Controlled DNA compaction within chromatin: the tail-bridging effect
We study the mechanism underlying the attraction between nucleosomes, the
fundamental packaging units of DNA inside the chromatin complex. We introduce a
simple model of the nucleosome, the eight-tail colloid, consisting of a charged
sphere with eight oppositely charged, flexible, grafted chains that represent
the terminal histone tails. We demonstrate that our complexes are attracted via
the formation of chain bridges and that this attraction can be tuned by
changing the fraction of charged monomers on the tails. This suggests a
physical mechanism of chromatin compaction where the degree of DNA condensation
can be controlled via biochemical means, namely the acetylation and

Effects of different solutions consumed during exercise on cognitive function of male college soccer players
Background/Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the effects of three solutions, i.e. carbohydrate-electrolyte-solution (CES), carbohydrate-electrolyte-protein-solution (CEPS), and placebo (PLA), on cognitive function of college soccer players.
Methods: Sixteen male college soccer players completed three main trials in a randomized cross-over study design. In each main trial, participants completed 90 min Loughborough Intermittent Shuttle Test (LIST) protocol and consumed one of three solutions. The cognitive function tests were performed; blood glucose and lactate concentrations, and several subjective measurements were also recorded in each trial.
Results: Compared with pre-exercise level, the accuracy of Rapid Visual Information Processing test (RVIPT) and the response time in Visual Search Test (VST, complex level) after LIST improved in CES and CEPS trials, but not in PLA trial. However, the accuracy of VST (complex level) decreased in both CES and CEPS trials, compared with PLA trial. CEPS consumption improved accuracy in VST (simple level), compared with CES consumption. Blood glucose concentrations were well maintained in CEPS trial, but not in CES and PLA trials.
Conclusion: It seems that both CES and CEPS consumption show certain benefits on some aspects of cognitive function in male college soccer players in Hong Kong. However, these effects may be specific to the cognitive domain tested
Rate- and State-Dependent Friction Law and Statistical Properties of Earthquakes
In order to clarify how the statistical properties of earthquakes depend on
the constitutive law characterizing the stick-slip dynamics, we make an
extensive numerical simulation of the one-dimensional spring-block model with
the rate- and state-dependent friction law. Both the magnitude distribution and
the recurrence-time distribution are studied with varying the constitutive
parameters characterizing the model. While a continuous spectrum of seismic
events from smaller to larger magnitudes is obtained, earthquakes described by
this model turn out to possess pronounced ``characteristic'' features.Comment: Minor revisions are made in the text and in the figures. Accepted for

Path integral Monte Carlo simulations of silicates
We investigate the thermal expansion of crystalline SiO in the --
cristobalite and the -quartz structure with path integral Monte Carlo
(PIMC) techniques. This simulation method allows to treat low-temperature
quantum effects properly. At temperatures below the Debye temperature, thermal
properties obtained with PIMC agree better with experimental results than those

Non-gastric marginal zone B cell lymphoma: Clinicopathologic features and treatment results
The optimal treatment strategy and outcome of non-gastric marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) remains undefined. The role of rituximab and fludarabine in MZL has not been critically appraised and compared with conventional chemotherapy. We retrospectively analyzed 81 consecutive patients with non-gastric MZL (mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, n = 66; splenic MZL, n = 11; nodal MZL, n = 4). As a group, the treatment results were favorable, with an overall response rate of 87% and a complete response (CR) rate of 73%. The CR rate was similar for conventional chemotherapy, and rituximab- and fludarabine-containing regimens. However, the relapse rate was significantly decreased in rituximab- and fludarabine-containing regimens. The use of rituximab and fludarabine was associated with acceptable side effects. For splenic MZL, splenectomy was significantly associated with a superior CR rate. Early stage, good performance status, and low international prognostic index risk scores significantly impacted on CR rate and survivals. Quantum and Classical Orientational Ordering in Solid Hydrogen
We present a unified view of orientational ordering in phases I, II, and III
of solid hydrogen. Phases II and III are orientationally ordered, while the
ordering objects in phase II are angular momenta of rotating molecules, and in
phase III the molecules themselves. This concept provides quantitative
explanation of the vibron softening, libron and roton spectra, and increase of
the IR vibron oscillator strength in phase III. The temperature dependence of
the effective charge parallels the frequency shifts of the IR and Raman

Crystal-like high frequency phonons in the amorphous phases of solid water
The high frequency dynamics of low- (LDA) and high-density amorphous-ice
(HDA) and of cubic ice (I_c) has been measured by inelastic X-ray Scattering
(IXS) in the 1-15 nm^{-1} momentum transfer (Q) range. Sharp phonon-like
excitations are observed, and the longitudinal acoustic branch is identified up
to Q = 8nm^{-1} in LDA and I_c and up to 5nm^{-1} in HDA. The narrow width of
these excitations is in sharp contrast with the broad features observed in all
amorphous systems studied so far. The "crystal-like" behavior of amorphous
ices, therefore, implies a considerable reduction in the number of decay
channels available to sound-like excitations which is assimilated to low local

A combined XAS and XRD Study of the High-Pressure Behaviour of GaAsO4 Berlinite
Combined X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD)
experiments have been carried out on GaAsO4 (berlinite structure) at high
pressure and room temperature. XAS measurements indicate four-fold to six-fold
coordination changes for both cations. The two local coordination
transformations occur at different rates but appear to be coupled. A reversible
transition to a high pressure crystalline form occurs around 8 GPa. At a
pressure of about 12 GPa, the system mainly consists of octahedral gallium
atoms and a mixture of arsenic in four-fold and six-fold coordinations. A
second transition to a highly disordered material with both cations in six-fold
