Design Chart for Reinforced Concrete Rectangular Section

Get PDF
Design charts are very useful for fast determining the percentage of reinforcement for singly and doubly reinforced concrete beams having known cross-sectional dimensions, characteristic strengths of the concrete and steel, and the ultimate design moment. A complete set of design charts is given in BS: 8110 - 85: Part 3, but it seems difficult to use these charts especially for doubly reinforced beams. In this paper, a straight-forward design chart has been developed based on BS: 8110 – 97 design rules. Several design examples have been solved using the developed chart and good results have been obtained

This study aimed to investigate the effects of grafting on the fatty acid profile and some physicochemical properties of watermelon seed and seed oil. The ‘Crimson Tide’ cultivar was used as the scion while two wild watermelon (Citrullus lanatus var. citroides (A1 and A2)), one Lagenaria siceraria (A3) and one Cucurbita maxima Duchesne x Cucurbita moschata Duchesne (A4) were used as rootstocks. The use of rootstock significantly influenced the fatty acid profile and the physical parameters of seeds and seed oils. The highest linoleic acid ratio was found in the seed oil from A1 and A2, the oil from A3 had the highest oleic acid ratio. The results showed that the content and acid value in seed oils were improved, and that total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of both seed and oil were decreased by grafting. Wild rootstocks can be used in watermelon cultivation to obtain a watermelon seed which is rich in linoleic acid.El objetivo de este estudio fue investigar los efectos del injerto en el perfil de ácidos grasos y algunas propiedades fisicoquímicas de la semilla y el aceite de semillas de sandía. Missing Data Statistics Provide Causal Insights into Data Loss in Diabetes Health Monitoring by Wearable Sensors

Get PDF
Background: Data loss in wearable sensors is an inevitable problem that leads to misrepresentation during diabetes health monitoring. We systematically investigated missing wearable sensors data to get causal insight into the mechanisms leading to missing data. Methods: Two-week-long data from a continuous glucose monitor and a Fitbit activity tracker recording heart rate (HR) and step count in free-living patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were used. The gap size distribution was fitted with a Planck distribution to test for missing not at random (MNAR) and a difference between distributions was tested with a Chi-squared test. Significant missing data dispersion over time was tested with the Kruskal–Wallis test and Dunn post hoc analysis. Results: Data from 77 subjects resulted in 73 cleaned glucose, 70 HR and 68 step count recordings. The glucose gap sizes followed a Planck distribution. HR and step count gap frequency differed significantly (p < 0.001), and the missing data were therefore MNAR. In glucose, more missing data were found in the night (23:00–01:00), and in step count, more at measurement days 6 and 7 (p < 0.001). In both cases, missing data were caused by insufficient frequency of data synchronization. Conclusions: Our novel approach of investigating missing data statistics revealed the mechanisms for missing data in Fitbit and CGM data.</p

Ricci and contracted Ricci collineations of the Bianchi type II, VIII, and IX space-times, associated with the vector fields of the form (i) one component of ξa(xb)\xi^a(x^b) is different from zero and (ii) two components of ξa(xb)\xi^a(x^b) are different from zero, for a,b=1,2,3,4a,b=1,2,3,4, are presented. In subcase (i.b), which is ξa=(0,ξ2(xa),0,0)\xi^a= (0,\xi^2(x^a),0,0), some known solutions are found, and in subcase (i.d), which is ξa=(0,0,0,ξ4(xa))\xi^a =(0,0,0,\xi^4(x^a)), choosing S(t)=const.×R(t)S(t)=const.\times R(t), the Bianchi type II, VIII, and IX space-times is reduced to the Robertson-Walker metric.Comment: 12 Pages, LaTeX, 1 Table, no figure

Common coeliacomesenteric trunk: a computed tomography radiological study

Get PDF
Background: There is an increasing trend for administration of invasive radiological interventions, laparoscopic surgery, and transplantation procedures in recent years, and determining the vascular variations prior to these procedures is crucially important. Coeliacomesenteric trunk (CMT) is among these variations. This study aimed to retrospectively evaluate this rare anomaly by computed tomography (CT). Materials and methods: A total of 1000 CT angiography images were analysed retrospectively, and the patients with mesenteric and coeliac arteries arising from the abdominal aorta with a single root were identified. The level that CMT arose, and its branching patterns were determined individually for all patients. Results: Ten patients (6 males and 4 females) with a mean age of 50.2 years (17–87 years) had CMT in CT images. Conclusions: The knowledge of variations in the CMT prior to vascular or laparoscopic interventions will contribute to early intervention in case of a complication, or to avoid from a potential damage

Li+ intercalation in isostructural Li2VO3 and Li2VO2 with O2- and mixed O2-/F- anions

