    Design optimization of the JPL Phase B testbed

    Increasingly complex spacecraft will benefit from integrated design and optimization of structural, optical, and control subsystems. Integrated design optimization will allow designers to make tradeoffs in objectives and constraints across these subsystems. The location, number, and types of passive and active devices distributed along the structure can have a dramatic impact on overall system performance. In addition, the manner in which structural mass is distributed can also serve as an effective mechanism for attenuating disturbance transmission between source and sensitive system components. This paper presents recent experience using optimization tools that have been developed for addressing some of these issues on a challenging testbed design problem. This particular testbed is one of a series of testbeds at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory under the sponsorship of the NASA Control Structure Interaction (CSI) Program to demonstrate nanometer level optical pathlength control on a flexible truss structure that emulates a spaceborne interferometer

    "Magnetoscan": A Modified Hall Probe Scanning Technique for the Detection of Inhomogeneities in Bulk High Temperature Superconductors

    We present a novel technique for the investigation of local variations of the critical current density in large bulk superconductors. In contrast to the usual Hall probe scanning technique, the sample is not magnetized as a whole before the scan, but locally by a small permanent magnet, which is fixed near the Hall probe, during the scanning process. The resulting signal can be interpreted as a qualitative measure of the local shielding currents flowing at the surface.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    Paracetamol versus meperidine for relief of labour pain in primiparous women: a randomized controlled trial

    Background: Most parturient women request analgesia, of which, there are two types; opioids and non-opioids. Opioids include morphine and meperidine, while non-opioids, which are milder forms of painkillers, include acetaminophen (paracetamol) and non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs. The major concerns associated with opioids are the risk of neonatal respiratory depression, the cost and availability.Methods: The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of paracetamol versus meperidine for intra-partum pain relief. A total of 92 primiparous singleton term pregnant women were randomly allocated to receive intravenous paracetamol (1000 mg), or intramuscular meperidine (50 mg), at the beginning of the active phase of labor. The primary outcome was the labor pain perception, assessed using the visual analogue scale (VAS), at baseline, 15, 30, 60 and 120 minutes after administration of the drug.Results: Women of both groups showed significant reduction of the VAS after administration of the medication. There were no differences between both groups regarding the mode of delivery and the durations of the first or second stages of labor. However, meperidine was associated with higher rates of dizziness and nausea/vomiting. The 1-min Apgar scores were significantly lower in meperidine group. However, there were no differences in the 5-min Apgar score, need for neonatal resuscitation or neonatal respiratory distress.Conclusions: intravenous paracetamol as analgesia during labor is effective with no fetal or maternal adverse effects. Its use should have more chance for intrapartum pain relief. Additionally, it can be used as adjuvant with other types of analgesics

It is therefore not surprising that graphical visualizations have been employed in search engines to assist users.     Effect of oxytocin infusion versus tranexamic acid on reducing blood loss during hysteroscopic myomectomy: a randomized controlled trial

    Background: Women undergoing hysteroscopic myomectomy are prone to significant blood loss and hematological disturbances. Oxytocin is a uterotonic drug, used mainly in obstetric practice. Tranexamic acid is a haemostatic drug that has been used to reduce blood loss after trauma and in many surgeries. The aim of our study was to compare the safety and efficacy of oxytocin versus tranexamic acid in reducing perioperative blood loss during hysteroscopic myomectomy.Methods: This study included 60 patients scheduled for hysteroscopic myomectomy allocated into 2 groups: group A: received 10 mg/kg of tranexamic acid slowly intravenous after induction of anesthesia, while group B: received infusion of 10 IU of oxytocin at a rate of 400 mIU/min throughout the procedure. Preoperative and postoperative hemoglobin and hematocrit levels, need for blood transfusion, duration of operation, complications and medications adverse effects were recorded.Results: The 2 groups were comparable in terms of the mean difference between preoperative and postoperative hemoglobin a hematocrit levels, operative time, operative complication and medications’ adverse effects. No patients needed blood component transfusion in either group.Conclusions: It can be concluded that tranexamic acid and oxytocin are equally effective in reducing blood loss and transfusion requirements during hysteroscopic myomectomy with comparable good safety profiles. Both of them can be used according to availability and surgeon preferences

