A Massive S-duality in 4 dimensions
We reduce the Type IIA supergravity theory with a generalized Scherk-Schwarz
ansatz that exploits the scaling symmetry of the dilaton, the metric and the NS
2-form field. The resulting theory is a new massive, gauged supergravity theory
in four dimensions with a massive 2-form field and a massive 1-form field. We
show that this theory is S-dual to a theory with a massive vector field and a
massive 2-form field, which are dual to the massive 2-form and 1-form fields in
the original theory, respectively. The S-dual theory is shown to arise from a
Scherk-Schwarz reduction of the heterotic theory. Hence we establish a massive,
S-duality type relation between the IIA theory and the heterotic theory in four
dimensions. We also show that the Lagrangian for the new four dimensional
theory can be put in the most general form of a D=4, N=4 gauged Lagrangian
found by Schon and Weidner, in which (part of) the SL(2) group has been gauged.Comment: 20 pages, references adde
Coherent control of a surface structural phase transition
Active optical control over matter is desirable in many scientific disciplines, with prominent examples in all-optical magnetic switching1,2, light-induced metastable or exotic phases of solids3,4,5,6,7,8 and the coherent control of chemical reactions9,10. Typically, these approaches dynamically steer a system towards states or reaction products far from equilibrium. In solids, metal-to-insulator transitions are an important target for optical manipulation, offering ultrafast changes of the electronic4 and lattice11,12,13,14,15,16 properties. The impact of coherences on the efficiencies and thresholds of such transitions, however, remains a largely open subject. Here, we demonstrate coherent control over a metal–insulator structural phase transition in a quasi-one-dimensional solid-state surface system. A femtosecond double-pulse excitation scheme17,18,19,20 is used to switch the system from the insulating to a metastable metallic state, and the corresponding structural changes are monitored by ultrafast low-energy electron diffraction21,22. To govern the transition, we harness vibrational coherence in key structural modes connecting both phases, and observe delay-dependent oscillations in the double-pulse switching efficiency. Mode-selective coherent control of solids and surfaces could open new routes to switching chemical and physical functionalities, enabled by metastable and non-equilibrium states
Stable quantum systems in anti-de Sitter space: Causality, independence and spectral properties
If a state is passive for uniformly accelerated observers in n-dimensional
anti-de Sitter space-time (i.e. cannot be used by them to operate a perpetuum
mobile), they will (a) register a universal value of the Unruh temperature, (b)
discover a PCT symmetry, and (c) find that observables in complementary
wedge-shaped regions necessarily commute with each other in this state. The
stability properties of such a passive state induce a "geodesic causal
structure" on AdS and concommitant locality relations. It is shown that
observables in these complementary wedge-shaped regions fulfill strong
additional independence conditions. In two-dimensional AdS these even suffice
to enable the derivation of a nontrivial, local, covariant net indexed by
bounded spacetime regions. All these results are model-independent and hold in
any theory which is compatible with a weak notion of space-time localization.
Examples are provided of models satisfying the hypotheses of these theorems.Comment: 27 pages, 1 figure: dedicated to Jacques Bros on the occasion of his

Symmetric Potentials of Gauged Supergravities in Diverse Dimensions and Coulomb Branch of Gauge Theories
A class of conformally flat and asymptotically anti-de Sitter geometries
involving profiles of scalar fields is studied from the point of view of gauged
supergravity. The scalars involved in the solutions parameterise the
SL(N,R)/SO(N) submanifold of the full scalar coset of the gauged supergravity,
and are described by a symmetric potential with a universal form. These
geometries descend via consistent truncation from distributions of D3-branes,
M2-branes, or M5-branes in ten or eleven dimensions. We exhibit analogous
solutions asymptotic to AdS_6 which descend from the D4-D8-brane system. We
obtain the related six-dimensional theory by consistent reduction from massive
type IIA supergravity. All our geometries correspond to states in the Coulomb
branch of the dual conformal field theories. We analyze linear fluctuations of
minimally coupled scalars and find both discrete and continuous spectra, but
always bounded below.Comment: Latex, 38 pages, minor correction
N=2 supergravity in five dimensions revisited
We construct matter-coupled N=2 supergravity in five dimensions, using the
superconformal approach. For the matter sector we take an arbitrary number of
vector-, tensor- and hyper-multiplets. By allowing off-diagonal vector-tensor
couplings we find more general results than currently known in the literature.
Our results provide the appropriate starting point for a systematic search for
BPS solutions, and for applications of M-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau
manifolds with fluxes.Comment: 35 pages; v.2: A sign changed in a bilinear fermion term in (5.7
Gauged diffeomorphisms and hidden symmetries in Kaluza-Klein theories
We analyze the symmetries that are realized on the massive Kaluza-Klein modes
in generic D-dimensional backgrounds with three non-compact directions. For
this we construct the unbroken phase given by the decompactification limit, in
which the higher Kaluza-Klein modes are massless. The latter admits an
infinite-dimensional extension of the three-dimensional diffeomorphism group as
local symmetry and, moreover, a current algebra associated to SL(D-2,R)
together with the diffeomorphism algebra of the internal manifold as global
symmetries. It is shown that the `broken phase' can be reconstructed by gauging
a certain subgroup of the global symmetries. This deforms the three-dimensional
diffeomorphisms to a gauged version, and it is shown that they can be governed
by a Chern-Simons theory, which unifies the spin-2 modes with the Kaluza-Klein
vectors. This provides a reformulation of D-dimensional Einstein gravity, in
which the physical degrees of freedom are described by the scalars of a gauged
non-linear sigma model based on SL(D-2,R)/SO(D-2), while the metric appears in
a purely topological Chern-Simons form.Comment: 23 pages, minor changes, v3: published versio
E{7(7)} Symmetry and Finiteness of N=8 Supergravity
We study N=8 supergravity deformed by the presence of the candidate
counterterms. We show that even though they are invariant under undeformed
E{7(7)}, all of the candidate counterterms violate the deformed E{7(7)} current
conservation. The same conclusion follows from the uniqueness of the Lorentz
and SU(8) covariant, E{7(7)} invariant unitarity constraint expressing the
56-dimensional E{7(7)} doublet via 28 independent vectors. Therefore E{7(7)}
duality predicts the all-loop UV finiteness of perturbative N=8 supergravity.Comment: 18 page
Self-Dual N=8 Supergravity as Closed N=2(4) Strings
As open N=2 or 4 strings describe self-dual N=4 super Yang-Mills in 2+2
dimensions, the corresponding closed (heterotic) strings describe self-dual
ungauged (gauged) N=8 supergravity. These theories are conveniently formulated
in a chiral superspace with general supercoordinate and local OSp(8|2) gauge
invariances. The super-light-cone and covariant-component actions are analyzed.
Because only half the Lorentz group is gauged, the gravity field equation is
just the vanishing of the torsion.Comment: 17 pg., (uuencoded dvi file; revision: forgot 1 stupid term in the

Hidden Symmetries, Central Charges and All That
In this review we discuss hidden symmetries of toroidal compactifications of
eleven-dimensional supergravity. We recall alternative versions of this theory
which exhibit traces of the hidden symmetries when still retaining the massive
Kaluza-Klein states. We reconsider them in the broader perspective of M-theory
which incorporates a more extended variety of BPS states. We also argue for a
new geometry that may underly these theories. All our arguments point towards
an extension of the number of space-time coordinates beyond eleven.Comment: 19 pages (LATEX), contribution to the G\"ursey memorial Conference
