Transition from glass to graphite in manufacture of composite aircraft structure
The transition from fiberglass reinforced plastic composites to graphite reinforced plastic composites is described. Structural fiberglass design and manufacturing background are summarized. How this experience provides a technology base for moving into graphite composite secondary structure and then to composite primary structure is considered. The technical requirements that must be fulfilled in the transition from glass to graphite composite structure are also included
Particle Topology, Braids, and Braided Belts
Recent work suggests that topological features of certain quantum gravity
theories can be interpreted as particles, matching the known fermions and
bosons of the first generation in the Standard Model. This is achieved by
identifying topological structures with elements of the framed Artin braid
group on three strands, and demonstrating a correspondence between the
invariants used to characterise these braids (a braid is a set of
non-intersecting curves, that connect one set of points with another set of
points), and quantities like electric charge, colour charge, and so on. In
this paper we show how to manipulate a modified form of framed braids to yield
an invariant standard form for sets of isomorphic braids, characterised by a
vector of real numbers. This will serve as a basis for more complete
discussions of quantum numbers in future work.Comment: 21 pages, 16 figure
Self-gravitating astrophysical mass with singular central density vibrating in fundamental mode
The fluid-dynamical model of a self-gravitating mass of viscous liquid with
singular density at the center vibrating in fundamental mode is considered in
juxtaposition with that for Kelvin fundamental mode in a homogeneous heavy mass
of incompressible inviscid liquid. Particular attention is given to the
difference between spectral formulae for the frequency and lifetime of -mode
in the singular and homogeneous models. The newly obtained results are
discussed in the context of theoretical asteroseismology of pre-white dwarf
stage of red giants and stellar cocoons -- spherical gas-dust clouds with dense

An orthologue of bacteroides fragilis NanH is the principal sialidase in tannerella forsythia
Sialidase activity is a putative virulence factor of the anaerobic periodontal pathogen Tannerella forsythia, but it is uncertain which genes encode this activity. Characterization of a putative sialidase, SiaHI, by others, indicated that this protein alone may not be responsible for all of the sialidase activity. We describe a second sialidase in T. forsythia (TF0035), an orthologue of Bacteroides fragilis NanH, and its expression in Escherichia coli. Sialidase activity of the expressed NanH was confirmed by using 2′-(4-methylumbelliferyl)-α-d-N-acetylneuraminic acid as a substrate. Biochemical characterization of the recombinant T. forsythia NanH indicated that it was active over a broad pH range, with optimum activity at pH 5.5. This enzyme has high affinity for 2′-(4-methylumbelliferyl)-α-d-N-acetylneuraminic acid (Km of 32.9 ± 10.3 μM) and rapidly releases 4-methylumbelliferone (Vmax of 170.8 ± 11.8 nmol of 4-methylumbelliferone min−1 mg of protein−1). E. coli lysates containing recombinant T. forsythia NanH cleave sialic acid from a range of substrates, with a preference for α2-3 glycosidic linkages. The genes adjacent to nanH encode proteins apparently involved in the metabolism of sialic acid, indicating that the NanH sialidase is likely to be involved in nutrient acquisition
Orientation filtering by growth-velocity competition in zone-melting recrystallization of silicon on SiO_2
We describe a method of controlling the in-plane directions of grains in (100)-textured silicon films produced by zone-melting recrystallization over amorphous SiO2. Grains having in-plane orientation within a narrow range are able to grow through an orientation filter consisting of a pattern of crystallization barriers, while grains having other orientations are occluded. The results of experiments using an orientation filter, and the parameters which optimize filter performance, are reported
Pressure effects on the heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeAuSb2
The f-electron compound CeAuSb2, which crystallizes in the ZrCuSi2-type
tetragonal structure, orders antiferromagnetically between 5 and 6.8 K, where
the antiferromagnetic transition temperature T_N depends on the occupancy of
the Au site. Here we report the electrical resistivity and heat capacity of a
high-quality crystal CeAuSb2 with T_N of 6.8 K, the highest for this compound.
The magnetic transition temperature is initially suppressed with pressure, but
is intercepted by a new magnetic state above 2.1 GPa. The new phase shows a
dome shape with pressure and coexists with another phase at pressures higher
than 4.7 GPa. The electrical resistivity shows a T^2 Fermi liquids behavior in
the complex magnetic state, and the residual resistivity and the T^2
resistivity coefficient increases with pressure, suggesting the possibility of
a magnetic quantum critical point at a higher pressure.Comment: 5 pages, 5 firure
A non-LTE abundance analysis of the post-AGB star ROA 5701
An analysis of high-resolution Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT)/ University
College London Echelle Spectrograph (UCLES) optical spectra for the ultraviolet
(UV)-bright star ROA 5701 in the globular cluster omega Cen (NGC 5139) is
performed, using non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) model
atmospheres to estimate stellar atmospheric parameters and chemical
composition. Abundances are derived for C, N, O, Mg, Si and S, and compared
with those found previously by Moehler et al. We find a general metal
underabundance relative to young B-type stars, consistent with the average
metallicity of the cluster. Our results indicate that ROA 5701 has not
undergone a gas-dust separation scenario as previously suggested. However, its
abundance pattern does imply that ROA 5701 has evolved off the AGB prior to the

Spectral Line Broadening and Angular Blurring due to Spacetime Geometry Fluctuations
We treat two possible phenomenological effects of quantum fluctuations of
spacetime geometry: spectral line broadening and angular blurring of the image
of a distance source. A geometrical construction will be used to express both
effects in terms of the Riemann tensor correlation function. We apply the
resulting expressions to study some explicit examples in which the fluctuations
arise from a bath of gravitons in either a squeezed state or a thermal state.
In the case of a squeezed state, one has two limits of interest: a coherent
state which exhibits classical time variation but no fluctuations, and a
