Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the local density of topological surface states
We study Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillations in the local density of states
(LDOS) for topological insulator (TI) and conventional metal Au(111) surfaces
with spin-orbit interaction, which can be probed by spin-polarized scanning
tunneling microscopy. We show that the spacial AB oscillatory period in the
total LDOS is a flux quantum (weak localization) in
both systems. Remarkably, an analogous weak antilocalization with
periodic spacial AB oscillations in spin components of LDOS for TI surface is
observed, while it is absent in Au(111).Comment: 4 APL pages, 3 figure
Fundamentals of microcrack nucleation mechanics
A foundation for ultrasonic evaluation of microcrack nucleation mechanics is identified in order to establish a basis for correlations between plane strain fracture toughness and ultrasonic factors through the interaction of elastic waves with material microstructures. Since microcracking is the origin of (brittle) fracture, it is appropriate to consider the role of stress waves in the dynamics of microcracking. Therefore, the following topics are discussed: (1) microstress distributions with typical microstructural defects located in the stress field; (2) elastic wave scattering from various idealized defects; and (3) dynamic effective-properties of media with randomly distributed inhomogeneities
On the String Equation of the BKP Hierarchy
The Adler-Shiota-van Moerbeke formula is employed to derive the
-constraints for the -reduced BKP hierarchy constrained by the string
equation. We also provide the Grassmannian description of the string equation
in terms of the spectral parameter.Comment: 17 page
Dopamine dysregulation in a mouse model of paroxysmal nonkinesigenic dyskinesia.
Paroxysmal nonkinesigenic dyskinesia (PNKD) is an autosomal dominant episodic movement disorder. Patients have episodes that last 1 to 4 hours and are precipitated by alcohol, coffee, and stress. Previous research has shown that mutations in an uncharacterized gene on chromosome 2q33-q35 (which is termed PNKD) are responsible for PNKD. Here, we report the generation of antibodies specific for the PNKD protein and show that it is widely expressed in the mouse brain, exclusively in neurons. One PNKD isoform is a membrane-associated protein. Transgenic mice carrying mutations in the mouse Pnkd locus equivalent to those found in patients with PNKD recapitulated the human PNKD phenotype. Staining for c-fos demonstrated that administration of alcohol or caffeine induced neuronal activity in the basal ganglia in these mice. They also showed nigrostriatal neurotransmission deficits that were manifested by reduced extracellular dopamine levels in the striatum and a proportional increase of dopamine release in response to caffeine and ethanol treatment. These findings support the hypothesis that the PNKD protein functions to modulate striatal neuro-transmitter release in response to stress and other precipitating factors

Optimization study on the magnetic field of superconducting Halbach Array magnet
© 2017 Elsevier B.V. This paper presents the optimization on the strength and homogeneity of magnetic field from superconducting Halbach Array magnet. Conventional Halbach Array uses a special arrangement of permanent magnets which can generate homogeneous magnetic field. Superconducting Halbach Array utilizes High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) to construct an electromagnet to work below its critical temperature, which performs equivalently to the permanent magnet based Halbach Array. The simulations of superconducting Halbach Array were carried out using H-formulation based on B-dependent critical current density and bulk approximation, with the FEM platform COMSOL Multiphysics. The optimization focused on the coils’ location, as well as the geometry and numbers of coils on the premise of maintaining the total amount of superconductor. Results show Halbach Array configuration based superconducting magnet is able to generate the magnetic field with intensity over 1 Tesla and improved homogeneity using proper optimization methods. Mathematical relation of these optimization parameters with the intensity and homogeneity of magnetic field was developed
Cultural-based visual expression: Emotional analysis of human face via Peking Opera Painted Faces (POPF)
© 2015 The Author(s) Peking Opera as a branch of Chinese traditional cultures and arts has a very distinct colourful facial make-up for all actors in the stage performance. Such make-up is stylised in nonverbal symbolic semantics which all combined together to form the painted faces to describe and symbolise the background, the characteristic and the emotional status of specific roles. A study of Peking Opera Painted Faces (POPF) was taken as an example to see how information and meanings can be effectively expressed through the change of facial expressions based on the facial motion within natural and emotional aspects. The study found that POPF provides exaggerated features of facial motion through images, and the symbolic semantics of POPF provides a high-level expression of human facial information. The study has presented and proved a creative structure of information analysis and expression based on POPF to improve the understanding of human facial motion and emotion
Bridgeness: A Local Index on Edge Significance in Maintaining Global Connectivity
Edges in a network can be divided into two kinds according to their different
roles: some enhance the locality like the ones inside a cluster while others
contribute to the global connectivity like the ones connecting two clusters. A
recent study by Onnela et al uncovered the weak ties effects in mobile
communication. In this article, we provide complementary results on document
networks, that is, the edges connecting less similar nodes in content are more
significant in maintaining the global connectivity. We propose an index named
bridgeness to quantify the edge significance in maintaining connectivity, which
only depends on local information of network topology. We compare the
bridgeness with content similarity and some other structural indices according
to an edge percolation process. Experimental results on document networks show
that the bridgeness outperforms content similarity in characterizing the edge
significance. Furthermore, extensive numerical results on disparate networks
indicate that the bridgeness is also better than some well-known indices on
edge significance, including the Jaccard coefficient, degree product and
betweenness centrality.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl
