    Chemical composition and antifungal effects of three species of Satureja (S. hortensis, S. spicigera, and S. khuzistanica) essential oils on the main pathogens of strawberry fruit

    Due to an increasing risk of chemical contamination upon the application of synthetic fungicides to preserve fresh fruits and vegetables, essential oils are gaining increasing attentions. In this research, besides chemical analysis of the essential oils of three Satureja species (S. hortensis, S. spicigera, and S. khuzistanica) by GC-MS, their fungicidal and/or fungistatic effects on postharvest pathogens of strawberry were investigated. Essential oils were extracted by means of hydro-distillation and afterwards GC/MS analysis was performed to identify their components. Carvacrol, γ-terpinene and p-cymene were detected as the repeating main constituents of the spices, while thymol and carvacrol methyl ether were found as major components only in S. spicigera oil. In vitro results showed that at the maximum concentration, the essential oils did not possess fungicidal effects on Aspergillus niger but they exhibited fungicidal activities against Penicillium digitatum, Botrytis cinerea and Rhizopus stolonifer. However, S. khuzistanica was the strongest oil in fungicidal activity. S. hortensis oil was more effective than S. spicigera against B. cinerea whereas S. spicigera oil showed stronger fungicidal activity against R. stolonifer. In conclusion, essential oils isolated from three savory species could be suitable for applications in the food industry to control molds and improve the safety of fruits and vegetables. © 2015 Elsevier B.V

    Modulation of the hepatocyte rough endoplasmic reticulum single chloride channel by nucleotide-Mg 2+ interaction

    The effect of nucleotides on single chloride channels derived from rat hepatocyte rough endoplasmic reticulum vesicles incorporated into bilayer lipid membrane was investigated. The single chloride channel currents were measured in 200/50 mmol/l KCl cis/trans solutions. Adding 2.5 mM adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and adenosine diphosphate (ADP) did not influence channel activity. However, MgATP addition inhibited the chloride channels by decreasing the channel open probability (Po) and current amplitude, whereas mixture of Mg 2+ and ADP activated the chloride channel by increasing the Po and unitary current amplitude. According to the results, there is a novel regulation mechanism for rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) Cl - channel activity by intracellular MgATP and mixture of Mg 2+ and ADP that would result in significant inhibition by MgATP and activation by mixture of Mg 2+ and ADP. These modulatory effects of nucleotide-Mg 2+ complexes on chloride channels may be dependent on their chemical structure configuration. It seems that Mg-nucleotide-ion channel interactions are involved to produce a regulatory response for RER chloride channels. © Springer-Verlag 2012

    Causes and risk factors of urinary incontinence: Avicenna's point of view vs. contemporary findings

    Purpose: To extract the causes and risk factors of urinary incontinence from an old medical text by Avicenna entitled "Canon of Medicine" and comparing it with contemporary studies. Materials and Methods: In this study, etiology and risk factors of urinary incontinence were extracted from Avicenna's "Canon of Medicine". Commentaries written on this book and other old reliable medical texts about bladder and its diseases were also studied. Then the achieved information was compared with contemporary findings of published articles. Results: Urinary incontinence results from bladder dysfunction in reservoir phase. Bladder's involuntary muscles and voluntary external sphincter are two main components which are involved in this process. Urinary incontinence can exist without obvious structural and neuronal etiologies. According to Avicenna, distemperment of muscular tissue of bladder and external sphincter is the cause for urinary incontinence in such cases. Distemperment is the result of bothering qualities in tissue, i.e.: "wet" and "cold". They are the two bothering qualities which are caused by extracorporeal and intracorporeal factors. Interestingly, the positive associations of some of these factors with urinary incontinence have been shown in recent researches. Conclusion: "Cold" and "wet" distemperment of bladder and external sphincter can be independent etiologies of urinary incontinence which should be investigated

    Investigating and identifying an interactive mobile learning model for improving the safety in the Railway

