Overview Of Nonlinear Kinetic Instabilities
The saturation of shear Alfven-like waves by alpha particles is presented from the general viewpoint of determining the saturation mechanisms of basic waves in a plasma destabilized by a perturbing source of free energy. The formalism is reviewed and then followed by analyses of isolated mode saturation far from and close to marginal stability. The effect of multiple waves that are isolated or are overlapping is then discussed. The presentation is concluded with a discussion of a non-conventional quasilinear theory that covers both extreme cases as well as the intermediate regime between the extremes.Physic
Nonlinear dispersion of stationary waves in collisionless plasmas
A nonlinear dispersion of a general stationary wave in collisionless plasma
is obtained in a non-differential form from a single-particle
oscillation-center Hamiltonian. For electrostatic oscillations in nonmagnetized
plasma, considered as a paradigmatic example, the linear dielectric function is
generalized, and the trapped particle contribution to the wave frequency shift
is found analytically as a function of the wave amplitude .
Smooth distributions yield , as usual. However,
beam-like distributions of trapped electrons result in different power laws, or
even a logarithmic nonlinearity, which are derived as asymptotic limits of the
same dispersion relation
Recovery from Hepatorenal Syndrome after Orthotopic Liver Transplantation
Three patients with progressive renal failure and advanced hepatic insufficiency due to cirrhosis of the liver underwent orthotopic liver transplantation. All three patients had immediate improvement in hepatic function and within two weeks after liver replacement regained nearly normal kidney function. However, the renal recovery was delayed in each case, and its course was not uniform. Plasma renin activity was high, and renin substrate was low before transplantation in one case in which these measurements were obtained; both returned to normal soon after liver replacement. Inter-layer Hall effect in double quantum wells subject to in-plane magnetic fields
We report on a theoretical study of the transport properties of two coupled
two-dimensional electron systems subject to in-plane magnetic fields. The
charge redistribution in double wells induced by the Lorenz force in crossed
electric and magnetic fields has been studied. We have found that the
redistribution of the charge and the related inter-layer Hall effect originate
in the chirality of diamagnetic currents and give a substantial contribution to
the conductivity.Comment: 7 RevTex pages, 4 figures, appendix added and misprint in Eq. (11)

The response of four calcium hydroxides on monkey pulps
. Dentinal bridge formation and pulpal responses of four calcium hydroxide materials, pulp capping medicaments, MFC®, Experimental MFC-12, Dycal® and Pulpdent®, were evaluated in primary and permanent monkey teeth. A total of 60 primary and 60 permanent teeth were used with each material placed in a Class V cavity exposure in Rhesus monkey teeth. The materials were placed on the exposed pulp tissue and were histologically evaluated at 3 days, 5 weeks and 8 weeks. After perfusion the teeth were processed using routine histological procedures. The 3-day pulpal responses in both primary and permanent teeth were moderate, characterized by disruption of the pulpal tissue directly beneath the exposure site and a zone of acute inflammation and hemorrhage in the underlying pulp. The 5-week response showed histological differences between the four medicaments, with Dycal producing the least amount of pulpal irritation with reparative dentin bridges occurring in 50% of the permanent teeth. Experimental MFC-12 stimulated one reparative dentin bridge, while Pulpdent and MFC showed no evidence of bridge formation. Pulpal responses to Dycal were moderate and moderate to severe for the other calcium hydroxide compounds. No reparative dentin bridges were seen in the primary teeth at 5 weeks with any of the materials, and the pulpal responses were of a moderate degree at that time. Eight-week responses were similar to the 5-week responses. Dycal provoked a slight to moderate pulpal response with 50% success at bridging. Experimental MFC-12 initiated pulpal responses in the moderate to severe range with some bridging evident. Pulpdent incited moderate to severe histological responses with three teeth demonstrating bridge formation, and MFC provoked severe pulpal responses with no bridging. Primary teeth showed some bridging for all compounds except those treated with MFC, in which no evidence of bridging occurred, and moderate to severe pulpal responses were present.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/72823/1/j.1600-0714.1980.tb00393.x.pd
A comparison of incompressible limits for resistive plasmas
The constraint of incompressibility is often used to simplify the
magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) description of linearized plasma dynamics because it
does not affect the ideal MHD marginal stability point. In this paper two
methods for introducing incompressibility are compared in a cylindrical plasma
model: In the first method, the limit is taken, where
is the ratio of specific heats; in the second, an anisotropic mass
tensor is used, with the component parallel to the magnetic
field taken to vanish, . Use of resistive MHD reveals
the nature of these two limits because the Alfv\'en and slow magnetosonic
continua of ideal MHD are converted to point spectra and moved into the complex
plane. Both limits profoundly change the slow-magnetosonic spectrum, but only
the second limit faithfully reproduces the resistive Alfv\'en spectrum and its
wavemodes. In ideal MHD, the slow magnetosonic continuum degenerates to the
Alfv\'en continuum in the first method, while it is moved to infinity by the
second. The degeneracy in the first is broken by finite resistivity. For
numerical and semi-analytical study of these models, we choose plasma
equilibria which cast light on puzzling aspects of results found in earlier
literature.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figure
Trapped Li : A high T_c superfluid ?
We consider the effect of the indirect interaction due to the exchange of
density fluctuations on the critical temperature of superfluid Li . We
obtain the strong coupling equation giving this critical temperature. This
equation is solved approximately by retaining the same set of diagrams as in
the paramagnon model. We show that, near the instability threshold, the
attractive interaction due to density fluctuations gives rise to a strong
increase in the critical temperature, providing a clear signature of the
existence of fluctuation induced interactions.Comment: 4 pages, revtex, 1 figur
