    Study of the true performance limits of the Astrometric Multiplexing Area Scanner (AMAS)

    The Astrometric Multiplexing Area Scanner (AMAS) is an instrument designed to perform photoelectric long focus astrometry of small fields. Modulation of a telescope focal plane with a rotating Ronchi ruling produces a frequency modulated signal from which relative positions and magnitudes can be extracted. Evaluation instrumental precision, accuracy and resolution characteristics with respect to a variety of instrumental and cosmical parameters indicates 1.5 micron precision and accuracy for single stars under specific conditions. This value decreases for increased number of field stars, particularly for fainter stars

    Validation of a novel scoring system for changes in skeletal manifestations of hypophosphatasia in newborns, infants, and children: The Radiographic Global Impression of Change scale

    Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is the heritable metabolic disease characterized by impaired skeletal mineralization due to low activity of the tissue-nonspecific isoenzyme of alkaline phosphatase. Although HPP during growth often manifests with distinctive radiographic skeletal features, no validated method was available to quantify them, including changes over time. We created the Radiographic Global Impression of Change (RGI-C) scale to assess changes in the skeletal burden of pediatric HPP. Site-specific pairs of radiographs of newborns, infants, and children with HPP from three clinical studies of asfotase alfa, an enzyme replacement therapy for HPP, were obtained at baseline and during treatment. Each pair was scored by three pediatric radiologists ( raters ), with nine raters across the three studies. Intrarater and interrater agreement was determined by weighted Kappa coefficients. Interrater reliability was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) and by two-way random effects analysis of variance (ANOVA) and a mixed-model repeated measures ANOVA. Pearson correlation coefficients evaluated relationships of the RGI-C to the Rickets Severity Scale (RSS), Pediatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument Global Function Parent Normative Score, Childhood Health Assessment Questionnaire Disability Index, 6-Minute Walk Test percent predicted, and Z-score for height in patients aged 6 to 12 years at baseline. Eighty-nine percent (8/9) of raters showed substantial or almost perfect intrarater agreement of sequential RGI-C scores (weighted Kappa coefficients, 0.72 to 0.93) and moderate or substantial interrater agreement (weighted Kappa coefficients, 0.53 to 0.71) in patients aged 0 to 12 years at baseline. Moderate-to-good interrater reliability was observed (ICC, 0.57 to 0.65). RGI-C scores were significantly (p ≤ 0.0065) correlated with the RSS and with measures of global function, disability, endurance, and growth in the patients aged 6 to 12 years at baseline. Thus, the RGI-C is valid and reliable for detecting clinically important changes in skeletal manifestations of severe HPP in newborns, infants, and children, including during asfotase alfa treatment. © 2018 The Authors.     In vitro culture and establishment of Anthurium parvispathum

    Sterilized seed of Anthurium parvispathum were germinated and used as explant source. The decontaminated germinated seedlings were excised and placed onto a multiplication medium containing 2mgl−1 BA and 0.2mgl−1 NAA. On average a 4-fold increase in the number of shoots produced was achieved on this medium. The shoots were subsequently placed on an elongation medium containing 20mgl−1 kinetin. The shoots elongated to a length of 2.3cm. Shoot multiplication also occurred. These were then placed onto different rooting media. The optimal rooting medium contained 0.25mgl−1 IBA which produced 3.6 roots per plantlet with a 94% success rate. It took 24weeks to progress from seed to rooted plantlets ready for acclimatization. Micropropagated plants were soaked in 0.2% Benlate to reduce fungal contamination and then placed into trays containing peat, bark and soil (1:1:1) for acclimatization. The trays were kept in a mist house for 4weeks with overhead misting and bottom heat of 30°C. They were then transferred to a green house where they were watered twice a week and sprayed with Kelpak (a seaweed concentrate) at a 1:500 dilution every second week. There was only a 2% loss during acclimatization and over the subsequent three months of growth

    Output optics for laser velocimeters

    Space savings are effected in the optical output system of a laser velocimeter. The output system is comprised of pairs of optical fibers having output ends from which a beam of laser light emerges, a transfer lens for each light beam, and at least one final (LV) lens for receiving the light passing through the transfer lenses and for focussing that light at a common crossing point or area. In order to closely couple the transfer lenses to the final lens, each transfer lens is positioned relative to the final lens receiving light therefrom such that the output waist of the corresponding beam received by the final lens from the transfer lens is a virtual waist located before the transfer lens

    Structural Properties and Relative Stability of (Meta)Stable Ordered, Partially-ordered and Disordered Al-Li Alloy Phases

    We resolve issues that have plagued reliable prediction of relative phase stability for solid-solutions and compounds. Due to its commercially important phase diagram, we showcase Al-Li system because historically density-functional theory (DFT) results show large scatter and limited success in predicting the structural properties and stability of solid-solutions relative to ordered compounds. Using recent advances in an optimal basis-set representation of the topology of electronic charge density (and, hence, atomic size), we present DFT results that agree reasonably well with all known experimental data for the structural properties and formation energies of ordered, off-stoichiometric partially-ordered and disordered alloys, opening the way for reliable study in complex alloys.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, 2 Table

    F-regular semigroups

    A semigroup S is called F-regular if S is regular and if there exists a group congruence rho on S such that every rho-class contains a greatest element with respect to the natural partial order of S (see [K.S. Nambooripad, Proc. Edinburgh Math. Soc. 23 (1980) 249-260]). These semigroups were investigated in [C.C. Edwards, Semigroup Forum 19 (1980) 331-345] where a description similar to the F-inverse case (see [R. McFadden, L. O'Carroll, Proc. London Math. Soc. 22 (1971) 652-666]) is given. Further characterizations of F-regular semigroups, including an axiomatic one, are provided. The main objective is to give a new representation of such semigroups by means of Szendrei triples (see [M. Szendrei, Acta Sci. Math. 51 (1987) 229-249]). The particular case of F-regular semigroups S satisfying the identity (xy)* = y*x*, where x* epsilon S denotes the greatest element of the rho-class containing x epsilon S, is considered.     In a courtroom, it is essential that the scientific evidence is both understandable and understood, so that the strengths and limitations of that evidence, within the context of a legal case, can inform decision making. The Evidence Chamber brings together entertainment, public engagement with science and research into a public performance activity that is centred around digital storytelling and science communication. This experience engages public audiences with science and allows a better understanding of how people interpret scientific evidence. In this paper, we discuss how we created this experience as an in-person and fully virtual performance through successful collaboration between forensic science research, public audiences, public engagement professionals, the legal profession, and digital performance artists