    Background and Objective:Rail transport is one of the most important infrastructures for the development of the country due to its special advantages and adaptation to the environment. Article 24 and 25 of the economic affairs of the general policies of the Sixth Development Plan emphasizes the priority of the rail transport industry. In articles paragraphs 34 and 38 of the ICT affairs of this plan the development of communicative and intelligent systems is also referred to. The role of education in the implementation of these programs is very important, and the study, design of the model and the implementation of intelligent learning systems accelerate the development of learning in rail transport. Achieving organizational missions depends on the ability of employees to perform the assigned tasks and adapt to a changing environment. Implementing training and improving human resources allows people to effectively continue their activities and increase their efficiency in accordance with organizational and environmental changes. An Interactive Mobile Learning System (IMLS) can be designed as a tool for implementing the theory of Heutagogy. This approach is considered as a chain of andragogy and has a process look. Considering the importance of improving safety in the operation of railway, there are many facilities in the areas of infrastructure, fleet and operation of this task. The problem that the Railway Company has faced is the weakness in the safe operation of these equipment and the maintenance caused by the lack of effective training that can be identified as one of the major contributing factors to the disaster. Methods: In this research, the size of the population was 3000 drivers of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways; 280 were selected as the sample based on clustering sampling. By studying the models and learning approaches through the use of statistical tools, an intelligent model for moving from training to learning, participatory, ubiquitous and informed, and appropriate to the railway and the existing infrastructure was validated and implemented by Smart PLS software. The impact of this system on safety and the reduction of the actual workplace environmental hazards was studied. Findings: The results of the study indicated that the establishment of an interactive mobile learning system impacts the safety by influencing the drivers’ accountability, accessibility and performance. Conclusion: The intelligent interactive learning system as a potential tool for staff training and empowerment is examined. The role of education in the implementation of these programs is vital and can speed up the study and design of the model and the implementation of this system to develop the learning of the development of the country’s railing system.   ===================================================================================== COPYRIGHTS  ©2019 The author(s).     Anti-cancer effects of cinnamon: Insights into its apoptosis effects

    Cancer is known as a leading cause of death worldwide. In the last two decades, the incidence of cancer has been dramatically increased mostly due to lifestyle changes. The importance of this issue has attracted further attention to discover novel therapies to prevent and treat cancers. According to previous studies, drugs used to treat cancer have shown significant limitations. Therefore, the role of herbal medicines alone or in combination with chemotherapy drugs has been extensively studied in cancer treatment. Cinnamon is a natural component showing a wide range of pharmacological functions including anti-oxidant, anti-microbial and anti-cancer activities. Impaired apoptosis plays critical roles in the initiation and progression of cancer. Increasing evidence indicates that cinnamon, as a therapeutic agent, has anti-cancer effects via affecting numerous apoptosis-related pathways in cancer cells. Here, we highlighted anticancer properties of cinnamon, particularly through targeting apoptosis-related mechanisms. © 2019 Elsevier Masson SA

    Burden of ischemic heart diseases in Iran, 1990-2010: Findings from the global burden of disease study 2010

    Background: Cardiovascular diseases are viewed worldwide as one of the main causes of death.This study aims to report the burden of ischemic heart diseases (IHDs) in Iran by using data of the global burden of disease (GBD) study, 1990-2010. Materials and Methods: The GBD study 2010 was a systematic effort to provide comprehensive data to calculate disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for diseases and injuries in the world. Years of life lost (YLLs) due to premature mortality were computed on the basis of cause-of-death estimates, using Cause of Death Ensemble model (CODEm). Years lived with disability (YLDs) were assessed by the multiplication of prevalence, the disability weight for a sequel, and the duration of symptoms. A systematic review of published and unpublished data was performed to evaluate the distribution of diseases, and consequently prevalence estimates were calculated with a Bayesian meta-regression method (DisMod-MR). Data from population-based surveys were used for producing disability weights. Uncertainty from all inputs into the calculations of DALYs was disseminated by Monte Carlo simulation techniques. Results: The age-standardized IHDs DALY specified rate decreased 31.25 over 20 years from 1990 to 2010 from 4720 (95% uncertainty interval (UI): 4,341-5,099) to 3,245 (95% UI: 2,810-3,529) person-years per 100,000. The decrease were 38.14% among women and 26.87% among men. The age-standardized IHDs death specefied rate decreased by 21.17% from 222) 95% UI: 207-243 (to 175 (95% UI:152-190) person-years per 100,000 in both the sexes. The age-standardized YLL and YLD rates decreased 32.05% and 4.28%, respectively, in the above period. Conclusion: Despite decreasing age-standardized IHD of mortality, YLL, YLD, and DALY rates from 1990 to 2010, population growth and aging increased the global burden of IHD. YLL has decreased more than IHD deaths and YLD since 1990 but IHD mortality remains the greatest contributor to disease burden. © 2015 Journal of Research in Medical Sciences

