Photoluminescence quantum efficiency of dense silicon nanocrystal ensembles in SiO2

    Get PDF
The photoluminescence decay characteristics of silicon nanocrystals in dense ensembles fabricated by ion implantation into silicon dioxide are observed to vary in proportion to the calculated local density of optical states. A comparison of the experimental 1/e photoluminescence decay rates to the expected spontaneous emission rate modification yields values for the internal quantum efficiency and the intrinsic radiative decay rate of silicon nanocrystals. A photoluminescence quantum efficiency as high as 59%±9% is found for nanocrystals emitting at 750 nm at low excitation power. A power dependent nonradiative decay mechanism reduces the quantum efficiency at high pump intensity

Electron- and Positron-Impact Ionization of Inert Gases

Triple-differential cross sections (TDCS) are presented for the electron and positron impact ionization of inert gas atoms in a range of geometries where a number of significant few body effects compete to define the shape of the TDCS. Using both positrons and electrons as projectiles has opened up the possibility of performing complementary studies which could effectively isolate competing interactions which cannot be separately detected in an experiment with a single projectile. A comparison is presented between theory and the recent experiments of [Gavin, deLucio, and DuBois, Phys. Rev. A95, 062703 (2017)] for e± and contrasted with the results from earlier electron experiments. For the special case of xenon(5p), cross sections are presented for both electron- and positron-impact ionization in kinematics where the electron case appears well understood. The kinematics are then varied in order to focus on the possible role of distortion, exchange, and target wave-function effects

Configuration development study of the X-24C hypersonic research airplane

Bottom line results were made of a three-phase study to determine the feasibility of designing, building, and operating, and maintaining an air-launched high performance aircraft capable of cruising at speeds up to Mach 8 for short durations. The results show that Lockalloy heat-sink structure affords the capability for a 'work-horse' vehicle which can serve as an excellent platform for this research. It was further concluded that the performance of a blended wing body configuration surpassed that of a lifting body design for typical X-24C missions. The cost of a two vehicle program, less engines, B-52 modification and contractor support after delivery, can be kept within $70M (in Jan. 1976 dollars)

Energy-Sharing (e,2e) collisions: Ionization of the Inert Gases in the Perpendicular Plane

    Get PDF
The triple differential cross section for ionization of the inert gases He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe in energy-sharing perpendicular plane geometry is investigated. Encouraging agreement with recent experiments is found using the distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA). Mechanisms are discussed which explain the He and Ne data but which seem to be masked by the greater distortion effects in the heavier targets. The inclusion of postcollisional interaction is explored using Gamow, Nee, and Ward-Macek, Mee, factors. While both help to improve the shape of the cross section for He and Ne at the lower energies, they are not successful for the other targets, and both factors prove to be too strong for all the inert gases with increasing impact energy. It is well known that Nee destroys normalization. Comparing DWBA + Mee results with some absolute experimental points at 1 and 2 eV indicates that it is also not to be trusted on normalization. An interesting situation with Ar is highlighted near 25 eV, where the cross section may be tending towards a strong interference minimum or zero

Unexpected Higher-Order Effects in Charged Particle Impact Ionization at High Energies

    Get PDF
Most of the experimental and theoretical studies of electron-impact ionization of atoms, referred to as (e, 2e), have concentrated on the scattering plane. The assumption has been that all the important physical effects will be observable in the scattering plane. However, very recently it has been shown that, for C6+-helium ionization, experiment and theory are in nice agreement in the scattering plane and in very bad agreement out of the scattering plane. This lack of agreement between experiment and theory has been explained in terms of higher-order scattering effects between the projectile and target ion. We have examined electron-impact ionization of magnesium and have observed similar higher-order effects. The results of the electron-impact ionization of magnesium indicate the possible deficiencies in the calculation of fully differential cross sections in previous heavy particle ionization work

Electron-irradiated two-terminal, monolithic InP/Ga0.47In0.53As tandem solar cells and annealing of radiation damage

    Get PDF
Radiation damage results from two-terminal monolithic InP/Ga(0.47)In(0.53)As tandem solar cells subject to 1 MeV electron irradiation are presented. Efficiencies greater than 22 percent have been measured by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory from 2x2 sq cm cells at 1 sun, AMO (25 C). The short circuit current density, open circuit voltage and fill factor are found to tolerate the same amount of radiation at low fluences. At high fluence levels, slight differences are observed. Decreasing the base amount of radiation at the Ga(0.47)In(0.53)As bottomcell improved the radiation resistance of J(sub sc) dramatically. This is turn, extended the series current flow through the subcell substantially up to a fluence of 3x10(exp 15) cm(exp -2) compared to 3x10(exp 14) cm(exp -2), as observed previously. The degradation of the maximum power output form tandem device is comparable to that from shallow homojunction (SHJ) InP solar cells, and the mechanism responsible for such degradation is explained in terms of the radiation response of the component cells. Annealing studies revealed that the recovery of the tandem cell response is dictated by the annealing characteristics exhibited by SHJ InP solar cells
