Measurement of the branching ratio for beta-delayed alpha decay of 16N

While the 12C(a,g)16O reaction plays a central role in nuclear astrophysics, the cross section at energies relevant to hydrostatic helium burning is too small to be directly measured in the laboratory. The beta-delayed alpha spectrum of 16N can be used to constrain the extrapolation of the E1 component of the S-factor; however, with this approach the resulting S-factor becomes strongly correlated with the assumed beta-alpha branching ratio. We have remeasured the beta-alpha branching ratio by implanting 16N ions in a segmented Si detector and counting the number of beta-alpha decays relative to the number of implantations. Our result, 1.49(5)e-5, represents a 24% increase compared to the accepted value and implies an increase of 14% in the extrapolated S-factor

Thyroidal and Extrathyroidal Requirements for Iodine and Selenium:A Combined Evolutionary and (Patho)Physiological Approach

Iodide is an antioxidant, oxidant and thyroid hormone constituent. Selenoproteins are needed for triiodothyronine synthesis, its deactivation and iodine release. They also protect thyroidal and extrathyroidal tissues from hydrogen peroxide used in the ‘peroxidase partner system’. This system produces thyroid hormone and reactive iodine in exocrine glands to kill microbes. Exocrine glands recycle iodine and with high urinary clearance require constant dietary supply, unlike the thyroid. Disbalanced iodine-selenium explains relations between thyroid autoimmune disease (TAD) and cancer of thyroid and exocrine organs, notably stomach, breast, and prostate. Seafood is iodine unconstrained, but selenium constrained. Terrestrial food contains little iodine while selenium ranges from highly deficient to highly toxic. Iodine vs. TAD is U-shaped, but only low selenium relates to TAD. Oxidative stress from low selenium, and infection from disbalanced iodine-selenium, may generate cancer of thyroid and exocrine glands. Traditional Japanese diet resembles our ancient seashore-based diet and relates to aforementioned diseases. Adequate iodine might be in the milligram range but is toxic at low selenium. Optimal selenoprotein-P at 105 ”g selenium/day agrees with Japanese intakes. Selenium upper limit may remain at 300–400 ”g/day. Seafood combines iodine, selenium and other critical nutrients. It brings us back to the seashore diet that made us what we currently still are

First Test of Lorentz Invariance in the Weak Decay of Polarized Nuclei

A new test of Lorentz invariance in the weak interactions has been made by searching for variations in the decay rate of spin-polarized 20Na nuclei. This test is unique to Gamow-Teller transitions, as was shown in the framework of a recently developed theory that assumes a Lorentz symmetry breaking background field of tensor nature. The nuclear spins were polarized in the up and down direction, putting a limit on the amplitude of sidereal variations of the form |(\Gamma_{up} - \Gamma_{down})| / (\Gamma_{up} + \Gamma_{down}) < 3 * 10^{-3}. This measurement shows a possible route toward a more detailed testing of Lorentz symmetry in weak interactions.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure

Technologies of memory: practices of remembering in analogue and digital photography

This article demonstrates the need always to consider change against continuity and continuity against change in the analysis of mnemonic technologies. It does so by exploring what has happened in the move from analogue to digital photography, looking in particular at how this has affected the meanings of personal photographs and the practices of remembering associated with them. In contrast with technologically determinist perspectives which have been, however latently, manifest in writing on new media, the value of exploring vernacular photography as a specifically mnemonic practice is that it turns our attention to the ways in which photographic practices are bound up with longer-term social uses and cultural values. Our analysis focuses on changes in four key categories of photographic practice that relate to the analogue/digital shift: photo-taking; photo-storing; photo-viewing; photo-sharing – all of which have consequences for the uses of photography as a mnemonic resource. They have all been altered in varying degrees by the advent of digital technologies, but with people continually making comparative evaluations of old and new, drawing on the former as a key aspect of learning how to use the latter

    27. New echocardiogram index alternatives to MAPSE and TAPSE z-scores in children

BackgroundMitral annular plane systolic excursion (MAPSE), and tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) are relatively load independent longitudinal left ventricle (LV) and right ventricle (RV) measurement in both adults and children. Normal paediatric values of MAPSE and TAPSE unlike adults are based on inconvenient z-scores. We hypothesize novel indexes of (LSI) LV longitudinal systolic index and (RSI) RV longitudinal systolic index are BSA, age, gender independent and nullifies the need for MAPSE and TAPSE z-scores.MethodsNormal echocardiograms were retrospectively reviewed from 2009 to 2011. Ejection fraction, LV dimensions, MAPSE, and TAPSE were determined. LSI and RSI were calculated using MAPSE and TAPSE divided by LV length. Echocardiogram indices were correlated. Regression analysis was done for BSA, age, and gender.ResultsTwo hundred and one patients had normal ejection fractions (67.3;±5.1%). Mean MAPSE 10.4;±3.3mm, z-score −0.07;±1.2, and LSI 0.20;±0.03; Mean TAPSE 17.4;±5.4mm, z-score 0.74;±1.7, and RSI 0.34;±0.06. LSI and MAPSE z-scores correlated, r=0.73, p<0.001. Age, gender, and BSA did not correlate with LSI. RSI and TAPSE z-scores correlated with r=0.76, p<0.001. Age influences RSI, R2=0.58, p value <0.001, BSA and gender does not. RSI, with age stratification, is significantly decreased less than 2months.ConclusionLSI obviates need for-MAPSE z scores. RSI offers an additional non TAPSE z-score method to evaluate RV function, but does not nullify age effect. RSI, especially in the first two months is decreased
