Rapid Tunneling and Percolation in the Landscape
Motivated by the possibility of a string landscape, we reexamine tunneling of
a scalar field across single/multiple barriers. Recent investigations have
suggested modifications to the usual picture of false vacuum decay that lead to
efficient and rapid tunneling in the landscape when certain conditions are met.
This can be due to stringy effects (e.g. tunneling via the DBI action), or by
effects arising due to the presence of multiple vacua (e.g. resonance
tunneling). In this paper we discuss both DBI tunneling and resonance
tunneling. We provide a QFT treatment of resonance tunneling using the
Schr\"odinger functional approach. We also show how DBI tunneling for
supercritical barriers can naturally lead to conditions suitable for resonance
tunneling. We argue using basic ideas from percolation theory that tunneling
can be rapid in a landscape where a typical vacuum has multiple decay channels
and discuss various cosmological implications. This rapidity vacuum decay can
happen even if there are no resonance/DBI tunneling enhancements, solely due to
the presence of a large number of decay channels. Finally, we consider various
ways of circumventing a recent no-go theorem for resonance tunneling in quantum
field theory.Comment: 47 pages, 16 figures. Acknowledgements adde
Linking healthcare associated norovirus outbreaks: a molecular epidemiologic method for investigating transmission.
BACKGROUND: Noroviruses are highly infectious pathogens that cause gastroenteritis in the community and in semi-closed institutions such as hospitals. During outbreaks, multiple units within a hospital are often affected, and a major question for control programs is: are the affected units part of the same outbreak or are they unrelated transmission events? In practice, investigators often assume a transmission link based on epidemiological observations, rather than a systematic approach to tracing transmission. Here, we present a combined molecular and statistical method for assessing:1) whether observed clusters provide evidence of local transmission and2) the probability that anecdotally|linked outbreaks truly shared a transmission event. METHODS: 76 healthcare associated outbreaks were observed in an active and prospective surveillance scheme of 15 hospitals in the county of Avon, England from April 2002 to March 2003. Viral RNA from 64 out of 76 specimens from distinct outbreaks was amplified by reverse transcription-PCR and was sequenced in the polymerase (ORF 1) and capsid (ORF 2) regions. The genetic diversity, at the nucleotide level, was analysed in relation to the epidemiological patterns. RESULTS: Two out of four genetic and epidemiological clusters of outbreaks were unlikely to have occurred by chance alone, thus suggesting local transmission. There was anecdotal epidemiological evidence of a transmission link among 5 outbreaks pairs. By combining this epidemiological observation with viral sequence data, the evidence of a link remained convincing in 3 of these pairs. These results are sensitive to prior beliefs of the strength of epidemiological evidence especially when the outbreak strains are common in the background population. CONCLUSION: The evidence suggests that transmission between hospitals units does occur. Using the proposed criteria, certain hypothesized transmission links between outbreaks were supported while others were refuted. The combined molecular/epidemiologic approach presented here could be applied to other viral populations and potentially to other pathogens for a more thorough view of transmission
Neonatal exposure to estradiol-17β modulates tumour necrosis factor alpha and cyclooxygenase-2 expression in brain and also in ovaries of adult female rats
The sexually dimorphic organization in perinatal rat brain is influenced by steroid hormones. Exposure to high levels of estrogen or endocrine-disrupting compounds during perinatal period may perturb this process, resulting in compromised reproductive physiology and behavior as observed in adult In our recent observation neonatal exposure of the female rats to estradiol-17β resulted in down-regulation of TNF-α, up-regulation of COX-2 and increase in SDN-POA size in pre-optic area in the adulthood. It is known that the control of reproductive performance in female involves a complex interplay of the hypothalamus, pituitary, and ovary. The present study was undertaken to understand the possible molecular mechanism involved in changes observed in the ovarian morphology and expression of selected genes in the ovary. Administration of estradiol-17β (100 μg) on day 2 and 3 after birth revealed up-regulation of ER-α, ER-β, COX-2 and down-regulation of TNF-α expression. Also the decrease in the ovarian weight, altered ovarian morphology and changes in the 2D protein profiles were also seen. This is apparently the first report documenting that neonatal estradiol exposure modulates TNF-α and COX-2 expression in the ovary as seen during adult stage. Our results permit us to suggest that cues originating from the modified brain structure due to neonatal exposure of estradiol-17β remodel the ovary at the molecular level in such a way that there is a disharmony in the reproductive function during adulthood and these changes are perennial and can lead to infertility and changes of reproductive behavior
Cosmological Landscape From Nothing: Some Like It Hot
We suggest a novel picture of the quantum Universe -- its creation is
described by the {\em density matrix} defined by the Euclidean path integral.
This yields an ensemble of universes -- a cosmological landscape -- in a mixed
state which is shown to be dynamically more preferable than the pure quantum
state of the Hartle-Hawking type. The latter is dynamically suppressed by the
infinitely large positive action of its instanton, generated by the conformal
anomaly of quantum fields within the cosmological bootstrap (the
self-consistent back reaction of hot matter). This bootstrap suggests a
solution to the problem of boundedness of the on-shell cosmological action and
eliminates the infrared catastrophe of small cosmological constant in Euclidean
quantum gravity. The cosmological landscape turns out to be limited to a
bounded range of the cosmological constant . The domain is ruled out by the
back reaction effect which we analyze by solving effective Euclidean equations
of motion. The upper cutoff is enforced by the quantum effects of vacuum energy
and the conformal anomaly mediated by a special ghost-avoidance renormalization
of the effective action. They establish a new quantum scale
which is determined by the coefficient of the topological Gauss-Bonnet term in
the conformal anomaly. This scale is realized as the upper bound -- the
limiting point of an infinite sequence of garland-type instantons which
constitute the full cosmological landscape. The dependence of the cosmological
constant range on particle phenomenology suggests a possible dynamical
selection mechanism for the landscape of string vacua.Comment: Final version, to appear in JCA
Is Brane Inflation Eternal?
In this paper, we show that eternal inflation of the random walk type is
generically absent in the brane inflationary scenario. Depending on how the
brane inflationary universe originated, eternal inflation of the false vacuum
type is still quite possible. Since the inflaton is the position of the
D3-brane relative to the anti-D3-brane inside the compactified bulk with finite
size, its value is bounded. In DBI inflation, the warped space also restricts
the amplitude of the scalar fluctuation. These upper bounds impose strong
constraints on the possibility of eternal inflation. We find that eternal
inflation due to the random walk of the inflaton field is absent in both the
KKLMMT slow roll scenario and the DBI scenario. A more careful analysis for the
slow-roll case is also presented using the Langevin equation, which gives very
similar results. We discuss possible ways to obtain eternal inflation of the
random walk type in brane inflation. In the multi-throat brane inflationary
scenario, the branes may be generated by quantum tunneling and roll out the
throat. Eternal inflation of the false vacuum type inevitably happens in this
scenario due to the tunneling process. Since these scenarios have different
cosmological predictions, more data from the cosmic microwave background
radiation will hopefully select the specific scenario our universe has gone
through.Comment: 32 pages; v2: references and comments adde
