The sweet smell of success: Enhancing multimedia applications with olfaction

As far as computerized smell is concerned, there are several difficulties to overcome, particularly those associated with the ambient nature of smell. In this article, we present results from an empirical study exploring users' perception of olfaction-enhanced multimedia displays. Findings show that olfaction significantly adds to the user multimedia experience. Moreover, use of olfaction leads to an increased sense of reality and relevance. Our results also show that users are tolerant of the interference and distortion effects caused by olfactory effect in multimedia
Normal-Metal Aharonov-Bohm Effect in the Presence of a Transverse Electric Field
The effects of transverse electric fields on the conductance fluctuations in an Sb loop have been studied. We show that the electric field can be used to tune the position (or phase) of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations as well as to alter the aperiodic conductance fluctuation patterns. We disucss two mechanisms which might cause the observed dependence of the fluctuation pattern on transverse electric field. The first is the electrostatic Aharonov-Bohm effect, and the second is the spatial shifting of the electron trajectories by the electric field
User quality of experience of mulsemedia applications
User Quality of Experience (QoE) is of fundamental importance in multimedia applications and has been extensively studied for decades. However, user QoE in the context of the emerging multiple-sensorial media (mulsemedia) services, which involve different media components than the traditional multimedia applications, have not been comprehensively studied. This article presents the results of subjective tests which have investigated user perception of mulsemedia content. In particular, the impact of intensity of certain mulsemedia components including haptic and airflow on user-perceived experience are studied. Results demonstrate that by making use of mulsemedia the overall user enjoyment levels increased by up to 77%
Universal scaling of nonlocal and local resistance fluctuations in small wires
Resistance fluctuations in small metal samples result from coherent transport of the carriers. The wave functions of the carriers extend into regions which are not accessible classically. We have directly measured the length dependence of the nonlocal magnetoresistance fluctuations in Sb and Au wires by studying regions of our samples separated from the classical current path by a distance L which varied from 3Lcphi down to 0.2Lcphi (where Lcphi is the phase coherence length for the carriers in the metal). These fluctuations decay exponentially with L/Lcphi. Measurements along the classical current paths scale more slowly with L/Lcphi than predicted by the analytical theory but are in agreement with numerical simulations. We have also studied the length dependence of the magnetic field correlation scale BC, and we find that it is in qualitative agreement with a recent model calculation that accounts for the voltage probes
Adaptive Dispersion Compensation for Remote Fiber Delivery of NIR Femtosecond Pulses
We report on remote delivery of 25 pJ broadband near-infrared femtosecond
light pulses from a Ti:sapphire laser through 150 meters of single-mode optical
fiber. Pulse distortion due to dispersion is overcome with pre-compensation
using adaptive pulse shaping techniques, while nonlinearities are mitigated
using an SF10 rod for the final stage of pulse compression. Near transform
limited pulse duration of 130 fs is measured after the final compression.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure
Studies of h/e Aharonov-Bohm Photovoltaic Oscillations in Mesoscopic Au Rings
We have investigated a mesoscopic photovoltaic (PV) effect in micron-size Au
rings in which a dc voltage Vdc is generated in response to microwave
radiation. The effect is due to the lack of inversion symmetry in a disordered
system. Aharonov-Bohm PV oscillations with flux period h/e have been observed
at low microwave intensities for temperatures ranging from 1.4 to 13 K. For
moderate microwave intensities the h/e PV oscillations are completely quenched
providing evidence that the microwaves act to randomize the phase of the
electrons. Studies of the temperature dependence of Vdc also provide evidence
of the dephasing nature of the microwave field. A complete theoretical
explanation of the observed behavior seems to require a theory for the PV

The Least-core and Nucleolus of Path Cooperative Games
Cooperative games provide an appropriate framework for fair and stable profit
distribution in multiagent systems. In this paper, we study the algorithmic
issues on path cooperative games that arise from the situations where some
commodity flows through a network. In these games, a coalition of edges or
vertices is successful if it enables a path from the source to the sink in the
network, and lose otherwise. Based on dual theory of linear programming and the
relationship with flow games, we provide the characterizations on the CS-core,
least-core and nucleolus of path cooperative games. Furthermore, we show that
the least-core and nucleolus are polynomially solvable for path cooperative
games defined on both directed and undirected network
The Hyaluronan Receptor for Endocytosis (HARE) Activates NF-κB-mediated Gene Expression in Response to 40–400-kDa, but Not Smaller or Larger, Hyaluronans
Background: HARE mediates systemic clearance of hyaluronan (HA), which turns over continuously in tissues.
Results: HARE uptake of 40–400-kDa, but not larger or smaller, HA stimulated NF-κB activation.
Conclusion: HA-HARE signal complexes activate NF-κB and gene transcription only with optimally sized HA.
Significance: HARE responsiveness to a narrow size range ofHAdegradation products may be a sensing system to detect tissue ECM stress
