    New analyticity constraints on the high energy behavior of hadron-hadron cross sections

    We here comment on a series of recent papers by Igi and Ishida[K. Igi and M. Ishida, Phys. Lett B 622, 286 (2005)] and Block and Halzen[M. M. Block and F. Halzen, Phys. Rev D 72, 036006 (2005)] that fit high energy pppp and pˉp\bar pp cross section and ρ\rho-value data, where ρ\rho is the ratio of the real to the imaginary portion of the forward scattering amplitude. These authors used Finite Energy Sum Rules and analyticity consistency conditions, respectively, to constrain the asymptotic behavior of hadron cross sections by anchoring their high energy asymptotic amplitudes--even under crossing--to low energy experimental data. Using analyticity, we here show that i) the two apparently very different approaches are in fact equivalent, ii) that these analyticity constraints can be extended to give new constraints, and iii) that these constraints can be extended to crossing odd amplitudes. We also apply these extensions to photoproduction.     Bars do drive spiral density waves

    Recently, Buta etal. (2009) examined the question "Do Bars Drive Spiral Density Waves?", an idea supported by theoretical studies and also from a preliminary observational analysis Block etal (2004). They estimated maximum bar strengths Q_b, maximum spiral strengths Q_s, and maximum m=2 arm contrasts A_2s for 23 galaxies with deep AAT K_s-band images. These were combined with previously published Q_b and Q_s values for 147 galaxies from the OSUBSGS sample and with the 12 galaxies from Block etal(2004). Weak correlation between Q_b and Q_s was confirmed for the combined sample, whereas the AAT subset alone showed no significant correlations between Q_b and Q_s, nor between Q_b and A_2s. A similar negative result was obtained in Durbala etal. (2009) for 46 galaxies. Based on these studies, the answer to the above question remains uncertain. Here we use a novel approach, and show that although the correlation between the maximum bar and spiral parameters is weak, these parameters do correlate when compared locally. For the OSUBSGS sample a statistically significant correlation is found between the local spiral amplitude, and the forcing due to the bar's potential at the same distance, out to 1.6 bar radii (the typical bar perturbation is then of the order of a few percent). Also for the sample of 23 AAT galaxies we find a significant correlation between local parameters out to 1.4 bar radii. Our new results confirm that, at least in a statistical sense, bars do indeed drive spiral density waves.Comment: Accepted to ApJ

    Financial systems, innovation and economic performance

    There is growing evidence of international divergence in the performance of newindustries. While the United States is at the forefront of the recent revolution ininformation technologies, European economists and policy makers are concerned thatEurope is falling behind with negative implications for long-term economicperformance. This paper investigates the role of financial systems as a crucialdeterminant of apparent differences in national abilities to promote innovativeactivities in specific sectors. Firstly, a short overview of the relevant finance andinnovation literature is provided, and a synthetic view of the finance-innovation linkis sketched. It is argued that national financial systems have an impact on thestructure of growth through their differing abilities to promote innovation in sector-specifictechnology regimes. Secondly, I apply a simple econometric model to a dataset consisting of 17 OECD countries and 20 manufacturing industries to identifyempirical patterns. The evidence suggests that sectors characterized by hightechnological opportunity and a focus on product innovation perform relatively betterin financial systems with large stock markets, competitive banking sectors and goodaccounting standards. In contrast, the performance of sectors geared towardsinnovation in processes benefits from a more bank-oriented financial system andconcentrated ownership structures.economics of technology ;

    Modeling Building Block Interdependency

    The Building-Block Hypothesis appeals to the notion of problem decomposition and the assembly of solutions from sub-solutions. Accordingly, there have been many varieties of GA test problems with a structure based on building-blocks. Many of these problems use deceptive fitness functions to model interdependency between the bits within a block. However, very few have any model of interdependency between building-blocks; those that do are not consistent in the type of interaction used intra-block and inter-block. This paper discusses the inadequacies of the various test problems in the literature and clarifies the concept of building-block interdependency. We formulate a principled model of hierarchical interdependency that can be applied through many levels in a consistent manner and introduce Hierarchical If-and-only-if (H-IFF) as a canonical example. We present some empirical results of GAs on H-IFF showing that if population diversity is maintained and linkage is tight then the GA is able to identify and manipulate building-blocks over many levels of assembly, as the Building-Block Hypothesis suggests

