On Source Density Evolution of Gamma-ray Bursts

Recent optical afterglow observations of gamma-ray bursts indicate a setting and distance scale that many relate to star-formation regions. In this paper, we use and a set of artificial trigger thresholds to probe several potential GRB source density evolutionary scenarios. In particular, we compare a uniform subset of BATSE 4B data to cosmological scenarios where GRBs evolve as the comoving density, the star formation rate, the QSO rate, and the SN Type Ic rate. Standard candle bursts with power-law spectra and a universe without vacuum energy were assumed. Our results significantly favor a comoving density model, implying that GRB source density evolution is weaker than expected in these evolutionary scenarios. GRB density might still follow star-formation rates given proper concurrent GRB luminosity evolution, significant beaming, significant error in standard candle assumptions, or were a significant modification of star formation rate estimates to occur.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, accepted by Ap

Competition between the BCS superconductivity and ferromagnetic spin fluctuations in MgCNi3_3

The low temperature specific heat of the superconductor MgCNi3_3 and a non-superconductor MgC0.85_{0.85}Ni3_3 is investigated in detail. An additional contribution is observed from the data of MgCNi3_3 but absent in MgC0.85_{0.85}Ni3_3, which is demonstrated to be insensitive to the applied magnetic field even up to 12 Tesla. A detailed discussion on its origin is then presented. By subtracting this additional contribution, the zero field specific heat of MgCNi3_3 can be well described by the BCS theory with the gap ratio (Δ/kBTc\Delta/k_BT_c) determined by the previous tunneling measurements. The conventional s-wave pairing state is further proved by the magnetic field dependence of the specific heat at low temperatures and the behavior of the upper critical field.Comment: To appear in Physical Review B, 6 pages, 7 figure

The mechanical relaxation study of polycrystalline MgCNi3

The mechanical relaxation spectra of a superconducting and a non-superconducting MgCNi3 samples were measured from liquid nitrogen temperature to room temperature at frequency of kilohertz. There are two internal friction peaks (at 300 K labeled as P1 and 125 K as P2) for the superconducting sample. For the non-superconducting one, the position of P1 shifts to 250 K, while P2 is almost completely depressed. It is found that the peak position of P2 shifts towards higher temperature under higher measuring frequency. The calculated activation energy is 0.13eV. We propose an explanation relating P2 to the carbon atom jumping among the off-center positions. And further we expect that the behaviors of carbon atoms maybe correspond to the normal state crossovers around 150 K and 50 K observed by many other experiments.Comment: 4 figure

Integrated methodology for supplier selection: the case of a sphygmomanometer manufacturer in Taiwan

Supplier selection is a critical multi-criterion decision-making activity for suc- cessful supply chain management. This study involved developing an integrated supplier selection methodology, which is constructed using analytic network process, data envelop- ment analysis, and multiple objective particle swarm optimization. The proposed integrated methodology can account for multiple supplier selection criteria and set boundaries on weight value for multiple objective data envelopment analysis inputs and outputs. To solve the data envelopment analysis model, a new algorithm based on multiple objective particle swarm optimization is introduced, which embeds with tabu list and group mechanisms, and then, it is found to be superior to the compared algorithms in solving performance on three test functions and the illustrative case. In addition, the proposed integrated method- ology was applied to a supplier selection problem of sphygmomanometer manufacturer in Taiwan to verify its applicability of decision-making process. The results show that the methodology can be implemented as an effective decision aid for supplier selection under multiple criteria with weight restrictions
