Nonsurgical Treatment Options for Basal Cell Carcinoma

    Get PDF
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) remains the most common form of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) in Caucasians, with perhaps as many as 2 million new cases expected to occur in the United States in 2010. Many treatment options, including surgical interventions and nonsurgical alternatives, have been utilized to treat BCC. In this paper, two non-surgical options, imiquimod therapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT), will be discussed. Both modalities have demonstrated acceptable disease control rates, cosmetically superior outcomes, and short-term cost-effectiveness. Further studies evaluating long-term cure rates and long-term cost effectiveness of imiquimod therapy and PDT are needed

Mangrove forests play an important role in mitigating the effects of global warming as mangroves can absorbs and stores carbon therefor, mangrove plants including A. marina can act as carbon sinks. The study aim is to estimate the carbon content contained in A. marina pneumatophore biomass. The data was taken b using line transect method. The number of research stations are 3 stations contain 3 plots (10 x 10 m2) for each station. Samples were taken at low tide by established 3 microplots (50 x 50 cm2) in each 10 x10 m2 plots. The results showed that the highest biomass value was found at Station 3 of 0.49 Kg/m2, followed by Station 1 of 0.42 Kg/m2, and the least pneumatophore biomass value was found at Station 2 of 0.41 Kg/m2.  This finding is in line to the potenntial potential carbon content in pneumatophores where Station 3 has C content (0.08 Kg C/m2), dand 0.07 Kg C/m2 for both station 1 and 2 respectively. The average of C Contain in pneumatphores was 0.28 Kg C/m2. Keyword : Carbon Content, Biomass, Pneumatophores, Avicennia marin

: Cough is a symptom of lung disease which is very important, but sometimes ignored. Cough more than 2 weeks need to be taken seriously because it is the main symptom of pulmonary tuberculosis, especially when the cough is accompanied by phlegm. To determine the diagnostic results of mycrobacterium tuberculosis in the sputum of patients with cough ≥ 2 weeks with Ziehl-Neelsen colouration in Puskesmas Paniki bawah, Tikala Baru, and Wonasa Manado. The study design used descriptive research by sampling method using total sampling during the period September 2015 - December 2015. patients with cough more than two weeks by checking the acid fast bacillus method in Paniki health center, we found 2 patients (11,76%) with positive result and 15 patients (88,24%) negative, whereas in Tikala found 1 patients (7,69%) positive and 12 patients negative, in addition in Wonasa we don\u27t find any positive patients. Percentage by sex with a cough for more than two weeks we found mostly male with 21 patients (52.5%) while women only 19 patients (47.5%). From the percentage of age with cough for more than two weeks mostly occurred in age 55-79 years old with percentage of 37.5%.Conclusion: Cough more than two weeks is a symptom of lung Tubekulosis and most often affects males than females in the age group 55-79 years

Merbarone, NSC 336628, is an investigational anticancer drug with activity against experimental animal tumors including melanoma. This paper presents results of a Phase II clinical study of merbarone in patients with biopsy proven stage IV malignant melanoma without prior chemotherapy and with no evidence of CNS involvement. Thirty-five patients with median age 58 (range 27–81), with performance status 0–2 were treated with merbarone 1000 mg/m 2 /day for five days by intravenous continuous infusion repeated every 3 weeks. All patients (21 males and 14 females) were evaluable for toxicity. Two patients were not evaluable for response having been removed from protocol treatment due to toxicity and received other treatment during the first course of chemotherapy. Among the evaluable patients there was one complete response in a supraclavicular lymph node lasting four months and one partial liver response lasting three months. The remaining thirty-one patients were non-reponders. Of these one had a stable disease lasting 21 months. The overall objective response rate was 6% (2/35) with a 95% confidence interval of 1%–19%. Twenty-six of the 35 patients have died. The estimated median survival of the entire group was 9 months with a 95% confidence interval of six to eleven months. Renal toxicity was dose-limiting and manifested as increasing serum creatinine (54% of patients), proteinuria (51%) and hematuria (9%). One patient experienced grade 4 creatinine increase, proteinuria and acute renal failure. Other toxicities included nausea (71%), vomiting (51%), malaise (23%), weakness (20%), alopecia (17%), diarrhea (17%), anorexia (14%), transaminase (SGOT, SGPT) increase (14%), constipation (14%), alkaline phosphatase or 5′nucleotidase increase (9%), and fever (9%). Hematologictoxicity (granulocytopenia, leukopenia, and anemia) was generally mild and infrequent (29%, only one patient had grade 4 granulocytopenia). Overall 9 patients (26%) had at least one grade 3 toxicity. We conclude that merbarone at this dose and schedule has detectable but minimal activity in the treatment of metastatic malignant melanoma and given the significant renal toxicity this schedule does not merit further evaluation in this disease.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/45186/1/10637_2004_Article_BF00872863.pd

Mangroves are forests that grow in brackish water and are affected by tides and seawater, and these forests grow specifically in places where there are pavement and accumulation of organic material. The purpose of this research is to identify the types of mangroves and determine the structure of the mangrove community in Lesah Village. This research was conducted from September to October 2019. The method used in this research is the quadrant line transect method. The types of mangroves were identified with identification books. Community structure data taken are density, frequency, dominance and important value index (IVI) and then analyzed with Microsoft Excel program. Based on the results of the research, there are 2 types of mangroves found in the research location, Rhizophora stylosa and Sonneratia alba. The highest density value (0.122 ind / m2), relative density (81.88%), frequency types (1), relative frequency (50%). Closure types (1.83 m2), types of relative closure (50.18%), the highest important value index at the research site was (182.12%). The results of the mangrove ecological index data analysis for the diversity index value (0.51), dominance (0.73). Keywords: Structure Community, Mangrove, Lesah Village. Cutaneous angiosarcoma of the scalp

BACKGROUND Angiosarcoma is a malignant tumor of vascular endothelial cells that arises in the head and neck. It is a rare, difficult to treat, and lethal tumor. METHODS Clinical data from patients who were diagnosed with angiosarcoma of the scalp between 1975 and 2002 at the University of Michigan were reviewed. Analysis was performed to assess for factors impacting time to recurrence and survival. RESULTS The study was comprised of 29 patients with a median age of 71.0 years. Most patients presented after a delay in diagnosis with either a bruise-like macule (48.3%) or a nonbruise-like nodule (51.7%). Seventy-five percent of patients had pathologic Stage T2 disease, and 76% of patients had high-grade tumors. Virtually all patients underwent surgical excision (96.6%); however, negative surgical margins were achieved in only 21.4% of patients. Multiple lesions on presentation were associated with a shorter time to recurrence ( P = 0.02). The median actuarial survival was 28.4 months. Younger patients and patients with Stage T1 disease had improved survival ( P = 0.024 and P = 0.013, respectively). Radiation therapy was associated significantly with a decreased chance of death (hazard ratio, 0.16; P = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS Although surgery remains the first option for the treatment of patients with angiosarcoma of the scalp, achieving negative margins often is impossible. Patients who are younger and who have less extensive disease fare better. Postoperative radiation therapy should be employed routinely, as it may lead to improved survival.
