Clear and Compress: Computing Persistent Homology in Chunks

We present a parallelizable algorithm for computing the persistent homology of a filtered chain complex. Our approach differs from the commonly used reduction algorithm by first computing persistence pairs within local chunks, then simplifying the unpaired columns, and finally applying standard reduction on the simplified matrix. The approach generalizes a technique by G\"unther et al., which uses discrete Morse Theory to compute persistence; we derive the same worst-case complexity bound in a more general context. The algorithm employs several practical optimization techniques which are of independent interest. Our sequential implementation of the algorithm is competitive with state-of-the-art methods, and we improve the performance through parallelized computation.Comment: This result was presented at TopoInVis 2013 (http://www.sci.utah.edu/topoinvis13.html

Crossover from Single-Ion to Coherent Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior in Ce1−x_{1-x}Lax_xNi9_9Ge4_4

We report specific heat and magneto-resistance studies on the compound Ce1−x{}_{1-x}Lax{}_xNi9{}_9Ge4{}_4 for various concentrations over the entire stoichiometric range. Our data reveal single-ion scaling with Ce-concentration between x=0.1x = 0.1 and 0.95. Furthermore, CeNi9{}_9Ge4{}_4 turns out to have the largest ever recorded value of the electronic specific heat Δc/T≈\Delta c/T \approx 5.5 J K−2mol−1\rm K^{-2}mol^{-1} at T=0.08T=0.08 K which was found in Cerium f-electron lattice systems. In the doped samples Δc/T\Delta c/T increases logarithmically in the temperature range between 3 K and 50 mK typical for non-Fermi liquid (nFl) behavior, while ρ\rho exhibits a Kondo-like minimum around 30 K, followed by a single-ion local nFl behavior. In contrast to this, CeNi9{}_9Ge4{}_4 flattens out in Δc/T\Delta c/T below 300 mK and displays a pronounced maximum in the resistivity curve at 1.5 K indicating a coherent heavy fermion groundstate. These properties render the compound Ce1−x{}_{1-x}Lax{}_xNi9{}_9Ge4{}_4 a unique system on the borderline between Fermi liquid and nFl physics.Comment: 2 pages, 3 figures, SCES0

Heavy fermion superconductivity and magnetic order in non-centrosymmetric CePt3SiCePt_3Si

CePt3Si\rm CePt_3Si is a novel heavy fermion superconductor, crystallising in the CePt3B\rm CePt_3B structure as a tetragonally distorted low symmetry variant of the AuCu3\rm AuCu_3 structure type. CePt3Si\rm CePt_3Si exhibits antiferromagnetic order at TN≈2.2T_N \approx 2.2 K and enters into a heavy fermion superconducting state at Tc≈0.75T_c \approx 0.75 K. Large values of Hc2â€Č≈−8.5H_{c2}' \approx -8.5 T/K and Hc2(0)≈5H_{c2}(0) \approx 5 T refer to heavy quasiparticles forming Cooper pairs. Hitherto, CePt3Si\rm CePt_3Si is the first heavy fermion superconductor without a center of symmetry.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Finite-Width Effects in Top Quark Production at Hadron Colliders

    Get PDF
Production cross sections for t\bar{t} and t\bar{t}j events at hadron colliders are calculated, including finite width effects and off resonance contributions for the entire decay chain, t --> bW --> b\ell\nu, for both top quarks. Resulting background rates to Higgs search at the CERN LHC are updated for inclusive H --> WW studies and for H --> \tau\tau and H --> WW decays in weak boson fusion events. Finite width effects are large, increasing t\bar{t}(j) rates by 20% or more, after typical cuts which are employed for top-background rejection.Comment: 32 pages, 11 figures, 7 tables; minor changes, reference added, to be published in Phys. Unusual Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior of Ce1−x_{1-x}Lax_{x}Ni9_{9}Ge4_4 Analyzed in a Single Impurity Anderson Model with Crystal Field Effects

