNA for the p110γ isozyme of PI3-kinase was specifically increased and p110γ colocalized with nephrin by immunohistochemistry early in disease. Nephrin levels subsequently decreased. Inhibition of p110γ by AS605240 preserved nephrin expression and prevented proteinuria. In cultured podocytes, adriamycin stimulated p110γ expression. AS605240, but not a TGF-β receptor kinase inhibitor, prevented adriamycin-induced cytoskeletal disorganization and apoptosis, supporting a role for p110γ in podocyte injury. AS605240, at a dose that decreased proteinuria, prevented renal collagen mRNA expression in vivo but did not affect TGF-β-stimulated collagen induction in vitro. Thus, PI3-kinase p110γ mediates initial podocyte injury and proteinuria, both of which precede TGF-β-mediated glomerular scarring

    The Application of Restriction Landmark Genome Scanning Method for Surveillance of Non-Mendelian Inheritance in F1 Hybrids

    We analyzed inheritance of DNA methylation in reciprocal F1 hybrids (subsp. japonica cv. Nipponbare × subsp. indica cv. Kasalath) of rice (Oryza sativa L.) using restriction landmark genome scanning (RLGS), and detected differing RLGS spots between the parents and reciprocal F1 hybrids. MspI/HpaII restriction sites in the DNA from these different spots were suspected to be heterozygously methylated in the Nipponbare parent. These spots segregated in F1 plants, but did not segregate in selfed progeny of Nipponbare, showing non-Mendelian inheritance of the methylation status. As a result of RT-PCR and sequencing, a specific allele of the gene nearest to the methylated sites was expressed in reciprocal F1 plants, showing evidence of biased allelic expression. These results show the applicability of RLGS for scanning of non-Mendelian inheritance of DNA methylation and biased allelic expression
