    Modes of Growth in Dynamic Systems

    Regardless of a system's complexity or scale, its growth can be considered to be a spontaneous thermodynamic response to a local convergence of down-gradient material flows. Here it is shown how growth can be constrained to a few distinct modes that depend on the availability of material and energetic resources. These modes include a law of diminishing returns, logistic behavior and, if resources are expanding very rapidly, super-exponential growth. For a case where a system has a resolved sink as well as a source, growth and decay can be characterized in terms of a slightly modified form of the predator-prey equations commonly employed in ecology, where the perturbation formulation of these equations is equivalent to a damped simple harmonic oscillator. Thus, the framework presented here suggests a common theoretical under-pinning for emergent behaviors in the physical and life sciences.     D2ADA: Dynamic Density-aware Active Domain Adaptation for Semantic Segmentation

    In the field of domain adaptation, a trade-off exists between the model performance and the number of target domain annotations. Active learning, maximizing model performance with few informative labeled data, comes in handy for such a scenario. In this work, we present D2ADA, a general active domain adaptation framework for semantic segmentation. To adapt the model to the target domain with minimum queried labels, we propose acquiring labels of the samples with high probability density in the target domain yet with low probability density in the source domain, complementary to the existing source domain labeled data. To further facilitate labeling efficiency, we design a dynamic scheduling policy to adjust the labeling budgets between domain exploration and model uncertainty over time. Extensive experiments show that our method outperforms existing active learning and domain adaptation baselines on two benchmarks, GTA5 -> Cityscapes and SYNTHIA -> Cityscapes. With less than 5% target domain annotations, our method reaches comparable results with that of full supervision.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure

    Single frequency erbium fiber external cavity semiconductor laser

    A novel external cavity configuration for stable single frequency operation of the semiconductor laser is demonstrated. By using an erbium doped fiber as the external cavity, longitudinal mode-hopping is suppressed, ensuring single frequency operation.     Level density and gamma strength function in 162-Dy from inelastic 3-He scattering

    Complementary measurements have been performed for the level density and gamma strength function in 162-Dy using inelastic 3-He scattering. Comparing these results to previous measurements using the 163-Dy(3-He,alpha) reaction, reveals that the measured quantities above 1.5 MeV do not depend significantly on the nuclear reaction chosen.Comment: 15 pages, including 7 figure

    Dilepton Production in Nucleon-Nucleon Reactions With and Without Hadronic Inelasticities

    We calculate elementary proton-proton and neutron-proton bremsstrahlung and their contribution to the e+e−e^+e^- invariant mass distribution. At 4.9 GeV, the proton-proton contribution is larger than neutron-proton, but it is small compared to recent data. We then make a first calculation of bremsstrahlung in nucleon-nucleon reactions with multi-hadron final states. Again at 4.9 GeV, the many-body bremsstrahlung is larger than simple nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung by more than an order of magnitude in the low-mass region. When the bremsstrahlung contributions are summed with Dalitz decay of the η\eta, radiative decay of the Δ\Delta and from two-pion annihilation, the result matches recent high statistics proton-proton data from the Dilepton Spectrometer collaboration.Comment: 1+17 pages plus 11 PostScript figures uuencoded and appended, McGill/93-9, TPI-MINN-93/18-

    Institutional pedagogical waypoints : reflections on doctoral journeys between Taiwan and Australia

    Spatial, social and academic journeys undertaken between Taiwan and Australia for doctoral education are the focus of reflection here. The discussion centres on the authors’ experiences of, on the one hand, the development of a Faculty of Education’s doctoral pedagogies in the early 2000s to reflect its international PhD candidature profile – especially from Taiwan – and, on the other, of Taiwanese doctoral candidates’ journeys through their PhDs in the Faculty. The authors write from their particular perspectives: Evans as an Australian academic and a manager of doctoral studies, and Liou as a Taiwanese academic pursuing her doctorate in an Australian university. The article considers the Australian and Taiwanese doctoral contexts between which the students transited. The institutional pedagogical strategies, from pre-enrolment to completion, are examined as waypoints on the doctoral journey for both staff and candidates

    Evaluation of hygroscopic cloud seeding in warm-rain processes by a hybrid microphysics scheme using a Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model: a real case study

    To evaluate the hygroscopic cloud seeding in reality, this study develops a hybrid microphysics scheme using a Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, WDM6-NCU (WDM6 modified by National Central University), which involves 43 bins of seeded cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) in the WDM6 bulk method scheme. This scheme can describe the size distribution of seeded CCN and explain the process of the CCN imbedding and cloud and raindrop formation in detail. Furthermore, based on the observational CCN size distribution applied in the modelling, a series of tests on cloud seeding were conducted during the seeding periods of 21–22 October 2020 with stratocumulus clouds. The model simulation results reveal that seeding in in-cloud regions with an appropriate CCN size distribution can yield greater rainfall and that spreading the seeding agents over an area of 40–60 km2 is the most efficient strategy to create a sufficient precipitation rate. With regard to the microphysical processes, the main process that causes the enhancement of precipitation is the strengthening of the accretion process of raindrops. In addition, hygroscopic particles larger than 0.4 µm primarily contribute to cloud-seeding effects. The study results could be used as references for model development and warm-cloud-seeding operations.</p

    Prostaglandin E<inf>2</inf> (PGE<inf>2</inf>) exerts biphasic effects on human tendon stem cells

    Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) has been reported to exert different effects on tissues at low and high levels. In the present study, cell culture experiments were performed to determine the potential biphasic effects of PGE2 on human tendon stem/progenitor cells (hTSCs). After treatment with PGE2, hTSC proliferation, stemness, and differentiation were analyzed. We found that high concentrations of PGE 2 ( >1 ng/ml) decreased cell proliferation and induced non-tenocyte differentiation. However, at lower concentrations (1 ng/ml. The findings of this study reveal that PGE2 can exhibit biphasic effects on hTSCs, indicating that while high PGE2 concentrations may be detrimental to tendons, low levels of PGE2 may play a vital role in the maintenance of tendon homeostasis in vivo. © 2014 Zhang, Wang
