    Evaluation of biological control agents for managing cucurbit powdery mildew on greenhouse-grown melon

    An evaluation was made of the ability of two mycoparasite-based products AQ10® (Ampelomyces quisqualis) and Mycotal® (Lecanicillium lecanii), as well as three strains of Bacillus subtilis, to manage powdery mildew disease, caused by Podosphaera fusca on melon seedlings maintained under different regimes of relative humidity and on plants grown under greenhouse conditions in Spain. In every case fungal and bacterial biocontrol agents (BCAs) performed better under conditions of high relative humidity (90–95% RH). In greenhouse experiments, the effectiveness of the mycoparasites to manage powdery mildew was absolutely dependent on mineral oil. The strains of B. subtilis provided disease control similar to that achieved with the mycoparasites or the fungicide azoxystrobin. Microscopic analysis showed the ability of these bacterial strains to efficiently colonize leaf surfaces and revealed the occurrence of antagonistic interactions between biological agents and P. fusca structures.     Prospect and potential of Burkholderia sp. against Phytophthora capsici Leonian: a causative agent for foot rot disease of black pepper

    Foot rot disease is a very destructive disease in black pepper in Malaysia. It is caused by Phytophthora capsici Leonian, which is a soilborne pathogenic protist (phylum, Oomycota) that infects aerial and subterranean structures of many host plants. This pathogen is a polycyclic, such that multiple cycles of infection and inoculum production occur in a single growing season. It is more prevalent in the tropics because of the favourable environmental conditions. The utilization of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) as a biological control agent has been successfully implemented in controlling many plant pathogens. Many studies on the exploration of beneficial organisms have been carried out such as Pseudomonas fluorescens, which is one of the best examples used for the control of Fusarium wilt in tomato. Similarly, P. fluorescens is found to be an effective biocontrol agent against the foot rot disease in black pepper. Nowadays there is tremendous novel increase in the species of Burkholderia with either mutualistic or antagonistic interactions in the environment. Burkholderia sp. is an indigenous PGPR capable of producing a large number of commercially important hydrolytic enzymes and bioactive substances that promote plant growth and health; are eco-friendly, biodegradable and specific in their actions; and have a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity in keeping down the population of phytopathogens, thus playing a great role in promoting sustainable agriculture today. Hence, in this book chapter, the potential applications of Burkholderia sp. to control foot rot disease of black pepper in Malaysia, their control mechanisms, plant growth promotion, commercial potentials and the future prospects as indigenous PGPR were discussed in relation to sustainable agriculture

    Position of totally thoracoscopic surgical ablation in the treatment of atrial fibrillation: An alternative method of conduction testing

    Recent advances in surgical techniques and understanding of the pathophysiology of atrial fibrillation has led to the development of a less invasive thoracoscopic surgical treatment including video-assisted bilateral pulmonary vein isolation using bipolar radiofrequency ablation clamps. More recently, the same operation became possible via a totally thoracoscopic approach. In this paper we describe technical aspects of the thoracoscopic approach to surgical treatment of AF and discuss its features, benefits and limitations. Furthermore, we present a new alternative technique of conduction testing using endoscopic multi-electrode recording catheters. An alternative electrophysiological mapping strategy involves a multi-electrode recording catheter designed primarily for percutaneous endocardial electrophysiologic mapping procedure. According to our initial experience, the recordings obtained from the multi-electrode catheters positioned around the pulmonary veins are more accurate than the recordings obtained from the multifunctional ablation and pacing pen. The totally thoracoscopic surgical ablation approach is a feasible and efficient treatment strategy for atrial fibrillation. The conduction testing can be easily and rapidly performed using a multifunctional pen or multi-electrode recording catheter

    The outcome of patients with peripartum cardiomyopathy and consecutive implantation of a left ventricular assist device

