    Dependence of Maximum Trappable Field on Superconducting Nb3Sn Cylinder Wall Thickness

    Uniform dipole magnetic fields from 1.9 to 22.4 kOe were permanently trapped, with high fidelity to the original field, transversely to the axes of hollow Nb3Sn superconducting cylinders. These cylinders were constructed by helically wrapping multiple layers of superconducting ribbon around a mandrel. This is the highest field yet trapped, the first time trapping has been reported in such helically wound taped cylinders, and the first time the maximum trappable field has been experimentally determined as a function of cylinder wall thickness.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table.     The Mass-Richness Relation of MaxBCG Clusters from Quasar Lensing Magnification using Variability

    Accurate measurement of galaxy cluster masses is an essential component not only in studies of cluster physics, but also for probes of cosmology. However, different mass measurement techniques frequently yield discrepant results. The SDSS MaxBCG catalog's mass-richness relation has previously been constrained using weak lensing shear, Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ), and X-ray measurements. The mass normalization of the clusters as measured by weak lensing shear is >~25% higher than that measured using SZ and X-ray methods, a difference much larger than the stated measurement errors in the analyses. We constrain the mass-richness relation of the MaxBCG galaxy cluster catalog by measuring the gravitational lensing magnification of type I quasars in the background of the clusters. The magnification is determined using the quasars' variability and the correlation between quasars' variability amplitude and intrinsic luminosity. The mass-richness relation determined through magnification is in agreement with that measured using shear, confirming that the lensing strength of the clusters implies a high mass normalization, and that the discrepancy with other methods is not due to a shear-related systematic measurement error. We study the dependence of the measured mass normalization on the cluster halo orientation. As expected, line-of-sight clusters yield a higher normalization; however, this minority of haloes does not significantly bias the average mass-richness relation of the catalog.Comment: 9 pages.     Frictional Behavior of Input Sediments to the Hikurangi Trench, New Zealand

    AbstractThe Hikurangi subduction zone hosts shallow slow‐slip events, possibly extending to the seafloor. The mechanisms allowing for this behavior are poorly understood but are likely a function of the frictional properties of the downgoing seafloor sediments. We conducted friction experiments at a large range of effective stresses, temperatures, and velocities on incoming sediment to the Hikurangi subduction zone to explore the possible connection of frictional properties to slow‐slip events. These experiments were conducted on multiple apparatuses, allowing us to access a wider range of deformation conditions than is available on any one machine. We find that the material frictionally weakens and becomes less velocity strengthening with increasing effective stress, whereas temperature has only a small effect on both friction and frictional stability. When driven at the plate convergence rate, the sediment exhibits velocity‐weakening behavior. These results imply that the frictional properties of the sediment package subducting at Hikurangi could promote slow‐slip events at the pressures, temperatures, and strain rates expected along the plate boundary thrust up to 10‐km depth without requiring elevated pore fluid pressures. The transition to velocity‐strengthening behavior at faster slip rates could provide a mechanism for limiting unstable slip to slow‐sliding velocities, rather than accommodating deformation through ordinary earthquakes

    Performance of four 16-inch-diameter ram-jet units was determined at free-stream Mach numbers of 0.49 to 1.78 over range of gas total-temperature ratios of 1.0 to 6.1. Time histories of each flight and data on thrust, drag, diffuser efficiency, and combustion are presented. A maximum thrust coefficient of 0.88 and a maximum net acceleration of 5.13 g's were observed for the four units

    The QUEST Data Processing Software Pipeline

    A program that we call the QUEST Data Processing Software Pipeline has been written to process the large volumes of data produced by the QUEST camera on the Samuel Oschin Schmidt Telescope at the Palomar Observatory. The program carries out both aperture and PSF photometry, combines data from different repeated observations of the same portion of sky, and produces a Master Object Catalog. A rough calibration of the data is carried out. This program, as well as the calibration procedures and quality checks on the output are described.Comment: 17 pages, 1 table, 8 figure

    Direct measurement of the size of 2003 UB313 from the Hubble Space Telescope

    We have used the Hubble Space Telescope to directly measure the angular size of the large Kuiper belt object 2003 UB313. By carefully calibrating the point spread function of a nearby field star, we measure the size of 2003 UB313 to be 34.3±\pm1.4 milliarcseconds, corresponding to a diameter of 2400±\pm100 km or a size 5\sim5% larger than Pluto. The V band geometric albedo of 2003 UB313 is 86±786\pm7%. The extremely high albedo is consistent with the frosty methane spectrum, the lack of red coloring, and the lack of observed photometric variation on the surface of 2003 UB313. Methane photolysis should quickly darken the surface of 2003 UB313, but continuous evaporation and redeposition of surface ices appears capable of maintaining the extreme alebdo of this body