    Abstract Congreso XXXVII National Meeting of the Spanish Society of Pharmacology with guest society: The British Pharmacological SocietyBackground and Aims: Total knee arthroplasty injuries are extremely painful and merit prompt attention to adequate postoperative analgesia. We aim to compare femoral and sciatic ultrasound-guided combined nerve block vs. neurostimulation for femoral and sciatic combined nerve block or for femoral nerve block in postoperative pain in primary elective total knee prosthesis. Summary of work and outcomes: A three arms, prospective longitudinal study of patients having primary elective unilateral knee prosthesis and randomly assigned to catheter insertion guided by ultrasound or neurostimulation was done: 1) Ultrasound-guided femoral and sciatic combined nerve block (USFSCN) (N=15); 2) Neurostimulation for femoral and sciatic combined nerve block (NSFSCN) (N=17); 3) Neurostimulation for femoral nerve block (NSFN) (N=11). Total analgesia (morphine) consumption after 48 hours was the primary endpoint. The postoperative pain intensity (visual analogue pain scale (VAS)) at post-anaesthetic recovery unit (PARU), 6, 24, 48 h, and during movement and postoperative complications were secondary outcomes. Results and discussion: 43 patients (68.3±8 years old, 77% female) subjected to elective unilateral knee prosthesis were enrolled. There were no differences in the demographic, anaesthetic and surgical variables between groups. Pain intensity was lower in the USFSCN group compared with NSFSCN and NSFN during the first 48 h post-surgery (% of intense pain at PARU/6h/24h/48h): USFSCN 0.8/1.4/3.2/1.6; NSFSCN 5.6/8.3/7.5/3; NSFN 7.2/5.3/6.4/5.4. The average consumption of morphine within 48 h after surgery was similar in the groups USFSCN and NSFSCN (3 mg vs. 3.11 mg), and significantly lower than NSFN (4.19 mg) (p<0.05). And the number of complications was significantly lower in the USFSCN group compared with NSFSCN and NSFN during the first 48 h of postoperative. Conclusion: Ultrasound-guided femoral and sciatic combined nerve block presented better analgesia and was more safety than neurostimulation for femoral and sciatic combined nerve block or for femoral nerve block in primary elective total knee arthroplasty.Universidad de Målaga.     A randomised, controlled, double blind, non-inferiority trial of ultrasound-guided fascia iliaca block vs. spinal morphine for analgesia after primary hip arthroplasty

    We performed a single centre, double blind, randomised, controlled, non-inferiority study comparing ultrasound-guided fascia iliaca block with spinal morphine for the primary outcome of 24-h postoperative morphine consumption in patients undergoing primary total hip arthroplasty under spinal anaesthesia with levobupivacaine. One hundred and eight patients were randomly allocated to receive either ultrasound-guided fascia iliaca block with 2 mg.kg−1 levobupivacaine (fascia iliaca group) or spinal morphine 100 ÎŒg plus a sham ultrasound-guided fascia iliaca block using saline (spinal morphine group). The pre-defined non-inferiority margin was a median difference between the groups of 10 mg in cumulative intravenous morphine use in the first 24 h postoperatively. Patients in the fascia iliaca group received 25 mg more intravenous morphine than patients in the spinal morphine group (95% CI 9.0–30.5 mg, p &lt; 0.001). Ultrasound-guided fascia iliaca block was significantly worse than spinal morphine in the provision of analgesia in the first 24 h after total hip arthroplasty. No increase in side-effects was noted in the spinal morphine group but the study was not powered to investigate all secondary outcomes

    Comparison of bar strengths in optical and near-infrared for the OSUBSGS sample

    We use a gravitational bar torque method to compare bar strengths (the maximum tangential force normalized by radial force) in B and H-band images of 152 galaxies from the Ohio State University Bright Spiral Galaxy Survey. Our main motivation is to check how much the difference in the rest-frame wavelength could affect comparisons of bar strengths in low and high redshift observations. Between these two bands we find an average bar strength ratio Q_B/H= 1.25 which factor is nearly independent of the morphological type. We show that Q_B/H > 1 is mostly due to reduced bulge dilution of radial forces in the B-band. The bar torque method needs an estimate for the vertical scale height of the galaxy, based on the radial scale length of the disk and the galaxy's morphological type. Since these two might not always be possible to determine at high redshifts in a reliable manner, we also checked that similar results are obtained with vertical scale heights estimated from the radii corresponding to the K-band surface brightness of 20 mag/arcsec^2. Also, we made a simple test of the usability of the bar torque method at high redshifts by checking the effects of image degradation (nearest neighbour sampling without any adjustment of noise levels): we found that the estimated bar strengths varied by +/- 10% at most as long as the total extent of the bar was at least 10 pixels. Overall, we show that the gravitational bar torque method should provide a proficient tool for quantifying bar strengths also at high redshifts.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, accepted to MNRA
