DSK1, a novel kinesin-related protein from the diatom Cylindrotheca fusiformis that is involved in anaphase spindle elongation.
We have identified an 80-kD protein that is involved in mitotic spindle elongation in the diatom Cylindrotheca fusiformis. DSK1 (Diatom Spindle Kinesin 1) was isolated using a peptide antibody raised against a conserved region in the motor domain of the kinesin superfamily. By sequence homology, DSK1 belongs to the central motor family of kinesin-related proteins. Immunoblots using an antibody raised against a non-conserved region of DSK1 show that DSK1 is greatly enriched in mitotic spindle preparations. Anti-DSK1 stains in diatom central spindle with a bias toward the midzone, and staining is retained in the spindle midzone during spindle elongation in vitro. Furthermore, preincubation with anti-DSK1 blocks function in an in vitro spindle elongation assay. This inhibition of spindle elongation can be rescued by preincubating concurrently with the fusion protein against which anti-DSK1 was raised. We conclude that DSK1 is involved in spindle elongation and is likely to be responsible for pushing hal-spindles apart in the spindle midzone
Numerical investigation of black hole interiors
Gravitational perturbations which are present in any realistic stellar
collapse to a black hole, die off in the exterior of the hole, but experience
an infinite blueshift in the interior. This is believed to lead to a slowly
contracting lightlike scalar curvature singularity, characterized by a
divergence of the hole's (quasi-local) mass function along the inner horizon.
The region near the inner horizon is described to great accuracy by a plane
wave spacetime. While Einstein's equations for this metric are still too
complicated to be solved in closed form it is relatively simple to integrate
them numerically.
We find for generic regular initial data the predicted mass inflation type
null singularity, rather than a spacelike singularity. It thus seems that mass
inflation indeed represents a generic self-consistent picture of the black hole
interior.Comment: 6 pages LaTeX, 3 eps figure
Numerical simulation of the massive scalar field evolution in the Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m black hole background
We studied the massive scalar wave propagation in the background of
Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m black hole by using numerical simulations. We learned
that the value plays an important role in determining the properties of
the relaxation of the perturbation. For the relaxation process
depends only on the field parameter and does not depend on the spacetime
parameters. For , the dependence of the relaxation on the black hole
parameters appears. The bigger mass of the black hole, the faster the
perturbation decays. The difference of the relaxation process caused by the
black hole charge has also been exhibited.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Self-Similar Collapse of Scalar Field in Higher Dimensions
This paper constructs continuously self-similar solution of a spherically
symmetric gravitational collapse of a scalar field in n dimensions. The
qualitative behavior of these solutions is explained, and closed-form answers
are provided where possible. Equivalence of scalar field couplings is used to
show a way to generalize minimally coupled scalar field solutions to the model
with general coupling.Comment: RevTex 3.1, 15 pages, 3 figures; references adde
Are HIV smartphone apps and online interventions fit for purpose?
Sexual health is an under-explored area of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), particularly sexually transmitted infections such as HIV. Due to the stigma associated with these infections, people are often motivated to seek information online. With the rise of smartphone and web apps, there is enormous potential for technology to provide easily accessible information and resources. However, using online information raises important concerns about the trustworthiness of these resources and whether they are fit for purpose. We conducted a review of smartphone and web apps to investigate the landscape of currently available online apps and whether they meet the diverse needs of people seeking information on HIV online. Our functionality review revealed that existing technology interventions have a one-size-fits-all approach and do not support the breadth and complexity of HIV-related support needs. We argue that technology-based interventions need to signpost their offering and provide tailored support for different stages of HIV, including prevention, testing, diagnosis and management
Matching of the continuous gravitational wave in an all sky search
We investigate the matching of continuous gravitational wave (CGW) signals in
an all sky search with reference to Earth based laser interferometric
detectors. We consider the source location as the parameters of the signal
manifold and templates corresponding to different source locations. It has been
found that the matching of signals from locations in the sky that differ in
their co-latitude and longitude by radians decreases with source
frequency. We have also made an analysis with the other parameters affecting
the symmetries. We observe that it may not be relevant to take care of the
symmetries in the sky locations for the search of CGW from the output of
LIGO-I, GEO600 and TAMA detectors.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, 3 Tables, To appear in Int. J. Mod. Phys.
Incorporating information from source simulations into searches for gravitational-wave bursts
The detection of gravitational waves from astrophysical sources of
gravitational waves is a realistic goal for the current generation of
interferometric gravitational-wave detectors. Short duration bursts of
gravitational waves from core-collapse supernovae or mergers of binary black
holes may bring a wealth of astronomical and astrophysical information. The
weakness of the waves and the rarity of the events urges the development of
optimal methods to detect the waves. The waves from these sources are not
generally known well enough to use matched filtering however; this drives the
need to develop new ways to exploit source simulation information in both
detections and information extraction. We present an algorithmic approach to
using catalogs of gravitational-wave signals developed through numerical
simulation, or otherwise, to enhance our ability to detect these waves. As more
detailed simulations become available, it is straightforward to incorporate the
new information into the search method. This approach may also be useful when
trying to extract information from a gravitational-wave observation by allowing
direct comparison between the observation and simulations.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figur
Stability criterion for self-similar solutions with a scalar field and those with a stiff fluid in general relativity
A stability criterion is derived in general relativity for self-similar
solutions with a scalar field and those with a stiff fluid, which is a perfect
fluid with the equation of state . A wide class of self-similar
solutions turn out to be unstable against kink mode perturbation. According to
the criterion, the Evans-Coleman stiff-fluid solution is unstable and cannot be
a critical solution for the spherical collapse of a stiff fluid if we allow
sufficiently small discontinuity in the density gradient field in the initial
data sets. The self-similar scalar-field solution, which was recently found
numerically by Brady {\it et al.} (2002 {\it Class. Quantum. Grav.} {\bf 19}
6359), is also unstable. Both the flat Friedmann universe with a scalar field
and that with a stiff fluid suffer from kink instability at the particle
horizon scale.Comment: 15 pages, accepted for publication in Classical and Quantum Gravity,

Quasi-normal modes of Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes
The low-laying frequencies of characteristic quasi-normal modes (QNM) of
Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) black holes have been calculated for fields of
different spin using the 6th-order WKB approximation and the approximation by
the P\"{o}shl-Teller potential. The well-known asymptotic formula for large
is generalized here on a case of the Schwarzchild-de Sitter black hole. In the
limit of the near extreme term the results given by both methods are
in a very good agreement, and in this limit fields of different spin decay with
the same rate.Comment: 9 pages, 1 ancillary Mathematica(R) noteboo
