    Resummed Cross Section for Jet Production at Hadron Colliders

    We study the resummation of large logarithmic perturbative corrections to the single-inclusive jet cross section at hadron colliders. The corrections we address arise near the threshold for the partonic reaction, when the incoming partons have just enough energy to produce the high-transverse-momentum final state. The structure of the resulting logarithmic corrections is known to depend crucially on the treatment of the invariant mass of the produced jet at threshold. We allow the jet to have a non-vanishing mass at threshold, which most closely corresponds to the situation in experiment. Matching our results to available semi-analytical next-to-leading-order calculations, we derive resummed results valid to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy.     It has recently been suggested that collisions of transversely polarized protons and antiprotons at the GSI could be used to determine the nucleon's transversity densities from measurements of the double-spin asymmetry for the Drell-Yan process. We analyze the role of higher-order perturbative QCD corrections in this kinematic regime, in terms of the available fixed-order contributions as well as of all-order soft-gluon resummations. We find that the combined perturbative corrections to the individual unpolarized and transversely polarized cross sections are large. We trace these large enhancements to soft gluon emission near partonic threshold, and we suggest that with a physically-motivated cut-off enhancements beyond lowest order are moderated relative to resummed perturbation theory, but still significant. The unpolarized dilepton cross section for the GSI kinematics may therefore provide information on the relation of perturbative and nonperturbative dynamics in hadronic scattering. The spin asymmetry turns out to be rather robust, relatively insensitive to higher orders, resummation, and the cut-offs.Comment: 23 pages, 19 figures as eps. Some discussion and references added.     We present a recent study of the QCD corrections to dilepton production near partonic threshold in transversely polarized \bar{p}p scattering. We analyze the role of the higher-order perturbative QCD corrections in terms of the available fixed-order contributions as well as of all-order soft-gluon resummations for the kinematical regime of proposed experiments at GSI-FAIR. We find that perturbative corrections are large for both unpolarized and polarized cross sections, but that the spin asymmetries are stable.     Longitudinal spin transfer of Lambda and anti-Lambda in polarized pp collisions at \sqrt s=200 GeV at STAR

    We report our measurement on longitudinal spin transfer, D_LL, from high energy polarized protons to Λ\Lambda and Λˉ\bar{\Lambda} hyperons in proton-proton collisions at s=200GeV\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV with the STAR detector at RHIC. The current measurements cover Λ\Lambda, Λˉ\bar\Lambda pseudorapidity η<1.2|\eta| < 1.2 and transverse momenta pTp_T up to 4GeV/c4GeV/c using the data taken in 2005. The longitudinal spin transfer is found to be D_LL= -0.03\pm 0.13 (stat) \pm 0.04(syst)forinclusive for inclusive \Lambdaand and D_{LL} = -0.12 \pm 0.08(stat) \pm 0.03(syst)forinclusive for inclusive \bar{\Lambda}hyperonswith hyperons with = 0.5and and = 3.7 GeV/c$.     Drell-Yan forward-backward and spin asymmetries for arbitrary vector boson production at next-to-leading order

    Longitudinally polarized, unpolarized and forward-backward mass differential cross sections for Drell-Yan lepton-pair production by arbitrary vector bosons are calculated in next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD. Analytical results are presented in a form valid for all consistent nn-dimensional regularization schemes, with the mass factorization scheme kept general. NLO predictions for all Drell-Yan type processes (W±W^\pm, ZZ and γ\gamma^*) at BNL's relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) are made using polarized parton distributions which fit the recent deep-inelastic scattering data. These are examined as tools in the determination of the polarized parton distributions and the unpolarized uˉ/dˉ\bar{u}/\bar{d} ratio. NLO predictions for the forward-backward lepton asymmetry at Fermilab are made and the precision determination of sin2θW\sin^2 \theta_W from future runs is studied. In all the above, the QCD corrections are found to be significant.     The Kinetic Interpretation of the DGLAP Equation, its Kramers-Moyal Expansion and Positivity of Helicity Distributions

    According to a rederivation - due to Collins and Qiu - the DGLAP equation can be reinterpreted (in leading order) in a probabilistic way. This form of the equation has been used indirectly to prove the bound Δf(x,Q)<f(x,Q)|\Delta f(x,Q)| < f(x,Q) between polarized and unpolarized distributions, or positivity of the helicity distributions, for any QQ. We reanalize this issue by performing a detailed numerical study of the positivity bounds of the helicity distributions. To obtain the numerical solution we implement an x-space based algorithm for polarized and unpolarized distributions to next-to-leading order in αs\alpha_s, which we illustrate. We also elaborate on some of the formal properties of the Collins-Qiu form and comment on the underlying regularization, introduce a Kramers-Moyal expansion of the equation and briefly analize its Fokker-Planck approximation. These follow quite naturally once the master version is given.     MC-Simulation of the Transverse Double Spin Asymmetry for RHIC

    Using {\sc Sphinx tt}, a new MC simulation program for transverse polarized nucleon--nucleon scattering based on {\sc Pythia~5.6}, we calculate the transverse double spin asymmetry ATTA^{TT} in the Drell-Yan process. If one assumes (quite arbitrarily) that the transversity parton distribution δq(x,Q2)\delta q(x,Q^2) equals the helicity distribution Δq(x,Q2)\Delta q(x,Q^2) at some low Q02Q_0^2 scale, the resulting asymmetry is of order 1\%. In this case is ATTA^{TT} would hardly be be measurable with PHENIX at RHIC.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure

    Next-to-leading order QCD corrections to A_TT for prompt photon production

    We present a next-to-leading order QCD calculation of the cross section for isolated large-p_T prompt photon production in collisions of transversely polarized protons. We devise a simple method of dealing with the phase space integrals in dimensional regularization in the presence of the cos(2 phi) azimuthal-angular dependence occurring for transverse polarization. Our results allow to calculate the double-spin asymmetry A_TT for this process at next-to-leading order accuracy, which may be used at BNL-RHIC to measure the transversity parton distributions of the proton.Comment: 19 pages, LaTeX, 2 figures as eps file