    FLCC: Efficient Distributed Federated Learning on IoMT over CSMA/CA

    Federated Learning (FL) has emerged as a promising approach for privacy preservation, allowing sharing of the model parameters between users and the cloud server rather than the raw local data. FL approaches have been adopted as a cornerstone of distributed machine learning (ML) to solve several complex use cases. FL presents an interesting interplay between communication and ML performance when implemented over distributed wireless nodes. Both the dynamics of networking and learning play an important role. In this article, we investigate the performance of FL on an application that might be used to improve a remote healthcare system over ad hoc networks which employ CSMA/CA to schedule its transmissions. Our FL over CSMA/CA (FLCC) model is designed to eliminate untrusted devices and harness frequency reuse and spatial clustering techniques to improve the throughput required for coordinating a distributed implementation of FL in the wireless network. In our proposed model, frequency allocation is performed on the basis of spatial clustering performed using virtual cells. Each cell assigns a FL server and dedicated carrier frequencies to exchange the updated model's parameters within the cell. We present two metrics to evaluate the network performance: 1) probability of successful transmission while minimizing the interference, and 2) performance of distributed FL model in terms of accuracy and loss while considering the networking dynamics. We benchmark the proposed approach using a well-known MNIST dataset for performance evaluation. We demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms the baseline FL algorithms in terms of explicitly defining the chosen users' criteria and achieving high accuracy in a robust network

    Developing antibacterial peptides as a promising therapy for combating antibiotic-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections

    Background and Aim: Antibiotic-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa poses a serious health threat. This study aimed to investigate the antibacterial activity of peptide KW-23 against drug-resistant P. aeruginosa and its potential for enhancing the efficacy of conventional antibiotics. Materials and Methods: KW-23 was synthesized from nine amino acids, specifically three tryptophans and three lysines. The purity of the substance was analyzed using reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The peptide was identified through mass spectrometry using electrospray ionization. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of KW-23 in combination with conventional antibiotics against control and multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa were determined utilizing broth microdilution. The erythrocyte hemolytic assay was used to measure toxicity. The KW-23 effect was analyzed using the time-kill curve. Results: The peptide exhibited strong antibacterial activity against control and multidrug-resistant strains of P. aeruginosa, with MICs of 4.5 μg/mL and 20 μg/mL, respectively. At higher concentration of 100 μg/mL, KW-23 exhibited a low hemolytic impact, causing no more than 3% damage to red blood. The cytotoxicity assay demonstrates KW-23’s safety, while the time-kill curve highlights its rapid and sustained antibacterial activity. The combination of KW-23 and gentamicin exhibited synergistic activity against both susceptible and resistant P. aeruginosa, with fractional inhibitory concentration index values of 0.07 and 0.27, respectively. Conclusion: The KW-23 synthesized in the laboratory significantly combats antibiotic-resistant P. aeruginosa. Due to its strong antibacterial properties and low toxicity to cells, KW-23 is a promising alternative to traditional antibiotics in combating multidrug-resistant bacteria

    A pilot study on ultrashort peptide with fluconazole: A promising novel anticandidal combination

    Background and Aim: Human infections caused by Candida albicans are common and range in severity from relatively treatable skin and mucosal conditions to systemic, fatal invasive candidiasis. The treatment of fungal infections is challenged by major obstacles, including the scarcity of effective therapeutic options, the toxicity of available medications, and the escalating antifungal resistance. Hence, there exists an urgent need to develop new classes of antimicrobial agents. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of KW-23 peptide against standard and resistant strains of C. albicans alone and in combination with fluconazole. Materials and Methods: A conjugated ultrashort antimicrobial peptide (KW-23) was designed and synthesized. KW-23 was challenged against standard and multidrug-resistant C. albicans alone and in combination with fluconazole using standard antimicrobial and checkerboard assays. The toxicity of the peptide was examined using hemolytic assays. Results: KW-23 positively affected the standard and resistant Candidal strains (at 5 and 15 µg/mL respectively), exhibiting potent synergistic antimicrobial activity against the standard strain when combined with fluconazole. The effect of the combination was additive against the resistant strain (0.6 µg/mL). Furthermore, the peptide exhibited negligible toxicity on human erythrocytes. Conclusion: KW-23 and its combination with fluconazole could be a promising candidate for developing anticandidal agents

    Direct observation of substitutional Ga after ion implantation in Ge by means of extended x-ray absorption fine structure

    We present an experimental lattice location study of Ga atoms in Ge after ion implantation at elevated temperature (250°C). Using extended x-rayabsorption fine structure (EXAFS) experiments and a dedicated sample preparation method, we have studied the lattice location of Ga atoms in Ge with a concentration ranging from 0.5 at. % down to 0.005 at. %. At Ga concentrations ≤0.05 at.%, all Ga dopants are substitutional directly after ion implantation, without the need for post-implantation thermal annealing. At higher Ga concentrations, a reduction in the EXAFS amplitude is observed, indicating that a fraction of the Ga atoms is located in a defective environment. The local strain induced by the Ga atoms in the Ge matrix is independent of the Ga concentration and extends only to the first nearest neighbor Ge shell, where a 1% contraction in bond length has been measured, in agreement with density functional theory calculations.We acknowledge the support from the Research Foundation Flanders, the epi-team from imec, the KU Leuven GOA 09/06 project, the IUAP program P6/42 and the Australian Research Council.
