Bell-state preparation for electron spins in a semiconductor double quantum dot
A robust scheme for state preparation and state trapping for the spins of two
electrons in a semiconductor double quantum dot is presented. The system is
modeled by two spins coupled to two independent bosonic reservoirs. Decoherence
effects due to this environment are minimized by application of optimized
control fields which make the target state to the ground state of the isolated
driven spin system. We show that stable spin entanglement with respect to pure
dephasing is possible. Specifically, we demonstrate state trapping in a
maximally entangled state (Bell state) in the presence of decoherence.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
Comparative study of methyl-CpG-binding domain proteins
BACKGROUND: Methylation at CpG dinucleotides in genomic DNA is a fundamental epigenetic mechanism of gene expression control in vertebrates. Proteins with a methyl-CpG-binding domain (MBD) can bind to single methylated CpGs and most of them are involved in transcription control. So far, five vertebrate MBD proteins have been described as MBD family members: MBD1, MBD2, MBD3, MBD4 and MECP2. RESULTS: We performed database searches for new proteins containing an MBD and identified six amino acid sequences which are different from the previously described ones. Here we present a comparison of their MBD sequences, additional protein motifs and the expression of the encoding genes. A calculated unrooted dendrogram indicates the existence of at least four different groups of MBDs within these proteins. Two of these polypeptides, KIAA1461 and KIAA1887, were only present as predicted amino acid sequences based on a partial human cDNA. We investigated their expression by Northern blot analysis and found transcripts of ~8 kb and ~5 kb respectively, in all eight normal tissues studied. CONCLUSIONS: Eleven polypeptides with a MBD could be identified in mouse and man. The analysis of protein domains suggests a role in transcriptional regulation for most of them. The knowledge of additional existing MBD proteins and their expression pattern is important in the context of Rett syndrome
Performance of the EUDET-type beam telescopes
Test beam measurements at the test beam facilities of DESY have been
conducted to characterise the performance of the EUDET-type beam telescopes
originally developed within the EUDET project. The beam telescopes are equipped
with six sensor planes using MIMOSA26 monolithic active pixel devices. A
programmable Trigger Logic Unit provides trigger logic and time stamp
information on particle passage. Both data acquisition framework and offline
reconstruction software packages are available. User devices are easily
integrable into the data acquisition framework via predefined interfaces.
The biased residual distribution is studied as a function of the beam energy,
plane spacing and sensor threshold. Its standard deviation at the two centre
pixel planes using all six planes for tracking in a 6\,GeV
electron/positron-beam is measured to be
(2.88\,\pm\,0.08)\,\upmu\meter.Iterative track fits using the formalism of
General Broken Lines are performed to estimate the intrinsic resolution of the
individual pixel planes. The mean intrinsic resolution over the six sensors
used is found to be (3.24\,\pm\,0.09)\,\upmu\meter.With a 5\,GeV
electron/positron beam, the track resolution halfway between the two inner
pixel planes using an equidistant plane spacing of 20\,mm is estimated to
(1.83\,\pm\,0.03)\,\upmu\meter assuming the measured intrinsic resolution.
Towards lower beam energies the track resolution deteriorates due to increasing
multiple scattering. Threshold studies show an optimal working point of the
MIMOSA26 sensors at a sensor threshold of between five and six times their RMS
noise. Measurements at different plane spacings are used to calibrate the
amount of multiple scattering in the material traversed and allow for
corrections to the predicted angular scattering for electron beams
From Teamchef Arminius to Hermann Junior: glocalised discourse about a national foundation myth
If for much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the ‘Battle of the Teutoburg Forest’, fought in 9 CE between Roman armies and Germanic tribes, was predominantly a reference point for nationalist and chauvinist discourses in Germany, the first decade of the twenty-first century has seen attempts to link public remembrance with local/regional identities on the one hand and international/intercultural contact on the other. In the run up to and during the ‘anniversary year’ of 2009, German media, sports institutions and various other official institutions articulating tourist, economic and political interests attempted to create a new ‘glocalised’ version of the public memory of the Teutoburg battle. Combining methods of Cognitive Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis, the paper analyses the narrative and argumentative topoi employed in this re-orientation of public memory, with a special emphasis on hybrid, post-national identity-construction.
The HERMES Back Drift Chambers
The tracking system of the HERMES spectrometer behind the bending magnet
consists of two pairs of large planar 6-plane drift chambers. The design and
performance of these chambers is described. This description comprises details
on the mechanical and electronical design, information about the gas mixture
used and its properties, results on alignment, calibration, resolution, and
efficiencies, and a discussion of the experience gained through the first three
years of operation.Comment: 21 pages, LaTex, 16 figures include
