    Adaptive medium access control for VoIP services in IEEE 802.11 WLANs

    Abstract- Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is an important service with strict Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). The popular Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) of IEEE 802.11 Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol adopts a Binary Exponential Back-off (BEB) procedure to reduce the packet collision probability in WLANs. In DCF, the size of contention window is doubled upon a collision regardless of the network loads. This paper presents an adaptive MAC scheme to improve the QoS of VoIP in WLANs. This scheme applies a threshold of the collision rate to switch between two different functions for increasing the size of contention window based on the status of network loads. The performance of this scheme is investigated and compared to the original DCF using the network simulator NS-2. The performance results reveal that the adaptive scheme is able to achieve the higher throughput and medium utilization as well as lower access delay and packet loss probability than the original DCF

    An effective ant-colony based routing algorithm for mobile ad-hoc network

    An effective Ant-Colony based routing algorithm for mobile ad-hoc network is proposed in this paper. In this routing scheme, each path is marked by path grade, which is calculated from the combination of multiple constrained QoS parameters such as the time delay, packet loss rate and bandwidth, etc. packet routing is decided by the path grade and the queue buffer length of the node. The advantage of this scheme is that it can effectively improve the packet delivery ratio and reduce the end-to-end delay. The simulation results show that our proposed algorithm can improve the packet delivery ratio by 9%-22% and the end-to-end delay can be reduced by 14%-16% as compared with the conventional QAODV and ARA routing schemes

    Kalman filter based estimation of neutral-axis position of bridge deck sections using strain monitoring data

    The neutral-axis position has been recognized as a damage indicator for bridge deck assessment because of its high sensitivity to local damage on deck sections. It can be estimated when strain responses at the top and bottom of a deck cross-section under traffic loading are measured. However, the accuracy of neutral-axis position estimation directly using the measured strain responses might be significantly distorted in the presence of measurement noise and varying traffic load patterns. In this study, a Kalman filter (KF) estimator is formulated to locate the neutral-axis position from measured strain responses under traffic loading. Its capability for consistently locating the neutral-axis position under varying traffic load patterns is verified using the field monitoring data of traffic-induced strain responses acquired from the suspension Tsing Ma Bridge under diverse load scenarios (highway traffic, railway traffic, and their combination). The results indicate that the proposed KF estimator gives rise to consistent neutral-axis position estimation results which are independent of load conditions and patterns

    Temperature dependence of electron-spin relaxation in a single InAs quantum dot at zero applied magnetic field

    The temperature-dependent electron spin relaxation of positively charged excitons in a single InAs quantum dot (QD) was measured by time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy at zero applied magnetic fields. The experimental results show that the electron-spin relaxation is clearly divided into two different temperature regimes: (i) T < 50 K, spin relaxation depends on the dynamical nuclear spin polarization (DNSP) and is approximately temperature-independent, as predicted by Merkulov et al. (ii) T > about 50 K, spin relaxation speeds up with increasing temperature. A model of two LO phonon scattering process coupled with hyperfine interaction is proposed to account for the accelerated electron spin relaxation at higher temperatures.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Energy efficient resource allocation in 5G hybrid heterogeneous networks: A game theoretic approach

    Millimeter wave (mmWave) technology integrated with heterogeneous networks (HetNets) has emerged as a new wave to overcome the thirst for higher data rates and severe shortage of spectrum. In this paper, we consider the uplink of a hybrid HetNet with femtocells overlaid on a macrocell, and formulate a two layer game theoretic framework to maximise the energy efficiency (EE) while optimising the network resources. The outer layer allows each femtocell access point (FAP) to maximise the data rate of its users by selecting the frequency band either from the sub-6 GHz and the mmWave. The solution to this non-cooperative game can be obtained by using pure strategy Nash equilibrium. The inner layer ensures the energy efficient user association method subject to the minimum rate and maximum transmission power constraints by using dual decomposition approach. Simulation results show that the proposed hybrid HetNet scheme exploiting the mmWave frequency band improves the sum-rate and EE in comparison to the scenario where all the networks operate at sub-6 GHz frequency band. The performance can further be enhanced by incorporating the power control mechanism

    Bromelain and Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Diabetes: An Exploratory Randomized, Placebo Controlled, Double Blind Clinical Trial

    Objective: The objective of this trial was to assess whether the dietary supplement (bromelain) had the potential to reduce plasma fibrinogen and other Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) risk factors in patients with diabetes. Methods: This randomized placebo controlled, double blind, parallel design, efficacy study was carried out in China and investigated the effect of 12 weeks of bromelain (1.05g/day) on plasma fibrinogen . This randomized controlled trial (RCT) recruited 68 Chinese diabetic patients (32 males and 36 females; Han origin, mean age of 61.26 years (Standard Deviation, 12.62 years)) with at least one CVD risk factor. Patients were randomized into either bromelain or placebo group. While bromelain group received bromelain capsule, the placebo group received placebo capsule which consisted inert ingredient and has no treatment effect. Patients and researcher were blinded and did not know whether they received bromelain or placebo capsules. Plasma fibrinogen, CVD risk factors and anthropometric indicators were determined at baseline and at 12 weeks. Results: The change in the fibrinogen level in the placebo group at the end of the study showed a mean reduction of 0.36g/L (Standard Deviation (SD) 0.96g/L) compared with the mean reduction of 0.13g/L (SD 0.86g/L) for the bromelain group. However, there was no significant difference in the mean change in fibrinogen between the placebo and bromelain groups (mean difference=0.23g/L (SD 0.22g/L), p=0.291). Similarly, the difference in mean change in other CVD risk factors (blood lipids, blood pressure), blood glucose, C - reactive protein (CRP) and anthropometric measures between the bromelain and placebo groups was also not statistically significant. Conclusions: This RCT failed to show a beneficial effect in reducing fibrinogen or influencing other selected CVD risk factors but suggests other avenues for subsEquent research on bromelain

    An adaptive medium access control scheme for mobile ad hoc networks under self-similar traffic

Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs) consist of a collection of mobile stations communicating with each other without the use of any pre-existent infrastructure. The self-organization characteristic of MANETs makes them suitable for many real-world applications where network topology changes frequently. As a result, the development of efficient MAC (Medium Access Control) protocols in MANETs is extremely challenging. Self-similar traffic with scale-invariant burstiness can generate bursty network loads and thus seriously degrade the system performance. This paper presents an adaptive MAC scheme which dynamically adjusts the increasing function and resetting mechanism of contention window based on the status of network loads. The performance of this scheme is investigated in comparison with the legacy DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) under self-similar traffic and different mobility models.
