Dynamic nonlinear analyses for the 4-storey infilled R/C frame: study of a retrofitting solution
A research project on assessment and retrofitting of R/C frame structures is currently being developed under the research programme of the ICONS TMR-research network. This paper presents and discusses the preliminary experimental results from a 4-storey bare frame representative of the common practice of 40~50 years ago in most south European countries and devotes special attention to the study of a retrofitting solution based on bracing and rubber dissipaters, which intends to increase stiffness and damping reducing consequently the earthquake deformation demands.O estudo aqui apresentado concentra-se numa solução de reforço de um pórtico utilizando contraventamentos (k-bracing) com perfis de aço em conjunto com elementos elastoméricos de dissipação. Os resultados das análises não lineares da estrutura com e sem alvenaria e com reforço são apresentados e discutidos. Na segunda parte da comunicação apresentam-se os resultados experimentais já disponíveis e discute-se o problema da modelação recorrendo aos resultados experimentais e comparando os resultados obtidos com diferentes tipos de modelos

Homogeneous abundance analysis of dwarf, subgiant and giant FGK stars with and without giant planets
We have analyzed high-resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio optical
spectra of nearby FGK stars with and without detected giant planets in order to
homogeneously measure their photospheric parameters, mass, age, and the
abundances of volatile (C, N, and O) and refractory (Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, V, Mn,
Fe, Ni, Cu, and Ba) elements. Our sample contains 309 stars from the solar
neighborhood (up to the distance of 100 pc), out of which 140 are dwarfs, 29
are subgiants, and 140 are giants. The photospheric parameters are derived from
the equivalent widths of Fe I and Fe II lines. Masses and ages come from the
interpolation in evolutionary tracks and isochrones on the HR diagram. The
abundance determination is based on the equivalent widths of selected atomic
lines of the refractory elements and on the spectral synthesis of C_2, CN, C I,
O I, and Na I features. We apply a set of statistical methods to analyze the
abundances derived for the three subsamples. Our results show that: i) giant
stars systematically exhibit underabundance in [C/Fe] and overabundance in
[N/Fe] and [Na/Fe] in comparison with dwarfs, a result that is normally
attributed to evolution-induced mixing processes in the envelope of evolved
stars; ii) for solar analogs only, the abundance trends with the condensation
temperature of the elements are correlated with age and anticorrelated with the
surface gravity, which is in agreement with recent studies; iii) as in the case
of [Fe/H], dwarf stars with giant planets are systematically enriched in [X/H]
for all the analyzed elements, except for O and Ba (the former due to
limitations of statistics), confirming previous findings in the literature that
not only iron has an important relation with the planetary formation; and iv)
giant planet hosts are also significantly overabundant for the same metallicity
when the elements from Mg to Cu are combined together.Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, 8 table
A 'p-n' diode with hole and electron-doped lanthanum manganite
The hole-doped manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 and the electron-doped manganite
La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 undergo an insulator to metal transition at around 250 K, above
which both behave as a polaronic semiconductor. We have successfully fabricated
an epitaxial trilayer (La0.7Ca0.3MnO3/SrTiO3/La0.7Ce0.3MnO3), where SrTiO3 is
an insulator. At room temperature, i.e. in the semiconducting regime, it
exhibits asymmetric current-voltage (I-V) characteristics akin to a p-n diode.
The observed asymmetry in the I-V characteristics disappears at low
temperatures where both the manganite layers are metallic. To the best of our
knowledge, this is the first report of such a p-n diode, using the polaronic

High-fidelity simulations of the lobe-and-cleft structures and the deposition map in particle-driven gravity currents
HST Survey of Clusters in Nearby Galaxies. II. Statistical Analysis of Cluster Populations
We present a statistical system that can be used in the study of cluster
populations. The basis of our approach is the construction of synthetic cluster
color-magnitude-radius diagrams (CMRDs), which we compare with the observed
data using a maximum likelihood calculation. This approach permits a relatively
easy incorporation of incompleteness (a function of not only magnitude and
color, but also radius), photometry errors and biases, and a variety of other
complex effects into the calculation, instead of the more common procedure of
attempting to correct for those effects.
We then apply this procedure to our NGC 3627 data from Paper I. We find that
we are able to successfully model the observed CMRD and constrain a number of
parameters of the cluster population. We measure a power law mass function
slope of alpha = -1.50 +/- 0.07, and a distribution of core radii centered at
r_c = 1.53 +/- 0.15 pc. Although the extinction distribution is less
constrained, we measured a value for the mean extinction consistent with that

The mismatch repair system protects against intergenerational GAA repeat instability in a Friedreich ataxia mouse model

The article can be accessed from the link below.This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.Friedreich ataxia (FRDA) is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder caused by a dynamic GAA repeat expansion mutation within intron 1 of the FXN gene. Studies of mouse models for other trinucleotide repeat (TNR) disorders have revealed an important role of mismatch repair (MMR) proteins in TNR instability. To explore the potential role of MMR proteins on intergenerational GAA repeat instability in FRDA, we have analyzed the transmission of unstable GAA repeat expansions from FXN transgenic mice which have been crossed with mice that are deficient for Msh2, Msh3, Msh6 or Pms2. We find in all cases that absence of parental MMR protein not only maintains transmission of GAA expansions and contractions, but also increases GAA repeat mutability (expansions and/or contractions) in the offspring. This indicates that Msh2, Msh3, Msh6 and Pms2 proteins are not the cause of intergenerational GAA expansions or contractions, but act in their canonical MMR capacity to protect against GAA repeat instability. We further identified differential modes of action for the four MMR proteins. Thus, Msh2 and Msh3 protect against GAA repeat contractions, while Msh6 protects against both GAA repeat expansions and contractions, and Pms2 protects against GAA repeat expansions and also promotes contractions. Furthermore, we detected enhanced occupancy of Msh2 and Msh3 proteins downstream of the FXN expanded GAA repeat, suggesting a model in which Msh2/3 dimers are recruited to this region to repair mismatches that would otherwise produce intergenerational GAA contractions. These findings reveal substantial differences in the intergenerational dynamics of expanded GAA repeat sequences compared with expanded CAG/CTG repeats, where Msh2 and Msh3 are thought to actively promote repeat expansions.This study is funded under European Union Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement number 242193/EFACTS.
