Dispersive estimates for Schr\"odinger operators with point interactions in
The study of dispersive properties of Schr\"odinger operators with point
interactions is a fundamental tool for understanding the behavior of many body
quantum systems interacting with very short range potential, whose dynamics can
be approximated by non linear Schr\"odinger equations with singular
interactions. In this work we proved that, in the case of one point interaction
in , the perturbed Laplacian satisfies the same
estimates of the free Laplacian in the smaller regime . These
estimates are implied by a recent result concerning the boundedness of
the wave operators for the perturbed Laplacian. Our approach, however, is more
direct and relatively simple, and could potentially be useful to prove optimal

Ordering intermetallic alloys by ion irradiation: a way to tailor magnetic media
Combining He ion irradiation and thermal mobility below 600K, we both trigger
and control the transformation from chemical disorder to order in thin films of
an intermetallic ferromagnet (FePd). Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations show how
the initial directional short range order determines order propagation.
Magnetic ordering perpendicular to the film plane was achieved, promoting the
initially weak magnetic anisotropy to the highest values known for FePd films.
This post-growth treatment should find applications in ultrahigh density

Comparison of Different Parallel Implementations of the 2+1-Dimensional KPZ Model and the 3-Dimensional KMC Model
We show that efficient simulations of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang interface
growth in 2 + 1 dimensions and of the 3-dimensional Kinetic Monte Carlo of
thermally activated diffusion can be realized both on GPUs and modern CPUs. In
this article we present results of different implementations on GPUs using CUDA
and OpenCL and also on CPUs using OpenCL and MPI. We investigate the runtime
and scaling behavior on different architectures to find optimal solutions for
solving current simulation problems in the field of statistical physics and

Influence of vortex-vortex interaction on critical currents across low-angle grain boundaries in YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films
Low-angle grain boundaries with misorientation angles theta < 5 degrees in
optimally doped thin films of YBCO are investigated by magnetooptical imaging.
By using a numerical inversion scheme of Biot-Savart's law the critical current
density across the grain boundary can be determined with a spatial resolution
of about 5 micrometers. Detailed investigation of the spatially resolved flux
density and current density data shows that the current density across the
boundary varies with varying local flux density. Combining the corresponding
flux and current pattern it is found that there exists a universal dependency
of the grain boundary current on the local flux density. A change in the local
flux density means a variation in the flux line-flux line distance. With this
knowledge a model is developped that explains the flux-current relation by
means of magnetic vortex-vortex interaction.Comment: 7 pages, 14 figure
Inter- and intragrain currents in bulk melt-grown YBaCuO rings
A simple contactless method suitable to discern between the intergrain
(circular) current, which flows in the thin superconducting ring, and the
intragrain current, which does not cross the weakest link, has been proposed.
At first, we show that the intergrain current may directly be estimated from
the magnetic flux density measured by the Hall sensor positioned
in the special points above/below the ring center. The experimental
and the numerical techniques to determine the value are discussed. Being
very promising for characterization of a current flowing across the joints in
welded YBaCuO rings (its dependencies on the temperature and the external
magnetic field as well as the time dissipation), the approach has been applied
to study corresponding properties of the intra- and intergrain currents flowing
across the -twisted grain boundaries which are frequent in bulk
melt-textured YBaCuO samples. We present experimental data related to the flux
penetration inside a bore of MT YBaCuO rings both in the non-magnetized, virgin
state and during the field reversal. The shielding properties and their
dependence on external magnetic fields are also studied. Besides, we consider
the flux creep effects and their influence on the current re-distribution

Phrenologyand the Insanity Defence: Medical Jurisprudence in the McNaughtan Trial
This thesis argues that phrenology shaped the defence argument in the McNaughtan trial. The role of this now-discredited science exemplifies the negotiation of scientific, legal and lay knowledge in the early nineteenth century, at a time when science was challenging the primacy of lay understandings of insanity. Phrenological ideas allowed the defence to privilege medical opinion over lay opinion, and propose a model of the mind that could account for McNaughtan’s insanity. This was possible because the medical and professional communities accepted some elements of the science. They applied these principles when explaining and verifying insanity in a courtroom setting
A weakly stable algorithm for general Toeplitz systems
We show that a fast algorithm for the QR factorization of a Toeplitz or
Hankel matrix A is weakly stable in the sense that R^T.R is close to A^T.A.
Thus, when the algorithm is used to solve the semi-normal equations R^T.Rx =
A^Tb, we obtain a weakly stable method for the solution of a nonsingular
Toeplitz or Hankel linear system Ax = b. The algorithm also applies to the

Dried blood spot UHPLC-MS/MS analysis of oseltamivir and oseltamivircarboxylate—a validated assay for the clinic
The neuraminidase inhibitor oseltamivir (Tamiflu®) is currently the first-line therapy for patients with influenza virus infection. Common analysis of the prodrug and its active metabolite oseltamivircarboxylate is determined via extraction from plasma. Compared with these assays, dried blood spot (DBS) analysis provides several advantages, including a minimum sample volume required for the measurement of drugs in whole blood. Samples can easily be obtained via a simple, non-invasive finger or heel prick. Mainly, these characteristics make DBS an ideal tool for pediatrics and to measure multiple time points such as those needed in therapeutic drug monitoring or pharmacokinetic studies. Additionally, DBS sample preparation, stability, and storage are usually most convenient. In the present work, we developed and fully validated a DBS assay for the simultaneous determination of oseltamivir and oseltamivircarboxylate concentrations in human whole blood. We demonstrate the simplicity of DBS sample preparation, and a fast, accurate and reproducible analysis using ultra high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. A thorough validation on the basis of the most recent FDA guidelines for bioanalytical method validation showed that the method is selective, precise, and accurate (≤15% RSD), and sensitive over the relevant clinical range of 5–1,500 ng/mL for oseltamivir and 20–1,500 ng/mL for the oseltamivircarboxylate metabolite. As a proof of concept, oseltamivir and oseltamivircarboxylate levels were determined in DBS obtained from healthy volunteers who received a single oral dose of Tamiflu®
