Is the meson dynamically generated?
We study the problem whether the meson is generated `dynamically'. A
pedagogical analysis on the toy O(N) linear sigma model is performed and we
find that the large limit and the limit does not
commute. The sigma meson may not necessarily be described as a dynamically
generated resonance. On the contrary, the sigma meson may be more appropriately
described by considering it as an explicit degree of freedom in the effective
lagrangian.Comment: Contribution to ``Quark Confinement and Hadron Spectrum VII'', 2--7

Is the meson a dynamically generated resonance? -- a lesson learned from the O(N) model and beyond
O(N) linear model is solvable in the large limit and hence
provides a useful theoretical laboratory to test various unitarization
approximations. We find that the large limit and the
limit do not commute. In order to get the correct large spectrum one has
to firstly take the large limit. We argue that the meson may
not be described as generated dynamically. On the contrary, it is most
appropriately described at the same level as the pions, i.e, both appear
explicitly in the effective lagrangian. Actually it is very likely the
meson responsible for the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in a lagrangian
with linearly realized chiral symmetry.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figurs; references added; discussions slightly modified;

Standard model plethystics
We study the vacuum geometry prescribed by the gauge invariant operators of the minimal supersymmetric standard model via the plethystic program. This is achieved by using several tricks to perform the highly computationally challenging Molien-Weyl integral, from which we extract the Hilbert series, encoding the invariants of the geometry at all degrees. The fully refined Hilbert series is presented as the explicit sum of 1422 rational functions. We found a good choice of weights to unrefine the Hilbert series into a rational function of a single variable, from which we can read off the dimension and the degree of the vacuum moduli space of the minimal supersymmetric standard model gauge invariants. All data in Mathematica format are also presented
Sulforaphane induces adipocyte browning and promotes glucose and lipid utilization
Scope: Obesity is closely related to the imbalance of white adipose tissue storing excess calories, and brown adipose tissue dissipating energy to produce heat in mammals. Recent studies revealed that acquisition of brown characteristics by white adipocytes, termed âbrowning,â may positively contribute to cellular bioenergetics and metabolism homeostasis. The goal was to investigate the putative effects of natural antioxidant sulforaphane (1-isothiocyanate-4-methyl-sulfonyl butane; SFN) on browning of white adipocytes. Methods and Results: 3T3-L1 mature white adipocytes were treated with SFN for 48 h, and then the mitochondrial content, function, and energy utilization were assessed. SFN was found to induce 3T3-L1 adipocytes browning based on the increased mitochondrial content and activity of respiratory chain enzymes, whereas the mechanism involved the upregulation of nuclear factor E2-related factor 2/ sirtuin1/ peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1 alpha signaling. SFN enhanced uncoupling protein 1 expression, a marker for brown adipocyte, leading to the decrease in cellular ATP. SFN also enhanced glucose uptake and oxidative utilization, lipolysis and fatty acid oxidation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Conclusion: SFN-induced browning of white adipocytes enhanced the utilization of cellular fuel, and the application of SFN is a promising strategy to combat obesity and obesity-related metabolic disorder
Experimental Free-Space Distribution of Entangled Photon Pairs over a Noisy Ground Atmosphere of 13km
We report free-space distribution of entangled photon pairs over a noisy
ground atmosphere of 13km. It is shown that the desired entanglement can still
survive after the two entangled photons have passed through the noisy ground
atmosphere. This is confirmed by observing a space-like separated violation of
Bell inequality of . On this basis, we exploit the distributed
entangled photon source to demonstrate the BB84 quantum cryptography scheme.
The distribution distance of entangled photon pairs achieved in the experiment
is for the first time well beyond the effective thickness of the aerosphere,
hence presenting a significant step towards satellite-based global quantum
communication.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Circulating lipocalin-2 and retinol-binding protein 4 are associated with intima-media thickness and subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes
The lipocalin family proteins, including lipocalin-2 and retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4), are adipokines closely associated with obesity-related metabolic disorders. In this study, we evaluated the association of serum lipocalin-2 and RBP4 with intima-media thickness (IMT) and subclinical atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetic patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: Serum levels of lipocalin-2 and RBP4 were measured in 284 type 2 diabetic patients. Subclinical atherosclerosis was assessed by IMT at carotid, femoral and iliac arteries with ultrasound. Patients with subclinical atherosclerosis showed significantly higher circulating concentrations of lipocalin-2 and RBP4 when compared to those without [112.9 (86.4 to 202.1) ”g/L versus 77.2(55.0-150.4) ”g/L, 37.1(32.3-40.8) mg/L versus 23.2(20.1-29.2) mg/L, respectively; Pâ=â0.002, P<0.001, respectively]. Moreover, positive correlations were observed between carotid IMT and lipocalin-2 (râ=â0.170, Pâ=â0.018) or RBP4 (râ=â0.132, Pâ=â0.040), femoral IMT and lipocalin-2 (râ=â0.160, Pâ=â0.027), as well as between iliac IMT and RBP4 (râ=â0.241, P<0.001). Multiple logistic regression analysis further demonstrated that these two adipokines were independent risk factors for subclinical atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes. CONCLUSION: Background: Circulating levels of lipocalin-2 and RBP4 are positively correlated with carotid IMT and subclinical atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes, which suggests a potential role of these two lipid-binding chaperones in the pathogenesis of vascular complications of diabetes.published_or_final_versio
Experimental quantum "Guess my Number" protocol using multiphoton entanglement
We present an experimental demonstration of a modified version of the
entanglement-assisted "Guess my Number" protocol for the reduction of
communication complexity among three separated parties. The results of
experimental measurements imply that the separated parties can compute a
function of distributed inputs by exchanging less classical information than by
using any classical strategy. And the results also demonstrate the advantages
of entanglement-enhanced communication, which is very close to quantum
communication. The advantages are based on the properties of
Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Emergence of Symmetry in Complex Networks
Many real networks have been found to have a rich degree of symmetry, which
is a very important structural property of complex network, yet has been rarely
studied so far. And where does symmetry comes from has not been explained. To
explore the mechanism underlying symmetry of the networks, we studied
statistics of certain local symmetric motifs, such as symmetric bicliques and
generalized symmetric bicliques, which contribute to local symmetry of
networks. We found that symmetry of complex networks is a consequence of
similar linkage pattern, which means that nodes with similar degree tend to
share similar linkage targets. A improved version of BA model integrating
similar linkage pattern successfully reproduces the symmetry of real networks,
indicating that similar linkage pattern is the underlying ingredient that
responsible for the emergence of the symmetry in complex networks.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
