Number of adaptive steps to a local fitness peak
We consider a population of genotype sequences evolving on a rugged fitness
landscape with many local fitness peaks. The population walks uphill until it
encounters a local fitness maximum. We find that the statistical properties of
the walk length depend on whether the underlying fitness distribution has a
finite mean. If the mean is finite, all the walk length cumulants grow with the
sequence length but approach a constant otherwise. Experimental implications of
our analytical results are also discussed
On the role of vortex stretching in energy optimal growth of three dimensional perturbations on plane parallel shear flows
The three dimensional optimal energy growth mechanism, in plane parallel
shear flows, is reexamined in terms of the role of vortex stretching and the
interplay between the span-wise vorticity and the planar divergent components.
For high Reynolds numbers the structure of the optimal perturbations in
Couette, Poiseuille, and mixing layer shear profiles is robust and resembles
localized plane-waves in regions where the background shear is large. The waves
are tilted with the shear when the span-wise vorticity and the planar
divergence fields are in (out of) phase when the background shear is positive
(negative). A minimal model is derived to explain how this configuration
enables simultaneous growth of the two fields, and how this mutual
amplification reflects on the optimal energy growth. This perspective provides
an understanding of the three dimensional growth solely from the two
dimensional dynamics on the shear plane
Searching for t-bar t Resonances at the Large Hadron Collider
Many new physics models predict resonances with masses in the TeV range which
decay into a pair of top quarks. With its large cross section, t-bar t
production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) offers an excellent opportunity
to search for such particles. We present a detailed study of the discovery
potential of the CERN Large Hadron Collider for Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations
of the gluon in bulk Randall-Sundrum (RS) models in the t-bar t -> ell^+/- nu
b-bar bq-bar q' (ell=e, mu) final state. We utilize final states with one or
two tagged b-quarks, and two, three or four jets (including b-jets). Our
calculations take into account the finite resolution of detectors, the energy
loss due to b-quark decays, the expected reduced b-tagging efficiency at large
t-bar t invariant masses, and include the background originating from Wb-bar
b+jets, (Wb+W-bar b)+jets, W+jets, and single top + jets production. We derive
semi-realistic 5 sigma discovery limits for nine different KK gluon scenarios,
and compare them with those for KK gravitons, and a Z_H boson in the Littlest
Higgs model. We also analyze the capabilities of the LHC experiments to
differentiate between individual KK gluon models and measure the couplings of
KK gluons to quarks. We find that, for the parameters and models chosen, KK
gluons with masses up to about 4 TeV can be discovered at the LHC. The ability
of the LHC to discriminate between different bulk RS models, and to measure the
couplings of the KK gluons is found to be highly model dependent.Comment: revtex3, 27 pages, 5 tables, 6 figure
River Leith fluvial aufit. Final project report
This is the River Leith fluvial audit: Final project report produced by Lancaster University in 1998. Freeze cores extracted from the upper and lower ends of River Leith illustrate that the bed is highly compacted in the downstream reach. Fine material is locally derived from bedrock at depths of only 32 cms into the bed and in one core fine material is 66% of the extracted core. Levels of fines that are believed to be detrimental to fish are put at 20 to 30%. Reduced flow and stream power from water abstraction may lead to a greater infiltration of fine material if gravels are not regularly flushed through with flood flows. Infiltration of fine material can lead to river bed compaction and concretion. A small abstraction may have no effect on the morphology of a river if the reduced discharge is within the normal range of flows experienced. However if the impact on flows is small it is still possible that fine sediment problems will develop progressively and the effects may not be noticed for several years
Structure of the neutron-rich N=7 isotones 10Li and 9He
The near threshold structure of the unbound N=7 isotones 10Li and 9He has
been investigated using proton removal and breakup from intermediate energy (35
MeV/nucleon) secondary beams of 11Be and 14,15B. The coincident detection of
the beam velocity 9Li and 8He fragments and neutrons permitted the relative
energy of the in-flight decay of 10Li and 9He to be reconstructed. Both systems
were found to exhibited virtual s-wave strength near threshold together with a
higher-lying resonance.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, Contribution to INPC2010 - "International Nuclear