    Histologic tissue response to furcation perforation repair using mineral trioxide aggregate or dental pulp stem cells loaded onto treated dentin matrix or tricalcium phosphate

    Objectives The aim of this study is to compare the effect of treated dentine matrix (TDM) and tricalcium phosphate (TCP) scaffolds on odontogenic differentiation and mineralization of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) in furcation perforations created in the pulp chamber floor of premolar teeth in dogs. Material and methods DPSCs were isolated and cultured from the dental pulp of the maxillary left second and third premolars of dogs. The DPSCs were loaded on TCP (SC+TCP) and TDM (SC+TDM) scaffolds and inserted into intentionally perforated pulp chamber floors of premolars in dogs; six teeth were used for each group. Three more groups of six specimens were created, and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), TDM, and TCP were inserted into the perforations to act as controls. An intact premolar and no treatment in the perforation site were used as positive and negative controls respectively. After 3 months, the animals were sacrificed and the type of inflammation, presence of dentine, continuation and type of cementum, type of connective tissue, and presence of foreign body reaction were evaluated, and significant differences were between groups determined using the Fisher’s exact test. The evaluation of the amount of inflammation and the percentage of new bone formation was evaluated using the Mann-Whitney U test. Results The negative control group was associated with severe inflammation and granulation tissue formation. In the positive control group, intact periodontal tissues and no inflammation were observed. Dentine bridge formation was not seen in specimens of any group. The specimens in the SC+TDM group were associated with significantly more bone formation than other groups (P < 0.001). The amount of inflammation was less than 10 % in specimens of all groups with the exception of three specimens in the TCP group that were categorized as 10–30 %. Chronic inflammation without foreign body reactions was the major pattern of inflammation in groups. Formation of cementum with a cellular and continuous appearance was seen in all specimens. Conclusions SC+TDM was associated with significantly more bone formation when used to repair uninfected furcation perforations in the premolar teeth of dogs. Clinical relevance Application of TDM as a biological scaffold in combination with DPSCs may offer an advantage during the repair of root perforation defects

    Ginzburg-Landau theory of phase transitions in quasi-one-dimensional systems

    A wide range of quasi-one-dimensional materials, consisting of weakly coupled chains, undergo three-dimensional phase transitions that can be described by a complex order parameter. A Ginzburg-Landau theory is derived for such a transition. It is shown that intrachain fluctuations in the order parameter play a crucial role and must be treated exactly. The effect of these fluctuations is determined by a single dimensionless parameter. The three-dimensional transition temperature, the associated specific heat jump, coherence lengths, and width of the critical region, are computed assuming that the single chain Ginzburg-Landau coefficients are independent of temperature. The width of the critical region, estimated from the Ginzburg criterion, is virtually parameter independent, being about 5-8 per cent of the transition temperature.     The recovery movement and its implications for policy, commissioning and practice

    While a recovery approach is widespread and relatively unquestioned in the USA, its implementation in the UK and to a lesser extent in Australia has provoked a number of questions about what this means in practice and what some of the implications are for treatment. This is particularly important as there is growing interest in recovery in Western Europe with policy recognition in Belgium and the Netherlands, and increased interest in research issues around recovery. What this article sets out to do is to discuss the implications of a recovery model for commissioning and treatment systems, with a focus on where recovery approaches sit and what they can offer in terms of added value to treatment approaches
