The size of the largest fluctuations in a market model with Markovian switching

    Get PDF
This paper considers the size of the large fluctuations of a stochastic differential equation with Markovian switching. We concentrate on processes which obey the Law of the Iterated Logarithm, or obey upper and lower iterated logarithm growth bounds on their almost sure partial maxima. The results are applied to financial market models which are subject to random regime shifts. We prove that the security exhibits the same long-run growth properties and deviations from the trend rate of growth as conventional geometric Brownian motion, and also that the returns, which are non-Gaussian, still exhibit the same growth rate in their almost sure large deviations as stationary continuous-time Gaussian processes

Space shuttle OMS helium regulator design and development

    Get PDF
Analysis, design, fabrication and design verification testing was conducted on the technological feasiblity of the helium pressurization regulator for the space shuttle orbital maneuvering system application. A prototype regulator was fabricated which was a single-stage design featuring the most reliable and lowest cost concept. A tradeoff study on regulator concepts indicated that a single-stage regulator with a lever arm between the valve and the actuator section would offer significant weight savings. Damping concepts were tested to determine the amount of damping required to restrict actuator travel during vibration. Component design parameters such as spring rates, effective area, contamination cutting, and damping were determined by test prior to regulator final assembly. The unit was subjected to performance testing at widely ranging flow rates, temperatures, inlet pressures, and random vibration levels. A test plan for propellant compatibility and extended life tests is included

The Helicopter Antenna Radiation Prediction Code (HARP)

    Get PDF
The first nine months effort in the development of a user oriented computer code, referred to as the HARP code, for analyzing the radiation from helicopter antennas is described. The HARP code uses modern computer graphics to aid in the description and display of the helicopter geometry. At low frequencies the helicopter is modeled by polygonal plates, and the method of moments is used to compute the desired patterns. At high frequencies the helicopter is modeled by a composite ellipsoid and flat plates, and computations are made using the geometrical theory of diffraction. The HARP code will provide a user friendly interface, employing modern computer graphics, to aid the user to describe the helicopter geometry, select the method of computation, construct the desired high or low frequency model, and display the results

Experimental Investigations into COā‚‚ Injection Associated Fracture Behaviour in Shale Caprocks

Leakage of CO2 through fractures is a risk for the secure storage of CO2. Fracture closure, stress state and fracture geometry will control CO2 leakage rates in storage reservoirs where the seal has been compromised by fractures. This study investigates an acid induced fracture closure remediation technique using a series of laboratory acid injection experiments in shale caprocks. The test aims to reduce the permeability of fractures through induced fracture closure in order to demonstrate the technique as a remedial measure to reduce leakage. In the tests viscous acid is injected through a range of fractured shale caprock samples under confining stress. Preliminary tests on a single sample of shale caprock show that a significant reduction in fracture permeability is achieved using acid injection across a range of confining stresses. CT scans of the fracture show the fracture closure, and appear to suggest that dissolution of asperities on the fracture face may promote fracture closure. Ongoing work will involve testing the technique in a wide range of caprock samples with different mineralogy, artificial fracture surfaces and with gaseous CO2 and CO2 rich brines included in the injected fluids to determine any reduction in the effectiveness of the remediation technique, more extensive analysis of the CT imagery will also be carried out

Bulk photonic metamaterial with hyperbolic dispersion

In this work, we demonstrate a self-standing bulk three-dimensional metamaterial based on the network of silver nanowires in an alumina membrane. This constitutes an anisotropic effective medium with hyperbolic dispersion, which can be used in sub-diffraction imaging or optical cloaks. Highly anisotropic dielectric constants of the material range from positive to negative, and the transmitted laser beam shifts both toward the normal to the surface, as in regular dielectrics, and off the normal, as in anisotropic dielectrics with the refraction index smaller than one. The designed photonic metamaterial is the thickest reported in the literature, both in terms of its physical size 1cm x 1cm x 51 mm, and the number of vacuum wavelengths, N=61 at l=0.84 mm.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figur

The S2 VLBI Correlator: A Correlator for Space VLBI and Geodetic Signal Processing

    Get PDF
We describe the design of a correlator system for ground and space-based VLBI. The correlator contains unique signal processing functions: flexible LO frequency switching for bandwidth synthesis; 1 ms dump intervals, multi-rate digital signal-processing techniques to allow correlation of signals at different sample rates; and a digital filter for very high resolution cross-power spectra. It also includes autocorrelation, tone extraction, pulsar gating, signal-statistics accumulation.Comment: 44 pages, 13 figure
