Operando STM study of the interaction of imidazolium-based ionic liquid with graphite
Understanding interactions at the interfaces of carbon with ionic liquids (ILs) is crucially beneficial for the diagnostics and performance improvement of electrochemical devices containing carbon as active materials or conductive additives in electrodes and ILs as solvents or additives in electrolytes. The interfacial interactions of three typical imidazolium-based ILs, 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (AMImTFSI) ILs having ethyl (C2), butyl (C4) and octyl (C8) chains in their cations, with highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) were studied in-situ by electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (EC-STM). The etching of HOPG surface and the exfoliation of graphite/graphene flakes as well as cation intercalation were observed at the HOPG/C2MImTFSI interface. The etching also takes place in C4MImTFSI at −1.5 V vs Pt but only at step edges with a much slower rate, whereas C8MIm+ cations adsorbs strongly on the HOPG surface under similar conditions with no observable etching or intercalation. The EC-STM observations can be explained by the increase in van der Waals interaction between the cations and the graphite surface with increasing length of alkyl chains
Spectroscopic Observations of Planetary Nebulae in the Northern Spur of M31
We present spectroscopy of three planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Northern Spur
of the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) obtained with the Double Spectrograph on the 5.1
m Hale Telescope at the Palomar Observatory. The samples are selected from the
observations of Merrett et al. Our purpose is to investigate formation of the
substructures of M31 using PNe as a tracer of chemical abundances. The [O III]
4363 auroral line is detected in the spectra of two objects, enabling
temperature determinations. Ionic abundances are derived from the observed
collisionally excited lines, and elemental abundances of nitrogen, oxygen, and
neon as well as sulphur and argon are estimated. Correlations between oxygen
and the alpha-element abundance ratios are studied, using our sample and the
M31 disk and bulge PNe from the literature. In one of the three PNe, we
observed relatively higher oxygen abundance compared to the disk sample in M31
at similar galactocentric distances. The results of at least one of the three
Northern Spur PNe might be in line with the proposed possible origin of the
Northern Spur substructure of M31, i.e. the Northern Spur is connected to the
Southern Stream and both substructures comprise the tidal debris of the

Optical properties of TlNi2Se2: Observation of pseudogap formation
The quasi-two-dimensional nickel chalcogenides is a newly
discovered superconductor. We have performed optical spectroscopy study on
single crystals over a broad frequency range at various
temperatures. The overall optical reflectance spectra are similar to those
observed in its isostructure . Both the suppression in
and the peaklike feature in suggest the progressive
formation of a pseudogap feature in the midinfrared range with decreasing
temperatures, which might be originated from the dynamic local fluctuation of
charge-density-wave (CDW) instability. We propose that the CDW instability in
is driven by the saddle points mechanism, due to the existence of
van Hove singularity very close to the Fermi energy.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Direct Improvement of Hamiltonian Lattice Gauge Theory
We demonstrate that a direct approach to improving Hamiltonian lattice gauge
theory is possible. Our approach is to correct errors in the Kogut-Susskind
Hamiltonian by incorporating additional gauge invariant terms. The coefficients
of these terms are chosen so that the order classical errors vanish. We
conclude with a brief discussion of tadpole improvement in Hamiltonian lattice

Measurements of the semileptonic decays B[overbar]→Dℓν[overbar] and B[overbar]→D^*ℓν[overbar] using a global fit to DXℓν[overbar] final states
Semileptonic B[overbar] decays to DXℓν[overbar](ℓ=e or μ) are selected by reconstructing D^0ℓ and D^+ℓ combinations from a sample of 230×10^6 Υ(4S)→BB[overbar] decays recorded with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e^+e^- collider at SLAC. A global fit to these samples in a three-dimensional space of kinematic variables is used to determine the branching fractions B(B^-→D^0ℓν[overbar])=(2.34±0.03±0.13)% and B(B^-→D^(*0)ℓν[overbar])=(5.40±0.02±0.21)% where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. The fit also determines form-factor parameters in a parametrization based on heavy quark effective theory, resulting in ρ_D^2=1.20±0.04±0.07 for B[overbar]→Dℓν[overbar] and ρ_(D*)^2=1.22±0.02±0.07 for B[overbar]→D^*ℓν[overbar]. These values are used to obtain the product of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |V_(cb)| times the form factor at the zero recoil point for both B[overbar]→Dℓν[overbar] decays, G(1)|V_(cb)|=(43.1±0.8±2.3)×10^(-3), and for B[overbar]→D^*ℓν[overbar] decays, F(1)|V_(cb)|=(35.9±0.2±1.2)×10^(-3)
Determination of organic acids evolution during apple cider fermentation using an improved HPLC analysis method
An efficient method for analyzing ten organic acids in food, namely citric, pyruvic, malic, lactic, succinic, formic, acetic, adipic, propionic and butyric acids, using HPLC was developed. Boric acid was added into the mobile phase to separate lactic and succinic acids, and a post-column buffer solution [5 mmol/L p-toluensulfonic acid (p-TSA) + 20 mmol/L bis (2-hydroxyethyl) iminotris (hydroxymethyl) methane (bis¿tris) + 100 ¿mol/L sodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic (EDTA-2Na)] was used to improve the sensitivity of detection. The average spiked recoveries for the ten organic acids ranged from 82.9 to 127.9% with relative standard deviations of 1.44¿4.71%. The linear ranges of determination were from 15 to 1,000 mg/L with correlation coefficients of 0.9995¿0.9999. The metabolism of organic acids in cider, and the effect of nutrients including diammonium phosphate (DAP), thiamine, biotin, niacinamide and pantothenic acid on their metabolism, were studied using this method of analysis. We found that before cider brewing, additions of 200 mg/L DAP and 0.3 mg/L thiamine to apple juice concentrate results in a high quality cider
Measurements of the τ mass and the mass difference of the τ^+ and τ^- at BABAR
We present the result from a precision measurement of the mass of the τ lepton, M_τ, based on 423 fb^(-1) of data recorded at the Υ(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector. Using a pseudomass endpoint method, we determine the mass to be 1776.68±0.12(stat)±0.41(syst) MeV. We also measure the mass difference between the τ^+ and τ^-, and obtain (M_(τ+)-M_(τ-))/M_(AVG)^τ=(-3.4±1.3(stat)±0.3(syst))×10^(-4), where M^τ_(AVG) is the average value of M_(τ+) and M_(τ-)
Search for B^+→ℓ^+ν_ℓ recoiling against B^-→D^0ℓ^-ν̅ X
We present a search for the decay B^+→ℓ^+ν_ℓ(ℓ=τ, μ, or e) in (458.9±5.1)×10^6 BB̅ pairs recorded with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B-factory. We search for these B decays in a sample of B^+B^- events where one B-meson is reconstructed as B^-→D^0ℓ^-ν̅ X. Using the method of Feldman and Cousins, we obtain B(B^+→τ^+ν_τ)=(1.7±0.8±0.2)×10^(-4), which excludes zero at 2.3σ. We interpret the central value in the context of the standard model and find the B meson decay constant to be f_B^2=(62±31)×10^3 MeV^2. We find no evidence for B^+→e^+ν_e and B^+→μ^+ν_μ and set upper limits at the 90% C.L. B(B^+→e^+ν_e)<0.8×10^(-5) and B(B^+→μ^+ν_μ)<1.1×10^(-5)
