Solar driven liquid metal MHD power generator
A solar energy collector focuses solar energy onto a solar oven which is attached to a mixer which in turn is attached to the channel of a MHD generator. Gas enters the oven and a liquid metal enters the mixer. The gas/liquid metal mixture is heated by the collected solar energy and moves through the MHD generator thereby generating electrical power. The mixture is then separated and recycled
The influence of national culture on the attitude towards mobile recommender systems

Copyright @ 2013 Elsevier B.V.This study aimed to identify factors that influence user attitudes towards mobile recommender systems and to examine how these factors interact with cultural values to affect attitudes towards this technology. Based on the theory of reasoned action, belief factors for mobile recommender systems are identified in three dimensions: functional, contextual, and social. Hypotheses explaining different impacts of cultural values on the factors affecting attitudes were also proposed. The research model was tested based on data collected in China, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. Findings indicate that functional and social factors have significant impacts on user attitudes towards mobile recommender systems. The relationships between belief factors and attitudes are moderated by two cultural values: collectivism and uncertainty avoidance. The theoretical and practical implications of applying theory of reasoned action and innovation diffusion theory to explain the adoption of new technologies in societies with different cultures are also discussed.National Research Foundation

Micro-electroforming metallic bipolar electrodes for mini-DMFC stacks
This paper describes the development of metallic bipolar plate fabrication
using micro-electroforming process for mini-DMFC (direct methanol fuel cell)
stacks. Ultraviolet (UV) lithography was used to define micro-fluidic channels
using a photomask and exposure process. Micro-fluidic channels mold with 300
micrometers thick and 500 micrometers wide were firstly fabricated in a
negative photoresist onto a stainless steel plate. Copper micro-electroforming
was used to replicate the micro-fluidic channels mold. Following by sputtering
silver (Ag) with 1.2 micrometers thick, the metallic bipolar plates were
completed. The silver layer is used for corrosive resistance. The completed
mini-DMFC stack is a 2x2 cm2 fuel cell stack including a 1.5x1.5 cm2 MEA
(membrane electrode assembly). Several MEAs were assembly into mini-DMFC stacks
using the completed metallic bipolar plates. All test results showed the
metallic bipolar plates suitable for mini-DMFC stacks. The maximum output power
density is 9.3mW/cm2 and current density is 100 mA/cm2 when using 8 vol. %
methanol as fuel and operated at temperature 30 degrees C. The output power
result is similar to other reports by using conventional graphite bipolar
plates. However, conventional graphite bipolar plates have certain difficulty
to be machined to such micro-fluidic channels. The proposed
micro-electroforming metallic bipolar plates are feasible to miniaturize DMFC
stacks for further portable 3C applications.Comment: Submitted on behalf of EDA Publishing Association

Solar-driven liquid metal magnetohydrodynamic generator
A solar oven heated by concentrated solar radiation as the heat source of a liquid metal magnetohydrodynamic (LMMHD) power generation system is proposed. The design allows the production of electric power in space, as well as on Earth, at high rates of efficiency. Two types of the solar oven suitable for the system are discussed
Optical conductivity of one-dimensional narrow-gap semiconductors
The optical conductivities of two one-dimensional narrow-gap semiconductors,
anticrossing quantum Hall edge states and carbon nanotubes, are studied using
bosonization method. A lowest order renormalization group analysis indicates
that the bare band gap can be treated perturbatively at high
frequency/temperature. At very low energy scale the optical conductivity is
dominated by the excitonic contribution, while at temperature higher than a
crossover temperature the excitonic features are eliminated by thermal
fluctuations. In case of carbon nanotubes the crossover temperature scale is
estimated to be 300 K.Comment: RevTeX4 file, 6 pages, no figur
The 4D area navigation system description and flight test results
A 4D area navigation system was designed to guide aircraft along a prespecified flight path (reference path) such that the aircraft would arrive at the approach gate at a time specified by the ATC controller. Key components to achieve this requirement were: (1) stored reference trajectories; (2) a continuously recomputed capture trajectory to a selected waypoint on the reference trajectory so as to achieve the desired time of arrival; (3) electronic situation displays; and (4) a control system to follow the overall trajectory in space and time. The system was implemented in a digital integrated avionics system (STOLAND) installed on a CV-340 airplane. Although the 4D system was designed primarily for automatic operation, it was flight tested in a flight director mode (the pilot follows the flight director commands), because the CV-340 autopilot servos were not tied to the avionics system. The flight test showed that, even in the flight director mode, the pilot did achieve the objectives of path tracking and time of arrival control with only moderate workload. The system also permitted controlled delay of the time of arrival by path stretching, which takes advantage of the continuously changing capture trajectory to predict the time of arrival. Simulations in the automatic and manual modes were used to complement the flight data
Modulo Three Problem With A Cellular Automaton Solution
An important global property of a bit string is the number of ones in it. It
has been found that the parity (odd or even) of this number can be found by a
sequence of deterministic, translational invariant cellular automata with
parallel update in succession for a total of O(N^2) time. In this paper, we
discover a way to check if this number is divisible by three using the same
kind of cellular automata in O(N^3) time. We also speculate that the method
described here could be generalized to check if it is divisible by four and
other positive integers.Comment: 10 pages in revtex 4.0, using amsfont
Neutron Electric Dipole Moment at Fixed Topology
We describe the finite volume effects of CP-odd quantities, such as the
neutron electric dipole moment and the anapole moment in the -vacuum,
under different topological sectors. We evaluate the three-point Green's
functions for the electromagnetic current in a fixed non-trivial topological
sector in order to extract these CP-odd observables. We discuss the role of
zero modes in the CP-odd Green's function and show that, in the quenched
approximation, there is a power divergence in the quark mass for CP-odd
quantities at finite volume.Comment: 12 pages, revised manuscript to be publishe