    Get PDF
CeNi9_{9}Ge4_4 exhibits unusual non-Fermi liquid behavior with the largest ever recorded value of the electronic specific heat ΔC/T≅5.5\Delta C/T \cong 5.5 JK−2^{-2}mol−1^{-1} without showing any evidence of magnetic order. Specific heat measurements show that the logarithmic increase of the Sommerfeld coefficient flattens off below 200 mK. In marked contrast, the local susceptibility Δχ\Delta\chi levels off well above 200 mK and already becomes constant below 1 K. Furthermore, the entropy reaches 2RRln2 below 20 K corresponding to a four level system. An analysis of CC and χ\chi was performed in terms of an SU(N=4)SU(N=4) single impurity Anderson model with additional crystal electric field (CEF) splitting. Numerical renormalization group calculations point to a possible consistent description of the different low temperature scales in Δc\Delta c and Δχ\Delta \chi stemming from the interplay of Kondo effect and crystal field splitting.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figure

Collinear effective theory at subleading order and its application to heavy-light currents

    Get PDF
We consider a collinear effective theory of highly energetic quarks with energy E, interacting with collinear and soft gluons by integrating out collinear degrees of freedom to subleading order. The collinear effective theory offers a systematic expansion in power series of a small parameter lambda ~ p_{\perp}/E, where p_{\perp} is the transverse momentum of a collinear particle. We construct the effective Lagrangian to first order in λ\lambda, and discuss its features including additional symmetries such as collinear gauge invariance and reparameterization invariance. Heavy-light currents can be matched from the full theory onto the operators in the collinear effective theory at one loop and to order lambda. We obtain heavy-light current operators in the effective theory, calculate their Wilson coefficients at this order, and the renormalization group equations for the Wilson coefficients are solved. As an application, we calculate the form factors for decays of B mesons to light energetic mesons to order lambda and at leading-logarithmic order in alpha_s.Comment: 29 pages, 5 figures, revised versio

Gaming with eutrophication: Contribution to integrating water quantity and quality management at catchment level

The Metropolitan Region of Sao Paulo (MRSP) hosts 18 million inhabitants. A complex system of 23 interconnected reservoirs was built to ensure its water supply. Half of the potable water produced for MRSP's population (35 m3/s) is imported from a neighbour catchment, the other half is produced within the Alto TietĂȘ catchment, where 99% of the population lives. Perimeters of land use restriction were defined to contain uncontrolled urbanization, as domestic effluents were causing increasing eutrophication of some of these reservoirs. In the 90's catchment committees and sub committees were created to promote discussion between stakeholders and develop catchment plans. The committees are very well structured "on paper". However, they are not very well organised and face a lack of experience. The objective of this work was to design tools that would strengthen their discussion capacities. The specific objective of the AguAloca process was to integrate the quality issue and its relation to catchment management as a whole in these discussions. The work was developed in the Alto TietĂȘ Cabeceiras sub-catchment, one of the 5 sub catchments of the Alto-TietĂȘ. It contains 5 interconnected dams, and presents competitive uses such as water supply, industry, effluent dilution and irrigated agriculture. A RPG was designed following a companion modelling approach (Etienne et al., 2003). It contains a friendly game-board, a set of individual and collective rules and a computerized biophysical model. The biophysical model is used to simulate water allocation and quality processes at catchment level. It articulates 3 modules. A simplified nutrient discharge model permits the estimation of land use nutrient exportation. An arc-node model simulates water flows and associated nutrient charges from one point of the hydrographical network to another. The Vollenweider model is used for simulating specific reservoir dynamics. The RPG allows players to make individual and collective decisions related to water allocation and the management of its quality. Impacts of these decisions are then simulated using the biophysical model. Specific indicators of the game are then updated and may influence player's behaviour (actions) in following rounds. To introduce discussions on the management of water quality at a catchment level, an issue that is rarely explicitly dealt with, four game sessions were implemented involving representatives of basin committees and water and sanitation engineers. During the game session, the participants took advantage of the water quality output of the biophysical model to test management alternatives such as rural sewage collection or effluent dilution. The biophysical model accelerated calculations of flows and eutrophication rates that were then returned to the game board with explicit indicators of quantity and quality. Players could easily test decisions impacting on qualitative water processes and visualize the simulation results directly on the game board that was representing a friendly, virtual and simplified catchment. The Agualoca game proved its ability to turn complex water processes understandable for a non totally initiated public. This experience contributed to a better understanding of multiple-use water management and also of joint management of water quality and quantity. (RĂ©sumĂ© d'auteur