Get PDF
Mixed-anion materials for Li-ion batteries have been attracting attention in view of their tunable electrochemical properties. Herein, we compare two isostructural (Fm3m) model intercalation materials Li2VO3 and Li2VO2F with O2- and mixed O2-/F- anions, respectively. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function data confirm large structural similarity over long-range and at the atomic scale for these materials. However, they show distinct electrochemical properties and kinetic behaviour arising from the different anion environments and the consequent difference in cationic electrostatic repulsion. In comparison with Li2VO3 with an active V4+/5+ redox reaction, the material Li2VO2F with oxofluoro anions and the partial activity of V3+/5+ redox reaction favor higher theoretical capacity (460 mA h g-1vs. 230 mA h g-1), higher voltage (2.5 V vs. 2.2 V), lower polarization (0.1 V vs. 0.3 V) and faster Li+ chemical diffusion (~10-9 cm2 s-1vs. ~10-11 cm2 s-1). This work not only provides insights into the understanding of anion chemistry, but also suggests the rational design of new mixed-anion battery materials

Two-dimensional array of microtraps with atomic shift register on a chip

Get PDF
Arrays of trapped atoms are the ideal starting point for developing registers comprising large numbers of physical qubits for storing and processing quantum information. One very promising approach involves neutral atom traps produced on microfabricated devices known as atom chips, as almost arbitrary trap configurations can be realised in a robust and compact package. Until now, however, atom chip experiments have focused on small systems incorporating single or only a few individual traps. Here we report experiments on a two-dimensional array of trapped ultracold atom clouds prepared using a simple magnetic-film atom chip. We are able to load atoms into hundreds of tightly confining and optically resolved array sites. We then cool the individual atom clouds in parallel to the critical temperature required for quantum degeneracy. Atoms are shuttled across the chip surface utilising the atom chip as an atomic shift register and local manipulation of atoms is implemented using a focused laser to rapidly empty individual traps.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

Muscle contractile properties directly influence shared synaptic inputs to spinal motor neurons

Get PDF
Alpha band oscillations in shared synaptic inputs to the alpha motor neuron pool can be considered an involuntary source of noise that hinders precise voluntary force production. This study investigated the impact of changing muscle length on the shared synaptic oscillations to spinal motor neurons, particularly in the physiological tremor band. Fourteen healthy individuals performed low-level dorsiflexion contractions at ankle joint angles of 90° and 130°, while high-density surface electromyography (HDsEMG) was recorded from the tibialis anterior (TA). We decomposed the HDsEMG into motor units spike trains and calculated the motor units’ coherence within the delta (1–5 Hz), alpha (5–15 Hz), and beta (15–35 Hz) bands. Additionally, force steadiness and force spectral power within the tremor band were quantified. Results showed no significant differences in force steadiness between 90° and 130°. In contrast, alpha band oscillations in both synaptic inputs and force output decreased as the length of the TA was moved from shorter (90°) to longer (130°), with no changes in delta and beta bands. In a second set of experiments (10 participants), evoked twitches were recorded with the ankle joint at 90° and 130°, revealing longer twitch durations in the longer TA muscle length condition compared to the shorter. These experimental results, supported by a simple computational simulation, suggest that increasing muscle length enhances the muscle's low-pass filtering properties, influencing the oscillations generated by the Ia afferent feedback loop. Therefore, this study provides valuable insights into the interplay between muscle biomechanics and neural oscillations

Classification of Spherically Symmetric Static Spacetimes according to their Matter Collineations

Get PDF
The spherically symmetric static spacetimes are classified according to their matter collineations. These are studied when the energy-momentum tensor is degenerate and also when it is non-degenerate. We have found a case where the energy-momentum tensor is degenerate but the group of matter collineations is finite. For the non-degenerate case, we obtain either {\it four}, {\it five}, {\it six} or {\it ten} independent matter collineations in which four are isometries and the rest are proper. We conclude that the matter collineations coincide with the Ricci collineations but the constraint equations are different which on solving can provide physically interesting cosmological solutions.Comment: 15 pages, no figure, Late

Quantization with maximally degenerate Poisson brackets: The harmonic oscillator!

Nambu's construction of multi-linear brackets for super-integrable systems can be thought of as degenerate Poisson brackets with a maximal set of Casimirs in their kernel. By introducing privileged coordinates in phase space these degenerate Poisson brackets are brought to the form of Heisenberg's equations. We propose a definition for constructing quantum operators for classical functions which enables us to turn the maximally degenerate Poisson brackets into operators. They pose a set of eigenvalue problems for a new state vector. The requirement of the single valuedness of this eigenfunction leads to quantization. The example of the harmonic oscillator is used to illustrate this general procedure for quantizing a class of maximally super-integrable systems