    Objectives Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a form of systolic heart failure occurring toward the end of pregnancy or in the period after delivery. Lack of myocardial recovery or therapy-refractory cardiogenic shock are rare complications and left ventricular assist device (LVAD) systems might be used as a life-saving option. The aim of this study was to investigate outcomes of PPCM patients supported with LVAD, registered in the European Registry for Patients with Mechanical Circulatory Support (EUROMACS). Methods All patients registered in EUROMACS with a primary diagnosis of PPCM were included in this study. Demographic, preoperative, intraoperative, postoperative, and follow-up data were collected and patients analysed concerning their outcome after initiation of LVAD therapy. Results Between May 2011 and September 2018, 16 patients with PPCM and consecutive LVAD implantation were enrolled into EUROMACS. The median age of the patient population was 31 (26;41) years with a mean left ventricular ejection fraction (LV-EF) of 15% +/- 6%. In-hospital mortality after LVAD implantation was 6% (n = 1). One-year mortality accounted for 13% (n = 2). Six patients (40%) were transplanted with a median support time of 769 (193;1529) days. Weaning of LVAD support due to ventricular recovery was feasible in 3 (20%) patients. Conclusion In patients with severe PPCM, LVAD therapy is associated with considerably low in-hospital mortality, potentially allowing bridging to heart transplantation, or left ventricular recovery. Therefore, durable mechanical support should be considered as a treatment option in this, by nature, young and often otherwise healthy patient population

    Outcomes in Patients Receiving HeartMate II Versus HVAD Left Ventricular Assist Device as a Bridge to Transplantation

    Objective. Ventricular assist devices have become a standard treatment for patients with advanced heart failure. We present data comparing results after implantation of HeartMate II (HM II) versus HVAD (HVV) left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) for the past 7 years at our institution. Methods. From July 2006 to August 2012, 121 consecutive patients underwent LVAD implantation: 70 (57.9%) received HM II and 51 (42.1%) HW. Patient demographics, perioperative characteristics, and laboratory parameters as well as postoperative outcome were compared retrospectively. Results. Patients in the HM II group were significantly younger (P < .01), with more deranged liver function (higher bilirubin [P = .02] and alanine aminotransferase [P = .01] levels), and had a significantly higher rate of preoperative infections requiring antibiotic treatment (P = .02) and a higher body core temperature (P < .01). Other demographic and preoperative parameters did not show statistical differences. Most postoperative characteristics were also similar between the two groups. HM II patients had a significantly higher transfusion rate, but there were no differences in incidence of resternotomy (P = .156). Recovery and VAD explantation were more likely in the HM II group (P = .02). Although there was no significant difference in survival (log rank test: P = .986; Breslow test: P = .827), HM II patients were more likely to develop a percutaneous site infection (P = .01). Conclusions. Both HM II and HW provide similar early postoperative outcome and good long-term survival. The differences observed between the groups may be related to demographic and preoperative factors rather than the type of the device used

    Long-term results after lung transplantation using organs from circulatory death donors: a propensity score-matched analysis

    OBJECTIVES: Due to organ shortage in lung transplantation (LTx), donation after circulatory death (DCD) has been implemented in several countries, contributing to an increasing number of organs transplanted. We sought to assess long-term outcomes after LTx with organs procured following circulatory death in comparison with those obtained from donors after brain death (DBD). METHODS: Between January 2007 and November 2013, 302 LTxs were performed in our institution, whereby 60 (19.9%) organs were retrieved from DCD donors. We performed propensity score matching (DCD: DBD = 1: 2) based on preoperative donor and recipient factors that were significantly different in univariate analysis. RESULTS: After propensity matching, there were no statistically significant differences between the groups in terms of demographics and preoperative donor and recipient characteristics. There were no significant differences regarding intraoperative variables and total ischaemic time. Patients from the DCD group had significantly higher incidence of primary graft dysfunction grade 3 at the end of the procedure (P = 0.014), and significantly lower pO(2)/FiO(2) ratio during the first 24 h after the procedure (P = 0.018). There was a trend towards higher incidence of the need for postoperative extracorporeal life support in the DCD group. Other postoperative characteristics were comparable. While the overall cumulative survival was not significantly different, the DCD group had significantly poorer results in terms of bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS)-free survival in the long-term follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Long-term results after LTx with organs procured following DCD are in general comparable with those obtained after DBD LTx. However, patients transplanted using organs from DCD donors have a predisposition for development of BOS in the longer follow-up
